Not much to see here. In fact there's not much at all --- there are gas station mini marts with a better variety of goods. I saw beer, wine other cold drinks and snacks, but it looked like just the basics. The wine selection is especially weak, and the interior is pretty bare bones. Swan Mart has been here for a long time, possibly even when I was in high school. However, I consider that ancient history, so I'm going to consider it just "a long time." That covers a lot of bases. You will receive very friendly greetings and service here. In this day and age, that means a lot to me. I usually stop to get a cold drink when I work in the neighborhood, and there's a super-convenient bus stop just out on the sidewalk. They carry most everything you would find in a convenience store at the usual higher prices. Parking is a bit difficult. The parking lot is shared between vendors and customers, so if you're a pedestrian like me, pay attention. Entering from Barbur Blvd. is damn near impossible, so skip that because it's at a very busy intersection. It's best to enter off Hamilton at the side and you will make your life easier. The Lair Hill neighborhood really loves this family-run market so much so that when the property owner wasn't going to renew their lease in favor of allowing 7-11 to build there, the neighborhood association pitched a fit in 2001, and Swan Mart got to stay. That's a vote of confidence in my book. read more

After my Darling Husband and myself had Business near this Swan Mart in Southwest Portland... we stopped in to find something for my Husband to eat before our TriMet Bus arrived. There were Muffins, and my Husband chose one for his Snack. We really like the Swan Mart. We were greeted when we walked inside the front door. We were offered a bag. I was thinking about purchasing a Lottery Scratch-It here, but... we were in a bit of a hurry. Also, did you know... the prices on the Bottled Sparkling Waters were within our Budget. After this,.... we decided to take our Prius to our next Business Appointment in this neighborhood. And, there weren't any creepy older white guys standing outside the Swan Mart when we were there. read more

I limit my purchases here to $5 pints of Ben & Jerry's during emergency ice cream shortages and snow storms. These prices are actually cheaper than Zupan's! People seem to recommend the wine selection, which in my experience is actually not so vast or inexpensive. You're better off buying a bottle from the Ross Island cafe, unless you urgently need some wine with your ice cream. They seem also do a brisk business in cigarette sales, because this is Portland. The staff are friendly. After dark the neighborhood can be a bit dicey, and the loiterers can be menacing (a little bit of a taste of downtown in South Portland). But in the daylight hours, Swan Mart is a fine neighborhood option for ever so slightly overpriced sundries. read more

Lair Hill is a great location to live, yet the area is definitely missing that friendly Portland neighborhood feel - due in part to a lack of local shops and restaurants located nearby. As far as neighborhood convenience stores go, this place can be pretty standard. However, the family that owns it is so darn friendly it keeps me coming back. Walking in it is not uncommon to be greeted a minimum of three times. When I first moved into the area and would make my frequent visits for late night beer or wine runs, I imagined they were silently judging me and my purchases. Now I realize they are just interested in getting to know their customers and probably the nicest people on Barbur Blvd. you will ever encounter. The beer and wine selection is pretty extensive for a small store; although the prices are slightly higher than your average 7-11 or Plaid Pantry. A few more reasons I continue to stop at Swan Mart instead of another corner market: 1. I got a free corkscrew after they noticed I tend to purchase a lot of wine. And not some cheap plastic corkscrew either - this was decent quality. 2. While cooking late one Friday night I ran up to the mart for an onion as I didn't feel like getting in the car to drive to a grocery store. I walked home with two free onions in my backpack. 3. If I am all dressed up for work or a night on the town, I get a friendly compliment on how nice I look. What other place can you get frivolous freebies and enhanced self-esteem? I love Swan Mart! The beer and wine section is great. They have everything you could need at a local convenience store. The toiletries and canned food are here if you need them. They gave me a bag when they saw my hands were full with my little one. Excellent staff. The prices are higher than a chain grocery store, but that is something you should expect at a nice local shop. read more

The first time I ever walked into swan mart, I received a greeting that instantly trumped every other corner store, hands down. I walk in (most likely with a hangover) and am greeted by a smiling, waving face of a young Korean man saying "HI!, HELLO!!" I looked back at him and as all the Chicagoan in me thought "wtf is this guy so happy about, I mean really - I walked into a bodega, no BFD!" However, that smile and greeting was infectious. Though there is about a dollar upcharge on damn near everything, I have been a loyal swan mart-ee since. You can't beat having a down day and having such a reliable source of happiness and plentiful cigarette, beer, do-rags and random essentials. Its been over a year now that I keep coming back. And since, the wonderful man who worked there has finished school and gone back to Korea. But everytime I come in, I always ask the owners, his aunt and uncle, how he is doing. Despite the fact that they never remember me and I get the strange sense they are creeped out that I ask about their nephew. But like Tony Montana, "das okay". I will still be a happy patron because they have the warmest welcome in one of the least expected places. read more

The woman employee is okay, typically nice, however the older man who rung me out today was not pleasant at all and gave me a not-so-great experience. Totally unacceptable way to treat a customer. Bit expensive. Also, forgot to grab something off the counter, he never let me know as I left the store. Will not be returning. read more

Swan Mart? More like ol' super-expensive-but-reliable! You're going to pay for convenience at this place, but it couldn't be more convenient if you need some emergency Ben & Jerry's or if you needed to make a left turn on Barbur northbound. Cashier at Swan Mart does not want to follow any Covid mandatory state restrictions. Wasn't wearing a mask, place was filthy. No 6 ft apart. On top of that we come here pretty often, the cashier told us to 'get the fuck out' because we asked he not touch our personal stuff while being rung up. He was making lots of gestures that were very inappropriate. I was really trying to support a local spot that might be struggling during these times, but went to 76 with money instead. I will never be going to this connivence store ever again. Awful cleanliness, awful management, awful customer service. Place needs to be shut down and replaced. read more

Prices are higher here than other stores close by, $5 minimum for debt cards- even when I spent $4.98 employee told me I had to spend $5. Very rude staff. read more

I really love this neighbourhood market. It's convenient, the people are so nice, and they have a nice selection of 'emergency' items like ice cream or pain reliever. :) Without these guys, I'd be forced to suffer without or drive to the burbs, ewww. read more

The owners of this place are literally some of the nicest people you will ever have the pleasure of meeting. They greet every patron that comes in, and thank you when you purchase anything. If you have a question or need directions, they will do their best to help you. Also, they always have cold drinks, and good candy. When I lived in Portland, walking to Swan Mart on a lazy Summer afternoon was always a great pick-me-up. read more

During the snow storms of 2014, the owner of Swan Mart let my mom walk our elderly dog through the store instead of making him wait outside in the freezing cold weather. He is one of the most friendly corner store owners I have ever encountered. Upon every visit to this store, I am reminded why I keep going back. My roommates and I go to Swan Mart every day to get our morning snack, or evening beer. The owners, are as everyone has mentioned, some of the friendliest people in Portland. A very convenient store indeed if you live in the area. read more
