While…read moremaking pre-arrangements to have my ashes interred with his, I discovered that Akins had ashes interred at Great Lakes Cemetery under my husband's identity in 2018--MORE THAN 27 YEARS LATER. He refused my requests for records/information. Although there are obvious violations here Michigan Dept. of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA) could find none, leaving me to seek redress through expensive legal fees. I recently learned his is among only 9 funeral hames to face state suspension for pre-paid funeral contract violations. My rating would be "0," but that was not an option. PEOPLE BEWARE!!!!

Firstly, for the viewing of the body the room they selected for us carpet was extremely filthy. There were no chairs for the guests. When we mentioned the chairs they told us, it was better to socialize with no chairs. Then we had to ask again for them. The viewing was from 4-8 literally at 8:00 they said " the viewing for the ----- family is over" How rude. We are grieving. Its not like we were lingering. The guests were gone. It was just my family. He could have been nicer. To top everything off they lost my family members earring!! He always wore that earring and didn't look the same without it. That broke our hearts. Fortunately, the next day they did find it and brought it to the funeral. We were grateful for that but all in all the experience could have just been A LOT better. I wish we would have picked somewhere else.

They were kind loving and respectful beyond words, qualities that are so appreciated and in need at a time when families are most vulnerable. Their genuine kindness and compassion was felt by all of us and I had to take the time to make it known! God bless them!

As hard as it may seem to believe to some people, there are some cemeteries that are sub-par…read more Worse than that, they are just downright disgusting. Luckily, for a select few of my family members that have passed, the Mt. Olivet Cemetery is NOT one of those places. Admittedly, I hadn't been back to this location in probably 8 years. I don't have many family members buried there, and those who are buried there are members I was not as close to (either because they passed when I was young or before I was born, or because we were not close family members). Either way, I never remembered much about going out to this location. Maybe it's because I'm older now, or maybe it's because my older family members are starting their (hopefully) slow decent from the prime of their lives, but this is the first time I've ever truly paid attention to how this cemetery looks. Now, I was only there for about 45 minutes, but I think it was long enough to truly take in the location. First off, the grass was green and well kept, and the crypts were not dusty or dirty. Again, you may think that goes without saying, but unfortunately that is not always the case. The pavement, at least the roads I traveled, were free from potholes and graffiti as well. Lots of people I spoke with assumed that it would be a very bad cemetery due to the location in Detroit, but I did not find this to be the case. If you don't mind the hike, depending, of course, where you live in proximity to the cemetery, I think it's about as good as you can get in the Metro-Detroit area to have your final resting place - but let's hope that, for all of you reading this, that date is far away in the future.
