Our father, Ted Nardolillo, recently passed away after living at Brandywine at the Gables for…read morealmost one year. For most of that time he was physically and mentally competent. But for the last three months his physical health deteriorated substantially and became very depressed and forgetful. In the last month he had hospice care and a 24 hour aid provided by others that were able to provide the appropriate care without having to move him into another room let along another facility. I won't bother comment in any detail about the facility's amenities - the food, the activities, the cleanliness of the facility. They were fine and more than adequate I am sure there are other, more expensive facilities that could provide a higher degree of amenities and more creature comforts. But what was critical to our family, who never thought either of our parents would ever live anywhere but in their own home or with one of their children, was the care and attention paid to their emotional and physical needs. Our father was a warm, funny and caring person. For him to be comfortable he needed to be surrounded by people who what type of person he was and treat him with the care and affection deserved of such a lovable person. Brandywine and the other providers they brought in, were that and more. They truly bonded with him and made sure he was cared for. If food or his meds needed to be prepared in a certain way they went out of their way to accommodate. If he was cranky and depressed as his condition worsened they were patient and sensitive. I could give plenty of examples of the large and little things they did to make our family content that under his most difficult days he was being properly cared for. When the time finally arrived and our father passed away many of the aides, nurses and other staff treated him and us like family. In an occupation where failing health and ultimately death is not an uncommon occurrence they seemed truly touched and concerned by his worsening condition and grieved with us when he passed away. They even attended his services and stayed with us well past the "respectful' time we thought others in similar line of work would spend. My family will never forget the loving care and respect they showed my father and his family. When you see that type of treatment by paid professionals who only got to know him during his final months you can't help but feel lucky that we picked the perfect place for him. Five stars does not do justice for what these people did for our father. Mark and Wayne, two very grateful sons

The entire staff was just amazing - so caring and kind and made my father feel like they knew him for years. Maria Carnevale, Director of Admissions, was especially wonderful and went out of her way to work with us no matter what obstacles came up. She treated us like family and made the place truly feel like home. Many of the staff have been there for 10, 15, 20 years or more and that speaks volumes. I cannot say enough about this place and especially Maria for making it all possible. Bless you all for everything you do!

Dirty, worn, not clean, old, and more. Once you open the hallway door from the common areas there's a bad stench like sewerage/poop/pee. If that's not bad enough the rooms are cramped and you can't even open the closet with a wheelchair & chair blocking it. Dinner was ham & cheese (1piece each on white bread) and the ham was an ungodly color... not edible. I looked in horror that I moved my mom here. My mom asked the aide for lotion and she said "I'll get your nurse". Of course, she's on break. When the aide came in she laid mom down and pulled her up to the top of the bed but so fast she bumped her head into the headboard. Horrible service and I can't wait to move her out. I'm horrified and don't recommend.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank and let everyone know the exceptional work that the…read moreRehab Department does here. 2 1/2 months ago I had my left leg amputated just below the knee. I was originally told that I should expect a time schedule of 6 to 10 months before I could expect my Prosthetic leg with a lengthy time learning to walk on it. I have been very fortunate to have one of the best Rehab teams anywhere. In the last 2 1/2 months I have gone from relying on my wheelchair to walking on my prosthetic leg with a walker to now learning to use a cane. The Rehab Department is made of a group of individuals all working as a team with their patients healing the number one goal. Lead by a wonderfully kind caring woman Megha the Department Head each person brings a unique array of talents to the table to ensure a complete understanding of the patient's needs and how to best accomplish the necessary goals needed to help them improve. Jeff, Joel, Neha, Lisa, Loukik and Carrie are one great team. They all work together without egos getting in the way. Each has a special talent to motivate and inspire their patients to move forward on a daily basis. These talented people are all responsible for my quick and amazing recovery. They took me from post-surgical doubts about ever walking again to walking right now with a walker and now learning to walk with a cane. They never once let me quit and their positive feedback made me try even harder. My progress is in large part to their dedication to their belief in their patients' abilities and their skills as rehab specialists. You will be very hard-pressed to find a more dedicated team or better group of people to help you go through Rehabilitation for any problem.

The…read moredoctors, the nurses, the aides, the physical therapists were all really, really great at their jobs, kind and helpful, exactly what you would hope for. The social workers on staff (or whom I refer to as the Harbingers of Death) are a whole different story. Some words I would use to describe the social workers I dealt with: Demeaning, condescending, argumentative, difficult, compassionless, insensitive, unfeeling, cruel and empathy-deficient. My experience with the social workers was pretty awful. My final conversation with them about my mother deteriorated into a yelling match with the social worker ending the conversation by hanging up on me. Of the multiple phone calls and voicemail messages my family collectively left the lead social worker... I do not believe she returned a single one. Finally on the day of my mothers discharge, my mother said we were supposed to have an exit meeting with the social worker to go over care plans. We waited and waited... Finally we went looking for her. When we asked her about the exit meeting... With a big plastic smile on her face she said there was no need for one and goodbye. So we took my mother home. I really hope that my experience with the social workers at Bartley was the exception and not the norm and that the patients and their families are getting the information they need to get through their difficult time. I also hope I never have to deal with those Bartley social workers again.

We trusted them to…read morehelp us care for my mom, who is dying from stage 4 metastatic lung cancer that has spread to her brain. I trusted her care team and shared personal information about myself and my mother with them. In the midst of her decline, an aide thought she might need to go to the ER. This was later communicated to me but not to other members of her care team. The timeline of what happened after the ER suggestion does not make much sense. Also, no one told me that when a hospice patient is sent to the ER, their hospice care is rescinded. When she arrived at the ER, both the doctor and the nurse were confused as to why she was there. They explained that if the ultimate goal is hospice care -- which it was and still is -- then she should not be admitted, especially given her condition. However, they had no reason to admit her. Long story short, her hospice care was rescinded because they sent her to the ER, and then they refused to readmit her. I am beyond upset and deeply let down. Now, we have to find a new placement for her and a new care team. I would never have allowed her to be sent to the ER if I had known it meant hospice care would be terminated. Part of the reason this happened is due to a terrible lack of communication among the patient care team. There is little to no clear communication between the nurse, social worker, and aides. Make sure you document EVERYTHING and ensure that everyone on the patient's team is fully informed about what is happening. It's a shame that it becomes your responsibility to make sure the team communicates -- especially when you are dealing with a loved one who is dying. I strongly urge others to document everything. This company is disorganized, and members of the same care team often find things out after the fact -- or are unaware that something even happened. This company needs to take accountability for the lack of communication with my family and others, and they must make changes. I hope this post helps future patients and families, and I sincerely hope no one else is ever put in the position we are currently in.
