We booked a room through Expedia as part of a trip to Longwood Gardens for their Winter Lights display. Since it was freezing outside, we planned to stop by the room first to change. About 30 minutes before our arrival, we got a voicemail saying a water pipe had burst, and they needed to cancel. Okay, no problem--we pivoted and went straight to Longwood Gardens. But before going in, we spent an hour in the parking lot searching for another B&B without any luck. We decided to enjoy the gardens anyway, and they didn't disappoint! If you've never been, you must visit in both spring and winter--it's incredible. Then, another voicemail came through saying the pipe issue was fixed, and the room was ready. I called back to confirm, but no one answered. It was now 10 p.m., so we headed to Elk Forge, unsure of what to expect. The room was... fine. Let's just say it could use a little TLC--paint peeling from the ceiling, for starters. When I turned on the faucet to wash up, there was no water. So much for that fixed pipe! Guess they just really wanted my money. The next morning, we went down for breakfast, hoping for a redeeming moment. Instead, we were met with something that felt like a knockoff Fairfield Inn breakfast: scrambled eggs, a waffle maker, juice, and some sad, expired-looking fruit. Looking back, I should've stayed at a Marriott. It would've been cheaper, had a bigger bed, better food, and--most importantly--running water. Lesson learned! read more

I think this place may have made some improvements since some of these reviews were written. Nobody there when we walked in, I had to call and Harry (I think that is his name) came up from the basement where he said he stays and gave us a key. We had the Philadelphia room which was the original master bedroom. It was comfortable and appeared clean. The shower was weird, couldn't get it off of a hard pulse kind of action. This place has a bit of a creep factor. They keep low soft music playing downstairs all night and there is a fountain dripping. My husband went down to see if there was a corkscrew available in the kitchen - it was late at night and no lights on in the kitchen but he said he heard someone in there making noises like they were about to prepare a meal. Note that we were the ONLY guests that night!! Needless to say he turned around and came back upstairs, not gonna disrupt whatever that was. Starting about 2 a.m. until about 4 a.m. there were unexplained thuds. Breakfast was very good, large amount of food choices served buffet style. read more

Overall: The BnB is nice. It's got character and charm. The rooms are big especially for the pricing and the staff seems very nice. There are some renovations going on and most things could use a fresh cost of paint all and all but my partner and I were able to have a very relaxing getaway here. Breakfast Food: It's from 7:30 am to 9:30 am and it's buffet style breakfast eating. There is usually fresh fruit, juices, cereal, Bread, bagles, muffins, a waffle maker with already made batter, and sometimes eggs and French toast. It was all good and satisfying for a breakfast. The Room: We had the Country Club Suite. The suite has a bedroom with a hottub and a small smart tv in it. There is a lounge room with desk, couch mini fridge and microwave. Last there is a bathroom with a standing shower, sink, hanging rack and toilet. The towels are nice towels and everything is well stocked overall. There is some wear and tear to the room for sure that should be addressed at some point. The bed could be squeaky at time or hit the wall making loud thumps. If there is someone staying above you, you can hear them moving around but no voices or any other sounds. The House: The parking isn't great as you can't tell we're to park on the property without seeing another car parked. The lighting outside isn't great and it was clear which door lead inside for picking up keys. However the property is pretty overall and I can imagine it looks amazing in Spring, Summer and Fall or on a snowy winter day. read more

We stayed there for a weekend in early November. If you're going to a bnb for the warm hospitality, you won't get it here. Contactless check in, no one greets you, you pick up your key from a plate on a table inside the door. The innkeeper, Harry (not sure about name), seems a little off. He seems to have some insecurities. If he wants to impress you at breakfast he'll tell you all about his academic achievements and his service in the National Guard. If you're not from Maryland, be careful what you say. A little of him goes a long way. If you stay there you'll see for yourself. Good location for exploring the area, but once was more than enough. Two nights in hot weather and we arrived to a room on the 3rd floor where the air conditioner was not up to the job. A window air conditioner and table fan helped with a meager overhead vent. No service, in two days we never saw the property manager. At breakfast there were no forks, one knife and no napkins. We requested them from the kitchen and they never came out with them. I don't mind old, but this was also quite dirty. I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone. read more

This place was ridiculous. What you see on the website IS NOT what you get. This was the one time I booked a place without searching reviews, so I guess I have no one to blame but myself. Did not see a single employee until I emailed them because there where dozens (I'm not exaggerating, dozens) of dead flies in the hall and some in our room and they came to clean them up. The room was dark and very very old. They say the place is luxury, I would get in the shower it was so small, old, rusted and dark. Everything looked like it was falling apart. Breakfast was grab and go with a few cooked items, similar to a holiday inn. Coffee was instant and not brewed. There are no rook temp controls.The only good thing-bed was comfortable. This is a charming little place for a short getaway. They have a small tea and gift shop as soon as you enter. There was a table with envelopes on it also as you entered. We found our name on the envelope and the name of the room we were staying in. The keys were inside. The room was quaint. Shower and Jacuzzi tub in the room. The bed was super comfy. Breakfast between 7:30a - 9:30a. Waffles, breads, granola and yogurt, fresh fruit, eggs, fresh juices and coffee. The atrium has tables to eat at and look over the grounds. Staff very nice. Christiana is about 19 miles away with a lot of restaurants and things to do. We really enjoyed ourselves. read more

Awesome get away spot! Charming house from the 1700s with antiques and gracious hosts. Delicious breakfast, comfy beds, just a great stay all around. We explored Newark, went on hikes and visited Longwood gardens. The owners try to be as green as possible, mom and pop owned (support local business!), next to trails and close to restaurants and a ton of other activities! Came here to unwind for a mini baby moon, overall the b&b is charming and has lots of art painted right onto the walls and it's beautiful. My husband and I stayed at the Longwood suite. It was so beautiful!! It was odd walking right the suite and was greeted by the jacuzzi tub, that location / set up of the rooms was a bit odd. The sunroom wasn't really a "sun" room but it was quite charming and relaxing. Again, the artwork is stunning. The electric fireplace is in this room worked really well and heated up fast! The bedroom fireplace didn't really work at all. The bed and linens were soft and comfy. The bathroom was also cute and cozy. I would recommend a small upgrade from shower curtain to a glass painted door for the shower. It was freezing taking a shower and the silly curtain kept getting in the way. That shower head is absolutely terrible though, it got my hair wet every time and water barely came out. That can also use an upgrade. The breakfast was buffet style. The homemade granola was the best. Loved the fresh fruit and juices served daily. They can use a bit more choices on the actual meals, the eggs were a bit undercooked, runny and watery but okay. The suite were were in was on the second floor and we could still here the couple below us talk. We were a hold flight of stairs up as well and we heard them talking from our bedroom.... Overall the stay was wonderful. The area; there's not a lot to do in the area. You need to drive about 40 minutes to an hour to get to someplace good. Christiana mall is about 15 mins away and a huge mall with more dining options. read more

Me and my fiance got a groupon deal to come here. When we arrived, there was nobody at front desk to help with check in. The keys to your room were left on table in an envelope. We stayed in the fairhill room and it was smaller than we expected but at least it came with a whirlpool in the room. We felt the bed was uncomfortable because it was definitely not a queen size bed more like a full size mattress on a queen size bed frame. The breakfast to this place was pretty nice. On the first day we had turkey bacon with some eggs. Yogurt with some granola and waffles by pour batter in the waffle maker yourself. Pretty cool and fresh waffles. On day two we had some omelette, fruits and waffles. The bed and breakfast have 2 nature trails which I think is poorly maintained and no signs marked saying it is a nature trail. We just saw a road so we just went and explore. Nothing much to see at this time, no flowers and trees didn't have leaves on it. But on one of the trail it did come across a river. On day of check out, there was nobody there to take the keys so we just followed instructions to leave the key on the desk read more

Had only one encounter with EF B & B and sadly it is memorable for all the wrong reasons. Purchased a Living Social Special Two Night Stay in 2013. Tried to use the voucher - unsuccessfully. There was lack of availability of suites during the timeframe we wished to use the voucher. Multiple attempts to resolve the issue with customer service and management were unsuccessful. Discovered the expired voucher today - as I was cleaning my office. Never used. Hope owners and management treat guests and potential guests more favorably now than back in 2013. read more

My wife and I stayed here for two nights in Valley Forge Suite (in the basement). First night, the room was freezing cold because of the AC and there's no thermostat in the room. Second night, it was HOT! I guess some people must have complained. The innkeeper must have adjusted the AC from one extreme to the other. It was raining on the second night and as a result it caused a lamp outside the building to make a loud buzzing sound (according to the innkeeper, this happens every time when it rains, seems to me they would try to fix this before a electrical fire!). We could hear the buzzing night all night long while we tried to sleep, I was still up at 3am because of the sound! The breakfast was nothing amazing, basically fruits, waffle, and quiche. The picture of the food, nature trail, and golf that some people have posted are misleading. The food pics are from a wedding, therefore it's not what you are going to get when you stay here. The "nature" trail is 1/5 of a mile, basically the backyard of the B&B and they made a few trails with a lawn mower. There's a small putting green as far as golf goes. (06/01/2013) We attended a wedding there, the place is set up nicely for a small to moderate sized wedding. The wedding basically rented out the entire place for the weekend. The arbor and small garden are a natural and idyllic setting; the Carriage House was a convenient set up and crash spot for the bridal party; the Sugar House for the reception was right there and the Inn for guests just down the drive. It's pretty much ideal if you want to have a compound just for you and your close friends and family for a special event. The Inn itself was quaint, kind of tacky, chock full of stuff, eclectic and interesting period pieces. The Carriage House was modern with a few antiques, central A/C a bonus in June. Staff was, while not exactly professional, friendly, kind of like staying at your cousin's house whom you've never met, but your moms said it was OK. We thought the atmosphere was friendly and accommodating. They do their own catering on-site for events. It's average, not bad, not spectacular, but the whole package (location, setting, amenities) might make it worthwhile for you. read more

Relax and travel back in time at this beautiful, elegant, Colonial manor house that's only a short drive from Philadelphia, Baltimore and Washington, D.C.! We stayed here at the recommendation of a friend who lives nearby. We arrived and found out there was a big wedding there the next day, and they upgraded us to the large Valley Forge suite. And gave us a personalized gift bag with candy, biscotti and other treats. The suite was breathtaking. The bedroom has Queen bed, full bath, decent closet and a large hot tub! A separate living room with a couch, desk, mini-fridge and microwave has folding doors to separate the rooms. Both rooms have large flat-screen TVs and working gas fireplaces. Flip the switch and you can take the chill off of those crisp winter nights. The air conditioning is just right. The sheets, blankets and pillows are wonderfully luxurious, and the bed is a delight for sleeping. The towels are wonderfully thick and absorbant. But it's the little extras that make all the difference. There is bottled water waiting in the room, The closet contains a wonderful logo bathrobe. The shower has shanpoo and conditioner dispensers built in. The free wifi is strong and fast, with routers placed to good advantage. Picking up the lobby phone connects you automatically to the cell phone of a staffer on duty. Just outside our suite is a patio with a table and chairs, and a small koi pond. The woods and creek provide excellent walking trails. Breakfast in the solarium (!) is homemade and lovely. Choices included fresh fruit and juices, coffee, egg and sausage casserole (gluten-free!), pastries or granola or even a Betty-type crumble. Yogurt is available as well. Considering that the Elk Forge Bed and Breakfast Inn is leas than an hour from Baltimore and two hours from Washington, DC, it seems like a world away. If you want to unplug, unwind and unstress, this is the place. We will be back soon! read more

What a wonderful little getaway! This place is adorable and the atmosphere is so cozy. Very rural and the property is beautiful. Very scenic and there's a really nice nature trail. I stayed here for a weekend with my boyfriend and our dog. Our suite was pet friendly and we had no problems at all bringing him along. Adam at the front desk was very friendly and made sure we felt at home and had everything we needed. We stayed in the country club suite which had a king bed, whirlpool and a living room; microwave and fridge, 2 TVs and an electric fireplace. Very cozy and very clean. We also made a reservation for the couples "togetherness" massage. Joy was our masseuse and she was wonderful, we left feeling amazing. Breakfast was delicious! Everything was fresh and tasted homemade. The waffles and quiche are a must. This is definitely a hidden gem and a must for a nice little getaway to unwind and relax from the city life. I normally do not leave reviews. i purchased this place for my wife's birthday the room was nothing as advertised the house looked haunted and the "large screen tv" was no more then a 32 inch. The electric fire place did not generate heat the whirlpool took several minutes to start also water came out tea colored for several first minutes the room was very cold. The 1 star is for the king size bed and the romance package because that was the only thing that made it a little decent the bed was very soft, we made the most of our stay but it was very creepy the top lock did not lock on the door to our room i paid $300 total for 1 night for a value in my opinion should of been about half the price read more

We went Nov 11-13 to celebrate 4 years. We had a wonderful time. Our room was clean and when we saw the staff they were kind. Breakfast was meh and the property needs a little upgrading though I think that's part of its charm. This place is a piece of work. And not in a good way. The rooms were beat up and worn. Looks like this place hasn't seen a drop of paint or an ounce of maintenance in 20 years. This place is circa 1990 all day long. The rooms are poorly painted mural style of crappy vineyards. There isn't anyone on staff to greet you as you arrive or to deal with issues as they come up. My wife and I went for a romantic get away and couldn't bring ourselves to stay. A different room was offered but was in a similar state of worn and unpleasant. A refund was politely given. The owner spoke of health concerns limiting his opportunity to work on the property. So many issues here. Yellow water, stained ceilings, and numerous other issues. read more

My fiance and I got the Living Social deal for Elk Forge. Although, we had a lovely weekend I attribute that to our ability to have fun regardless of circumstances and not to our surroundings. The best thing about this place is that the beds are like sleeping on clouds and the grounds it sits on are lovely. Other than that I'm afraid I can't give a glowing recommendation. First of all, I love B&Bs and I would not classify this as one. It's more of an Inn. The place is too big to be a B&B and it's lacking an important component, a fantastic homemade breakfast. The breakfast here was awful. I was so irked by it. They say it lasts from 8-10AM but truly if you don't come down early you can expect no food or ice cold eggs. All the "hot" dishes were freezing cold during our stay (disgusting and unsafe). The other options (of which there were few) included bagels, waffles, possibly a muffin or two, and fresh fruit. On our second day there, they had a full house -- I"m guessing every room was booked. And they were SORELY unprepared. They ran out of food within and hour and then again 30 mins later. The owners were frazzled and the other employees were running around doing pretty much nothing. In fact, it's hard to tell who works there period. All weekend there were different people "working" in various areas of the house. None wearing uniforms and none particularly able to answer questions or help in any way. When we arrived there was one guy working and he gave us zero information about the town or activities to do in the area. Luckily, we had already scheduled horseback riding which the Inn failed to tell us we could get at a discount if we mentioned we were staying there. (Note: there is really nothing to do in this area besides nature trails and horseback riding) The house looks like it used to be nice. Now it's just a jumble of random decor -largely outdated and shabby. They also have doves in the living area which is just repulsive. They had pooped and molted all over the floor of their cage and the surrounding area and they had a distinct smell. Overall, this place suffers from poor management. I am used to fabulous B&Bs where the owners/innkeepers are always present smiling and giving recommendations on fun things to do in the area. I'm also used to a fabulous breakfast. if you want that B&B experience skip this place and head to Country Hearth in PA or Mariaville in NY. Both are fabulous. Adding on to this review I have to mention the "spa." Basically you walk down a dingy staircase to a weird basement area. Yep. That's the "spa." It's two musty rooms with two massage tables each. I was so annoyed that this place (on it's website) touts this as a professional spa. It's strange and anything but professional. My fiance and I both got massages. The actual massage techs were good but the whole experience was just wrong. I felt weirded out to be getting a massage in a basement -- not zen like. Keep in mind they bill these spa services at professional rates so you'll pay a decent size bill for your sub par surroundings. read more

I, too, got the Living Social deal to come here. The property was beautiful. We drove up and it was exactly what I expected. We were assigned the Elkridge room on the third floor. We arrived at dusk, so we were still able to see lots of things. The man who checked us in was very nice and helpful. We arrived to the room and didn't see our wine and chocolates, so we called. They put them in our room while we were out for dinner. The room was tiny, and that was fine. I mean, what are you doing in your hotel room that it needs to be huge? The decor wasn't my cup of tea, but I got it. The bathroom doors are saloon style doors and not actually doors. Bathroom moments are private moments, but not with these doors. (-1 star) There was a hot tub in our room, which provided entertainment. Loved it! And it was super romantic with the wine and the lights and chocolate. Wonderful. We got up the next morning for breakfast. Really, you can skip breakfast. Its not all that great. Go to the Waffle House. Also, they have doves. Doves don't cry. They laugh. And it's the freakiest thing ever. Well, a lady was cleaning their cage during breakfast and the cage was wide open. So, of course, one decides to fly out. Scared the shit out of me. Personally, I don't think that was very sanitary to be cleaning a bird cage and having birds fly around the breakfast nook. In fact, I think its pretty disgusting. So removing a star for that alone. Overall, it was nice. I will never have a reason to go back to this town, as there is NOTHING there. But, I do recommend the Inn. Its quiet and romantic and provides a nice escape from city life. read more

I got a Living Social Escapes deal for a 2 night stay here. It was a very nice package and an excellent deal, a bottle of wine, a box of chocolates and a stay in a room with a whirlpool tub at the bed and breakfast. Cool! I called to make my reservation and the innkeeper had a very snappy sense of humor. I made our reservation for some weekdays before the Valentine's day blackout dates. The Inn is nicely decorated, very easy to find, clean and comfortable. They have board and card games, movies for you to watch on the TVs in your room and lots of neat little spaces to hang out and chill in the house. There's an enclosed deck, an outside deck, a little golfing range and lots of hiking trails (that were all totally snowed over when we were there, duh.). This was a great place to just hang out and spend a relaxing time. Our room was very cozy (The Wilmington) and I was really glad I'd looked at the pictures on the website for the rooms. The Wilmington is one of the few where the tub isn't under the eaves. Clearly someone on staff is an avid sample collector because the bathroom was filled with randome trial size items and sample items for guests. A neat touch! A framed article in one of the cozy spots mentions that it was the innkeepers' family home and they converted it when their boys all left for college. I was a bit offended when the innkeeper made fun of me for being a vegetarian. A mormon is going to make fun of someone else because she chooses not to consume something due to her beliefs? I think there's a bible verse about that. Plank eye much? There are tons of things to do on the grounds and lots of neato little things to do nearby. Tiny nearby Chesapeake City has some cool restaurants and charming shops but I think they're more of a summer place. It was deserted when we went there. I had no problem with my bed or the temperature of the rooms. Similarly the staff were all quite kind and helpful though the innkeeper's sense of humor tended towards the sharp and snappy sometimes. My only complaint is that the breakfast was the standard type of free hotel continental breakfast. You know, waffle maker, juice glasses, cereals, fruits. There was a lot of variety and it was all fresh, it's just, well, it's a bed and breakfast. Perhaps this was the weekday breakfast setup or perhaps this was a cheaper option they put out so as not to bankrupt themselves with an inn full of cheapass Living Social folks, I don't know. That and the innkeeper ticking me off with the whole vegetarian thing are the only reasons I gave it 4 instead of 5 stars. If I'd paid full price and gotten free hotel continental breakfast instead of B&B style breakfast I would have been really upset and given it 3 stars, maybe 2. I got a great deal for what I paid and it was a really nice time. If the same kind of deal came up in the future I'd take it in a heartbeat. If I knew there would be full breakfast I would seriously consider paying full price and coming back during the in-season to see the nearby town at capacity and to visit the local winery (closed October to May). read more

My list of basic criteria for rating any lodging is pretty simple: Is the room clean? Is the room comfortable? Is the bed comfortable? Generally, a Bed & Breakfast charging well over $100 a night can meet these expectations and the entire review would be focused on the quality of the numerous other amenities offered with the rented room. Unfortunately Elk Forge Bed and Breakfast Inn only passed one of the three basic tests, so there's no point in even discussing any other niceties. The good: The Inn and the room were both very clean. The failures: After 2 nights stay, my girlfriend and I are in dire need of trips to the chiropractor. I can't remember the last time I've slept on such a wildly uncomfortable bed. The stunningly low quality of the mattress would have been much more fitting for a teenager's dorm room or a $35 a night roach motel. This inadequacy alone would keep me from ever coming back. Unfortunately, there was another critical flaw: The room was freezing cold. The room's heater had a hard time keeping up with the cold weather and was positioned literally inches from the head of the bed. The result is that guests are forced to either sleep in the cold (using blankets as equally low quality as the mattress) or be dry-roasted like a peanut. We tried to sleep with the heat on, but couldn't manage the intense heat and dry air, so we chose to sleep with extra cloths on. At check-out, we weren't asked how our stay was. Breakfast ended too early for us to even consider trying it. The hostess didn't even know how to operate the computer. She had to take my name and number so that we could settle up later on, once she figured it out. If you're really really desperate for a room with a clean hot tub, the Elk Forge might be suitable for you, but if you want a decent night sleep or a comfortable room, than this is definitely the wrong place to go. edit: ps I came here specifically because of the Living Social deal. I think the deal dropped the price by about 40%. That said, the Living Social price was much more reasonable in relation to what the B&B offers. Were I to rate Elk Forge based on the discounted price, it'd probably be 3 stars. At least then you're getting about what you paid for. read more

I have to disagree with the first review on a few points: 1. I found my bed to be very comfortable. It was a select comfort sleep number bed so my girlfriend and I were both able to choose our own firmness level. 2. My room had a fireplace as well as forced air heating and we found the temperature very easy to modulate. That being said, the thermostat on the wall was set to 68 and had a sign saying "Do not change, this controls the heat to 3 rooms." Therefore I guess it's conceivable that if we left the door open to our room it would kick the heat on to all three rooms. Or, if we ran the fireplace on high it would prevent the forced air from turning on elsewhere. 3. The breakfast ended at 10am on weekends. A pretty standard time in the hotel business. We found the owners to be very nice and eager to please, the room was clean, the breakfast was good, there was wifi throughout the BnB, and the stay to be very relaxing. read more

My husband I stayed a few days here during February. There was a fair amount of snow on the ground so we didn't really get to explore outside or go on any of the trails, but the views were gorgeous! You could not have asked for a more hassle-free check-in! There were keys in an envelope at the front desk and we just helped ourselves and came in. I found that we had a lot of privacy, which we liked. We could easily find help if we needed it, but for the most part, we kind of felt like we were on a romatic get-away all by ourselves. We came and went as we pleased. There is a self service coffee and tea bar in the conservatory whch we loved. They provided a nice selection of loose leaf teas and infusers. We stayed in the Chesapeake room. I looked at all the rooms on the website before selcting it, and I think the pictures online were a good representation of what we found. We enjoyed the in-room jacuzzi. The bed was comfortable, the room was clean, and I was happy to find body wash, shampoo and conditioner in the shower since I had forgotten to pack my body wash. There was also a hair dryer in the room so if I go again, I know I can pack light. We enjoyed the breakfast. We also liked the selection of cookies they had set out in the afternoon. Although we didn't take advantage of it, there was a large selection of DVD's to choose from, as well as a basket full of microwave popcorn. The way everything seems to be set out for you to help yourself really makes you feel at home. Some people might prefer a bit more hands-on service, but we greatly enjoyed the laid-back atmosphere. We look forward to going again during the spring or summer when we can enjoy more of the surroundings. read more

This review is for October 2011. Ok, so I'm a procrastinator. But I just love this place. I got engaged here. It was perfect. My fiancé and I wanted to get away from the city (DC) for our 2 year anniversary and found a Groupon or LivingSocial voucher and came to this precious place. This place is adorable, family owned, fairly priced and utterly unique. I loved the room we stayed in; I forget its name, but it had George Washington/Revolutionary War murals on the walls and an AWESOME whirlpool/jacuzzi in the room. The bed was great (my partner is 6'6" tall with a cranky back, so he's difficult to please). The staff were ALL very kind and friendly, the breakfast was really quite good. They were VERY accommodating about my fiancé's severe food/nut allergies, which is a huge deal, because anaphylactic shock and/or death can put a quite a damper on a romantic weekend. You'd be surprised how many people don't take allergies seriously or are just plain ignorant or careless about something as simple as checking an ingredients list. Not so at Elk Forge. They were kind, courteous, and meticulous. That pretty much describes the staff in general, but they were also suitably laid-back for a country B&B. I never felt pressured to keep to a schedule; we raided the pantry at night and came up with a few snacks. I highly recommend this place. I would consider having my wedding here, but I live in San Diego now. Still, we plan to come back here sometime when we visit our families in D.C. P.S. While you're here, take a hike up to the lighthouse! That's where we got engaged and it was PERFECT! There were a lot of bad reviews about this place on TripAdvisor and I really don't understand why! The cons were the bad sour coffee, an okay breakfast, a whirlpool tub with one speed and railings that are a safety hazard. We stayed in the Long wood suite which had a whirlpool tub, balcony and living room. Like a reviewer on TripAdvisor said the living room was not cozy. Had a fireplace though! So did the bedroom. Fireplaces were turned off but hubby turned on the pilot light and we enjoyed the fire on a rainy night. We would come back again! read more

Really fun historical house but were very surprised to never have even seen the owners. We know that as an owner of the B&B it's not always possible to be there but there was very little personal touch from the moment we walked into the door to the moment we walked out. We were just passing through and it was very nice that they were able to accommodate us at the last minute which a lot of B&Bs don't but when you walked inside you were greeted by someone who clearly did not own the place. We were given a very brief introduction and left to explore on our own. We were hoping to ask some questions about the local area but really just did not feel the personal touch and were directed to a pile of brochures instead. Breakfast, even though it was buffet style, was pretty good. It had a pretty good variety especially for a B&B. Again there was no personal touch and no welcome or invitation to talk. The food was good it was just that I can get a buffet style breakfast for significantly less at a hotel. The house had a fun historical component that I really would like to have heard more about from someone. The decorations left something to be desired and, ultimately the ambience would probably be best described as aging. I know how hard it is to keep up an old house but if you are highlighting it as a bed-and-breakfast it just needed a little TLC. read more

Livingsocial.com had a deal for Elk Forge and though close, my husband and I decided to go here for a getaway weekend. We stayed in the Philadelphia room with its king size bed (roomy and comfy), an electric fireplace and whirlpool tub. It was a big room! We had issues with the back light through the closed white blinds in the 6 foot tall window. It was directly across from the bed and very bright in the nighttime. They need room darkening something on the window or get brown blinds or pull down shades. I also scalded the top of my foot as the tub water was way too hot. The breakfast food was good; we had quiche two days in a row. We also had fresh fruit and you could make waffles. The loose tea was nice and different. We didn't walk around the property, but it looked lovely. All in all, a nice stay. Having a comfy bed is a big thing. And wifi was nice too. Stayed March 2012 read more

Our stay was wonderful. The environment of the house was so calm and warm and welcoming. The room was clean and so beautifully decorated. The breakfast served was delicious. This was our first time at a B&B but I know that this has started a new favorite for us. We will certainly be returning to Elk Forge again and have already recommended it to friends. Unresponsive. You can't get anyone on the phone when you call during business hours. They won't return messages or emails. Wanted to book a spa weekend, and when I FINALLY got someone on the phone, no spa appointments were available a month out. I ended up cancelling reservation prior to the 10-day cancellation window and after being told on the phone that only the $15 cancellation fee would be charged, they never refunded my full room payment. Will be contacting Better Business Bureau. There are enough hotels/B&Bs out there. Save yourself the headache and skip this one. read more

Just returned from a weekend stay. The house is a beautifully restored home. Lovely rooms. We thought it was a little odd that no one was there to check us in, just left a key in an envelope on a table. We never saw a single person until breakfast the first morning. Breakfast was just ok, very underwhelming. Would have been nice to see the owners around the property greeting guests. read more

Overall the experience was 4 stars. At checkin there was a warm welcome. Charming and peaceful. The Baltimore room is lovely, it only has a shower but lovely small bathroom. Bed comfortable with the best sheets. Room clean and inviting. The movie collection is pretty good. They had the wolverine from Marvel Comics made this comic fan very happy. Just make sure to order you beer or wine or champagne very early like at booking or when you able to talk to a human face to face. Cut off is 7pm. At 630pm when came down stairs to the front table desk and picked up the phone that is supposed to connect with somebody..... nobody answered went straight to voicemail. I called from my phone it went straight to voice mail left messages. Tried again 645 then till 7pm. No response. You are not permitted to bring alcohol so make sure to plan ahead. Breakfast was good with fresh fruit and berries. If you love teas they have it all. This was a great retreat. The grounds are beautiful and the trail to the Big Elk creek is WOW amazing! read more
