We used to eat at the place when it was Taj buffet, which expired during covid. Today we were at a nearby protest and decided to try the South India buffet. There was some familiar food, some new. We mentioned the tandoori bin was empty and a steward notified us after replenishment. The dal tadka (?) Was absolutely terrific. That's my litmus test for that cuisine. We ordered the tikka chicken, saffron rice and butter naan. Only the chicken was edible but just. Everything else we had to throw out. We think the rice was old and tasted like the plastic bowl it was delivered in. Otherwise no taste at all and it was gummy. The naan didn't seem fresh either and was way too chewy. The green sauce that came with it was sour and had an "off" taste. The tikka chicken had an abundance of lemon or acv or something at the bottom that was also bitter and sour. We found this place on our web research and have been there a couple of times. They have the best lunch buffet. Lots of varieties. I have yet to try their regular menu- for which we will go back when we can. Their service is good. Staff are courteous.. They acknowledge you as soon as you walk in. Not a huge place but well managed. This place is at the heart of the town and you may have to drive around a few blocks to find parking. Since we went there on a Sunday on both the occasions, we had no issue finding parking. Be sure to go for a walk around the town while there. It's a vibrant neighborhood with so many local businesses. We didn't notice any big brand businesses which was pretty amazing. Totally a 5 star experience. read more

We stopped for an afternoon brunch (about an hour before they stopped serving the buffet) and were absolutely blown away by the variety of tastes and options at the buffet table. I had a plate consisting of about 1/2 vegetarian and 1/2 meat dishes (with 3 different types of chicken.) The taste of each dish was superior to any of the other Indian buffets at which I have eaten in the SF Bay Area. In addition, the cutlery was first rate, as were the tablecloths, napkins, and glasses. There was a full carafe of water already on the table, and I requested some ice to put in our glasses, which the waiter brought to us quickly. We loved the dessert choices this day: a variation on the rice pudding usually available at buffets in other restaurants which was delicious and sweet and then a rose-flavored drink which was absolutely delicious. The wait staff was very friendly and happy to help with any request. I will definitely return here when I am able! read more

Taste: less creamy and heavy than other Indian restaurants in San Rafael. Butter chicken tasted like a sweet tomato soup - very watery. I guess it would be easier on my stomach. Service: doesn't exist. The servers seemed not engaged. Atmosphere: the carpet, wall papers and many of the decor from Taj of Marin days must go. So dark and gloomy. It wasn't horrible. I am a lover of Indian food and have delighted in, and been disappointed by, a great many times in many places - Shillong, London, NYC, San Francisco and in Marin County; my home. I saw the Yelp 4.9 rating and had to explore. This business used to be Taj of Marin and had, at best, a mediocre lunch buffet. Taj has been renamed Suvai. I decided to try to the lunch buffet as that is what the majority of the reviews are for. The ambience is clean, warm and inviting. The crystal like chandeliers are a bit of a disconnect but that is neither here nor there. When I arrived, straight up noon, I was the only diner. The staff was very friendly and helpful and, to be honest, probably a bit thankful for the business. The buffet was again very clean, well presented and a good selection albeit the choices were not as balanced as I would expect. No mint or Tamarind chutney, a limited selection of chutneys in general. There were many meat dishes - butter chicken, curried goat, tandoori chicken - and a good selection of vegetarian options. Plain rice (not traditional with peas, etc..), fried rice (more akin to Chinese) and a biryani rice. There were fried egg rolls (Indian egg rolls?? Again more Chinese). The main dishes did not have broad flavor or color options. The tandoori chicken was more BBQ than tandoori. The curried goat was more stew than curry. The traditional Indian salad was very limited and not looking all that fresh. I absolutely love Masala Chai and their Chai left me disappointed. I will say the garlic naan was excellent. At a bit over $20 I don't feel it was worth it. My favorite in San Rafael, and not once disappointing, is still New Delhi - amazing bold flavors, very traditional, good balance and excellent service. Wonderful food and outstanding service! Tried their buffet on Sunday. It's not your average Indian buffet. It has a large selection of dishes, and they bring freshly baked naan to your table! They also have a dosa station. I particularly like that they offer many southern Indian dishes, including spicy eggplant, which was outstanding. My wife and I visited San Rafael last week and found out that Taj of Marin restaurant has recently been sold and taken over by a new 'South Indian" cuisine specialists - SUVAI, TASTE OF INDIA (Specializing in authentic Dosas, Idli and more). They are continuing with the Veg/Non-Veg Lunch Buffet. We are glad that at our request, this restaurant is now active on Yelp. We ordered Spinach Dosa (with Paneer) and Tocos Dosa. These dishes were absolutely superb! Restaurant is fully renovated. We enjoyed the friendly and caring attention provided by the staff. Finally, it is great to be able to have authentic South Indian food in Marin County. We will be back soon. read more

Restaurants was opened just in December. Customer service is good. The person who took our order was very friendly. Their lemon soda and neer moor was fresh and really good. Dosa was awesome. We ordered plain and butter dosa both of which was very good. Their spice level is low and so you can easily order spicy if you like spicy food. I am South Indian and was overjoyed to find out that a South Indian restaurant had opened up! OMg the food is delcious and authentic but I did tell them that I'm South Indian and I wanted authentic food!The multi layered bread Perata, its spelled differently on the menu, is a bread I grew up eating for breakfast with curry! It was flakey and oh so good.It is a cross between a tortilla and a croissaunt.(sorry I don't have spell check.We had the mutton Peretal, the curry itself was layered with flavours but the meat unfortunately tough and stringy.We also had the chicken Chetinad curry,A must have! What was a disappointment was there was no South Indian desserts.I would have died for a payasam! Jackfruit payasam or vermicelli!! Hopefully this restaurant will start serving that!!Oh the egg Perata recipee needs to be revamped. too much egg and the egg is on the outside that it takes away form the crips exterior and the buttery layers of the Perata itself.The egg should be on the inside of the dough before cooking and with chopped onions and chillies.Just my 2 cents. read more
