This place has AMAZING vegan options. I live in Los Angeles but go up to Marin often and EVERY time make it a point to grab at least one dinner here. The staff have consistently been very knowledgable and thorough and attentive to ensuring our order is made vegan, and knows the alternative options to offer for our meals. They have excellent sauces to use for the food. Me and my sweetheart each found our absolute favorites that no place else even comes close to matching. (Nachos de maria and the quinua curry!) I fully recommend this place if you are vegan/vegetarian, and even if you aren't! The vibes are nice and relaxed, i love that they don't play background music loud enough to interfere with the conversations us quiet talkers have. I don't know what more i could say that wouldn't get into rambling territory so i will stop here, but please know my positive feelings about this place still feel like i am understating a bit. I just wish there was more Chicken for the amount you're charged to add it ($4.25). There wasn't a huge amount of avocado or onion either. I know next time to order extra. But the quality of the food is amazing. & some people may not enjoy the notes, but this made me really happy to see the note on the bag. It was a great touch. The staff were so friendly too. I've passed by many times and have seen their eye catching Smart car all around town, but haven't eaten at Cafe Del Soul until recently. Everyone at the office is a fan and orders lunch all the time. My boss introduced me to his favorite wrap: the Sunrise wrap with tofu. I'm hooked! Besides tofu it's filled with brown rice, cheese, avocado, chopped tomato with a spicy chipotle seasoning. It's packed with flavor and fills you right up. Besides wraps they offer salads and nachos. Get the Nachos Maria!! It is a salad and nachos put together: a layer of chips and melted cheese with salad on the top. I like to add chicken to my order. On every to go order you'll find on the box or paper bag a warm handwritten message with hearts included. What a nice touch. To be honest I had no interest in trying their food since I thought they only served gluten free, vegan, and vegetarian food. Unfortunately, I ordered online for pickup and when I arrived to get my food not only did they give me someone else's orders when I looked at the receipt attached to the bag it had been sitting there for 3 hours! Was completely uneatable even if I had wanted to try something I didn't order. I realize I should have double checked my stuff before using walked out but it was my first time and I was going with the flow! Luckily my friend gave me half of hers so I could at least try the places food she so highly recommended, and they did give me my money back after a complicated conversation with 2 people that weren't quite understanding. Salad was good and I generally like their food but the value is not there for me. They charge an additional $4.25 for chicken and when I got it was shocked how little they gave. My second time here and you can tell that it's a pretty popular spot due to the deliciousness of their food.. Everything smells so fresh when you walk in and they have so many options to choose from it's worth coming back again and again. I ordered the southwest chicken salad with free range chicken it came with avocado and chipotle dressing. The salad was yummy it was fresh and light and it felt like it was truly made with love. I also got to taste their gluten free west African soup and will definitely be back to order it next time. They have been voted the best vegetarian and best sustainable restaurant in Marin for 3 years in a row for a reason. A bit pricey for the amount of food they offer but that's expected from organic/whole food restaurants in Marin. Cafe Del Soul made me think of a couple of things I'd not thought of in years: First, the steady flow of students from nearby Marin Academy made me recollect how unsophisticated the teenage palate is. During his high school years my younger son regularly ordered in from Sol Food displaying both his inherited foodie pedigree as well as evidence that I was gifting him far too much in lunch money. But the majority of teenage palates? Unsophisticated. Second, the food here reminded me of my first vegetarian cookbook, a gift from my father back in the late '70s. Vegetarian fare has evolved so far from those days but the food here seems stuck in that era. Though hormone-free, free-range chicken can be added to any dish (for $3.25) the menu is otherwise meatless and of the beans-cheese-brown rice-quinoa school. A Sunshine Salad ($8) was supposedly bathed in a citrus-cumin vinaigrette but I tasted neither. In fact, it was so lightly dressed that I questioned whether it was dressed at all. Even the sparsely applied dressing wouldn't be a problem though, if the salad were chock-full of deliciousness. This one was the opposite: sliced avocado, onion, and a smattering of grated cheddar cheese didn't make this a bang-up salad. All dishes here begin as vegetarian and can be enhanced with the chicken, organic tofu ($1), and/or organic spinach and almonds ($3). Though it'll cost you, I think it might be the only way to add some depth of flavor. That, or order one of the dishes with "chipotle" in the title; a quick scan of Yelp reviews reveals that people seem to like those dishes. The uber-casual Cafe Del Sol isn't breaking any new culinary ground and may in fact be taking a giant step back to the '70s. Though it appears good enough for the high schoolers I can't help but wish they'd take a page from Oahu's Beet Box Cafe and serve up some truly inspired and delicious vegetarian fare. read more
