I contracted with Alvita to care for my mother during the last two months of her life after she was injured in a fall. I paid for 24 hour home care seven days a week. Other than Fabienne, I found the caregivers sorely lacking in the most basic of qualities such as companionship and emotional support. Also, other than Fabienne, the one on one care for which they were hired (toileting, hygiene assistance, dressing, grooming, feeding, etc) was mostly delegated by them to the staff at the assisted living facility where my mother resided, which negated the whole point of hiring them in the first place. Chronic lateness was also the norm. Most arrived 10-20 minutes late for the start of the night shift The night shift crew was especially problematic. In addition to generally not performing the basic tasks for which they were hired ("it's not my job" was the common refrain, even though it literally was their job), they often did not even stay in the same room as my mother who was a fall risk. Some slept on the sofa in the living room during the night shift, some spent the night shift doing schoolwork in a separate room, and some spent hours of the night shift on their phone in the hallway outside of the apartment. The complaints became so numerous from the staff at the assisted living facility and from the hospice nurses that I eventually had to change agencies for the night shift. Three of the low points during the Alvita night shift require special mention. (1) There was the night that my mother sat in her own feces for the entirety of the night. When Hospice arrived in the morning, the waste was dry and hard and had been there all night, despite a 12 hour Alvita shift. (2) Many nights, my mother was put to bed at 7 PM for convenience sake without any social interaction or kindness on the part of the aide. (3) My mother suffered a skin tear on her arm the night after I complained about the aides sleeping on the job. I was told that she injured herself, but there are no witnesses other than the Alvita aide involved. On the opposite end of the spectrum is Fabienne. She was the primary Alvita daytime aide for my mother. Fabienne went above and beyond the call of duty. She exuded kindness and compassion. She took the utmost care of my mother and treated her with dignity and respect. When Fabienne was on the job, the staff at the assisted living facility and the hospice staff took a break because everyone knew that she had everything under control. This is the level of care advertised by Alvita and the level of care that I paid for, but only Fabienne met the mark. Not only did she meet expectations, but she blew everyone away with her level of care.

This is the 1st rehabilitation center that has welcomed us in like family and treated our love one as family. When I say the staff, as a whole, goes above and beyond every single day, I mean it. The staff here makes you feel welcome, offers you food, drinks, support, etc. They accommodate you with anything you need (i.e. the NY post newspaper, clothing, candy, etc. They are so responsive to the family either on site/in person, through email, and/or over the phone. I cannot say enough about this facility and the angels that work there.

But for the last three months his physical health deteriorated substantially and became very depressed and forgetful. In the last month he had hospice care and a 24 hour aid provided by others that were able to provide the appropriate care without having to move him into another room let along another facility. I won't bother comment in any detail about the facility's amenities - the food, the activities, the cleanliness of the facility. They were fine and more than adequate I am sure there are other, more expensive facilities that could provide a higher degree of amenities and more creature comforts. But what was critical to our family, who never thought either of our parents would ever live anywhere but in their own home or with one of their children, was the care and attention paid to their emotional and physical needs. Our father was a warm, funny and caring person. For him to be comfortable he needed to be surrounded by people who what type of person he was and treat him with the care and affection deserved of such a lovable person. Brandywine and the other providers they brought in, were that and more. They truly bonded with him and made sure he was cared for. If food or his meds needed to be prepared in a certain way they went out of their way to accommodate. If he was cranky and depressed as his condition worsened they were patient and sensitive. I could give plenty of examples of the large and little things they did to make our family content that under his most difficult days he was being properly cared for. When the time finally arrived and our father passed away many of the aides, nurses and other staff treated him and us like family. In an occupation where failing health and ultimately death is not an uncommon occurrence they seemed truly touched and concerned by his worsening condition and grieved with us when he passed away. They even attended his services and stayed with us well past the "respectful' time we thought others in similar line of work would spend. My family will never forget the loving care and respect they showed my father and his family. When you see that type of treatment by paid professionals who only got to know him during his final months you can't help but feel lucky that we picked the perfect place for him. The…read moredoctors, the nurses, the aides, the physical therapists were all really, really great at their jobs, kind and helpful, exactly what you would hope for. The social workers on staff (or whom I refer to as the Harbingers of Death) are a whole different story. Some words I would use to describe the social workers I dealt with: Demeaning, condescending, argumentative, difficult, compassionless, insensitive, unfeeling, cruel and empathy-deficient. My experience with the social workers was pretty awful. My final conversation with them about my mother deteriorated into a yelling match with the social worker ending the conversation by hanging up on me. Of the multiple phone calls and voicemail messages my family collectively left the lead social worker... I do not believe she returned a single one. Finally on the day of my mothers discharge, my mother said we were supposed to have an exit meeting with the social worker to go over care plans. We waited and waited... Finally we went looking for her. When we asked her about the exit meeting... With a big plastic smile on her face she said there was no need for one and goodbye. So we took my mother home. I really hope that my experience with the social workers at Bartley was the exception and not the norm and that the patients and their families are getting the information they need to get through their difficult time. I also hope I never have to deal with those Bartley social workers again.

Okay. I thought I did my update and realized I did not…read more I was here for 2 weeks, to recover from emergency abdominal surgery. Since it was January 2021, still height of Covid-19, the staff here, really stuck to guidelines. I was in a room that was kept clean, sanitized and comfortable. I had 3 different therapy/rehabilitation coaches and Becca was hands down fantastic. She kept me positive and on the right track for recovery. My diet was limited, due to my surgery, so I really couldn't eat normal foods, but the dietitian designed a perfect meal plan for me, which helped. I did have 2 bad migraines hit me, I do suffer from them, but these were really difficult to plow through. Staff here, knew I was suffering and helped me through them. Obviously, I was not allowed visitors, but my son was able to drop off clothes and personal items for me, and them come by my window, so I could see him. He was the only person of my family I could see in anyway, for the months time, that I was away from home, during all this, because my hubby, MIL & FIL all came down with Covid-19, and Mini-Me was taking care of them. I can't say enough good things about Bartley, I would most definitely choose them again, should I need rehabilitation care again.

They were a No Show/No Call! The Executive Director wanted to change the doctors order because she couldn't fill the staffing. We had to fight for everything we needed to care for our loved one and supplies came days later (some too late). Involvement with this agency caused trauma to the family, on top of our loved one dying. The Executive Director was condescending and runs a very disorganized hospice care agency. STAY AWAY!!!!

And the disrespect for the family wishes were absolutely unbelievable. There is definitely Medicare fraud going on here. Their report and my uncle's medical records did not match the Medicare bills and they employ nurses who take over for God and tried to kill my uncle. They were nasty and condescending to the family. And the people at the top have no idea what they are doing or what is going on. Please stay clear of this hospice!! There are definitely better ones in the area.

Dirty, worn, not clean, old, and more. Once you open the hallway door from the common areas there's a bad stench like sewerage/poop/pee. If that's not bad enough the rooms are cramped and you can't even open the closet with a wheelchair & chair blocking it. Dinner was ham & cheese (1piece each on white bread) and the ham was an ungodly color... not edible. I looked in horror that I moved my mom here. My mom asked the aide for lotion and she said "I'll get your nurse". Of course, she's on break. When the aide came in she laid mom down and pulled her up to the top of the bed but so fast she bumped her head into the headboard. Horrible service and I can't wait to move her out. I'm horrified and don't recommend.
