I went to Swedish ER tonight after nearly cutting off the end of my third finger. Everyone was super efficient, calm, kind, professional and knowledgeable. After a quick X-ray and a saline rinse they wrapped my finger up, fitted me with a sporty finger splint and sent mw on my way. Five stars. Will definitely visit again when I slice upon my hnd in the kitchen. read more

This was the worst hospital experience ever. After a dirtbike crash that fracture my tibia & fibula, and cracked a few ribs that I busted last summer, my pain was the worst I've ever experienced. It hurts to breathe, it hurts to move, it hurts to not move. They asked what my pain level was, I replied at least a 9 out of 10. They gave me tylenol & lidocaine patches that weren't even applied to the affected area. I was left sitting on the edge of the bed with my broken leg just hanging down for hours. No offer from anyone to get help to lay down. Over the course of 5 hours, I was checked on twice. It was about 80° in my room, and I mentioned this to a nurse. "Oh yeah, it is really hot in here." She looked at the thermostat and left. The x-ray techs were pushy, rude, and shoved me around causing so much pain I nearly passed out. After 3 hours or more, I was finally given some actual pain medication, but had to request it while wincing in pain. I would strongly suggest going to any other emergency room if at all possible. One other thing, when my door was cracked open for a short period, I heard many conversations between patients and staff that should have taken place in private. I now know "Maria's" full history of bowel movements, or lack thereof. I know all about "Carl's" recent stroke and shoulder injury. Incredibly unprofessional. read more

I had the opportunity of going to Swedish. I'm just going to say poor care. I've never seen such incompetence, and non-caring doctor actually he was a Physician Assisstant. All I can say is report these doctors and nurses. Absolutely terrible experience in the ER. We were sent here directly from Urgent care for a procedure. The doctor just ran some blood tests and said he didn't feel like doing that and kicked us out. We had to go to Overlake ER in Bellevue to get the procedure done. Dr. Richard Kwun had absolutely no bedside manner, he was very arrogant and just wrote us off. He did not even examine or touch my wife, just passed us off to a nurse for a blood test. He was very rude and claimed that her health issues are not his problems. Had to go to the emergency room for an extreme gastric flare up; intense gas pain and pressure that had weaned up and down for hours to the point where chest hurt, pain radiated to my back, it felt hard to breathe. Once I get into a room it was so intense, I was asked what brought me in and was instantly cut off with "you need to be more specific". I felt like I had a strict time limit to explain my symptoms and that there was no opportunity to go into my history, not that they seemed to care. I also was very much anticipating being asked about my diet, when my last bowel movement was, etc, but I wasn't asked which surprised me... Everything felt so rushed and procedural and like nobody cared, at one point it felt like my symptoms were "less than" because I wasn't puking my guts up essentially. The doctor was nice, but again felt very "scratching the surface" and like he had more important things to tend to. During his shpeal he monologues ruling out the gall bladder being involved. I've had 3 family members who had the gall bladder removed. I don't know if that means anything for me, but again it was like stated super fast and I never had the chance to even inform them of this. The doctor explained to me he'd be prescribing medication for me to pick up but that he would also give me something now to "get my pain level down so I could hopefully go home". Nurse comes in later I get my meds, 15 minutes later I get my discharge paperwork and I'm basically shooed out the door. Well I was under the impression, my pain was supposed to come down before leaving. I sat for another 20 minutes going back and forth on if I should just leave or say something because that's how "done with" I felt and like I was an inconvenience. I tried hitting what I assume is the call button attached to the bed(NOBODY SHOWED ME), and turns out it didn't work because EVS came in and then had to alert someone I was still in the room so I explained what meds I was given about 45 minutes prior and how my pain was honestly getting worse. My assigned nurse eventually pops her head in to say "I'm gonna grab this med, but just so you know, you really need to hit the call button in this case because every one thought you left". She left to grab the medication and I literally did not stop crying until we got home that night. She didn't even fully enter the room to ask me any questions, like no concern whatsoever that my pain/discomfort has not gone down and then she comes back in with an opiate pain medication and just reminds me to "pick up my meds in the morning". I just felt ashamed and gross, like they're under the impression now that I was after something stronger all along and that my symptoms weren't real. Its days later now(scheduled an appointment with a specialist because I'm still suffering) but I still feel so burned from this experience. read more

I came in on a Sunday night around 10pm due to stomach pain I've never experienced before. Front desk staff were welcoming and nice. After about 5 minutes I was assigned to a room where I met my Doctor Brian, and my nurse Kyle. Both of them were extremely pleasant and reassuring. This made my high stress situation 1000x better. I am from California so I'm used to crazy packed emergency rooms, 3 hour+ wait times, and so-so customer service from the staff. My experience here at Swedish First Hill has definitely set the tone for how a well run emergency room/staff should be. All the staff members who helped me where extremely attentive. My nurse Kyle was great, he seemed around my age so it was really easy to talk with him. He took my blood sample in one shot!!!! I was extremely impressed because every time I get blood work done they always tell me how small my veins are and end up poking me multiple times. Turns out my stomach issues were VERY MINOR. I felt so embarrassed for rushing to the emergency room for something so insignificant. When I told Doctor Brian how I felt so bad for coming in he didn't belittle me. He said it was a valid reason for coming in and things happen. A couple minutes later i received my discharge paperwork with instructions. Kyle answered a few of my questions and he even saw me out! No one really enjoys coming to the hospital but my time here definitely wasn't bad! I've had time to reflect before I post and decided to post my original... As I sit here in pain waiting to be discharged I decided to write this review to warn others about my treatment (or lack there of). Initially I was on an ortho unit, very nice room and attentive staff. Once I moved to another building on the 9th floor I found it to be less organized and absolutely no sympathy from the staff for those in pain. One of the attending physician said to me "that's all can do I don't know what to tell you " I felt so defeated. So now I'm leaving feeling even worse than I when I arrived!! Some of the worst medical care I've ever received from doctors. The nurses were very nice and competent. I'd easily be giving five stars if I was rating on nurses alone. We waited for about four hours to have my husband seen by a doctor. He had a very serious condition and hadn't received any calories for over 72 hours. He was visibility ill and it was very clear that he needed to be admitted. The room we were in was split with a fabric screen and there was a man on the other side of the screen who had injected drugs incorrectly and developed a fistula in his arm. We listened to multiple doctors plead with him for several hours to let them admit him. A doctor eventually came to talk to us and couldn't have been more disinterested in helping us. Before I was even able to talk, she announced that there was no reason to admit my husband. We went directly to Virginia Mason where he was admitted and stayed for over a week. The doctors at Virginia Mason said Swedish is known for really terrible medical care. Swedish doctors are the most incompetent I've ever come across. If you need any assistance from a GI doctor, you should absolutely go somewhere else. Gross negligence is a complete understatement. read more

If I could give this Swedish hospital in Issaquah a zero rating I would. My husband had knee replacement recently. Developed hematoma and was in extreme, excruciating pain. He was twisting and writhing in pain in the waiting room over an hour and literally crying. Kept telling us someone will come out and no one came out. I could see through the door that nurses were laughing and carrying on conversations like they just met up for coffee chat. No sense of urgency or human empathy. Treated like a number. Finally took him in after an he and half of waiting. Still waiting in the ER room. It has been over three hours now and he is still in extreme pain. They gave him pain med and left. Not sure when a doctor will see him at this point. Never coming back to this miserable place they call ER. read more

I had to bring my brother to the emergency room a couple of days ago. I was amazed at the care he received. Outstanding! it turned out my brother did not have a stroke as I suspected. The medical staff was so professional. They were respectful even though my brother gave them a run for their money. Test were ordered, they drilled down and found what the underlying problems were. The Doctor, Thomas P Boyer sat across the table from us and discussed solutions and what to expect in the future. I left feeling grateful for the clear advice we received and felt like I understood the choices I could help my brother make. Swedish hospital, I have no words for my gratitude! I had a surgery here April 2015. Throughout my stay the staff were friendly and accommodating, always alert to my needs as a patient. The truly stunning thing about my story, is that after all was said and done, I had a $35,000 bill, uninsured. After writing the hospital to ask for financial assistance, they only asked that I pay a tenth of the total bill. Amazing! I would have died paying off that huge bill. On my Obgyn team at First hill including Dr. Fuller and Dr. Patani. Suffice it to say for now that the OB team here is vicious and judgemental without an ounce of compassion for new mothers, newborns and their families. I don't care about how many positive reviews they have received; I have encountered the most heinous treatment from them while in their care. I would never recommend them to others. I was in a great deal of pain from my cesarean section surgery and the pain management was not efficient in the postpartum ward. I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes and I was labeled "pre-diabetic". I was eventually labeled a "non-compliant" diabetic as well as "failure to bond" with my infant who was whisked off to the NICU half an hour after he was born due to low blood sugar (an angry nurse by the name of Leah told me it was 100% my fault that my Newborn was born with low blood sugar and not doing well within the first week of being in the world; I fully accept this blame as I have said I am new to this disease and still learning about how to treat it. However I did not feel her comment was helpful). The spinal epidural the anesthesiologist provided me did not work?!!! And I had to be administered another spinal. The horror of not being fully numb whilst undergoing a major abdominal surgery, coupled with the fact that not one RN nor the surgeon placed my newborn onto my chest for skin to skin contact when he was pulled out of me speaks volumes about the lack of accountability this entire team has shown me. My insurance was mentioned several times by the nursing staff in postpartum and scoffed at; I was disrespected and discriminated against due to my "Lesser insurance carrier." A vase of flowers my friends brought to my postpartum room was actually stolen by a staff member (blatant and utter disrespect). The glass vase itself was quite beautiful and detailed which is probably why it was simply taken out of my room when I was incredibly groggy from The after effects of surgery and in no condition to notice the theft. Absolutely horrendous experience...Because my son was in the Nicu and I was in severe Pain during my 3 day tenure at First Hill, I was only able to visit my son in the NICU twice (two days out of the 3) and would bleed so heavily after each attempt to go further than my room). The drugs I was given were not administered through an IV drip like my first cesarean back in 2013 and the narcotics had absolutely no effect in managing the pain I was in. Yes my OBGYN team contacted CHILD PROTECTIVE SERVICES to visit my home a day before my newborn was discharged. My mind spins with the thought of how close I came to the possibility of losing not only my newborn but my 5 year old as well to social services if I had encountered an unscrupulous social worker. The social worker that did visit me saw that I had a very good home and safe environment for Baby and I was able to take my newborn home. However we have been unable to fully rest from the ordeal of birth and surgery as other mothers and newborns because of the constant contact and monitoring of child protective services. I've had to shell out over 5k to pay for a juvenile dependency attorney to handle my case. This experience is horrific and I would've rather given birth ANYWHERE other than Swedish first hill. DO NOT ENTRUST YOUR NEWBORN AND YOURSELF TO THE STAFF AT THIS HOSPITAL. (I truly feel that it is warranted to call CPS if an expectant mother was doing something that endangered the life growing inside her such as doing illegal drugs but for having gestational diabetes?!!!). Hospitals like Swedish first hill take full advantage of their authority in calling CPS on a whim and must exercise more responsibility than they currently do. Their lack of liability renders them lax in exercising more forethought and compassion and future patients should be warned. read more

Horrible all the way around. I wouldn't send my dogs there. Spent 4 nights here with experiencing ranging from exceptional to horrid. Some staff need to back to school/ training or leave the industry all together. Receptionist was beyond rude for no apparent reason. Waited almost 2 hours for a life threatening condition despite being told I was "next" several times as people with smaller ailments rushed in. Fights in the lobby and constant "code greys". I will say there was only 1 or 2 nurses / doctors who seemed to care and that's the only reason I would give 1 star. I hope to never visit here again. read more

I had the lovely experience of meeting Dr. Thomasser. I was instantaneously judged. She aptly called herself "Dr Common Sense" and went on to scold me about not taking appropriate measures to make myself feel better. No one wants to spend their time or money frivolously but there's a reason people come to the ER. She so rudely said to me, " but you're here. You came to the emergency room and now we have to do a work up on you." Who says that to someone? Pain is a very real thing AND it's also subjective. I reiterate- I did not want to waste resources but I felt as if this may be something I need to get checked out. When did interacting with a doctor become such a sterile experience? I was so embarrassed and I felt as if she was a being a "mean girl." Work on your bedside manner!!! Maybe she was having a bad day, but SUCK IT UP! She is a doctor and made a pledge when she became one to help everyone. Act like you want to help!!!! And on another note, I have never heard so many times I was receiving a non-narcotic concoction. The nurse giving me the IV tried to be slick, but checked my arm for what I am assuming were evident needle marks are something. I do not even look like I do drugs!! I rarely ever drink alcohol! Not everyone in Seattle is strung out on drugs. I will never use Swedish again. They don't care about their patients if you're a lower triage. read more

I went there because I am in a lot of pain! The guy started out by saying that he knew me. Then he proceeded to do nothing to relieve my pain! My very positive experience with the Swedish Hospital Emergency Room actually started out at another hospital that misdiagnosed me. I went there (Overlake Hospital, in Bellevue) about four hours after the onset of severe, periodic stomach contractions, or muscle spasms, and about 10 bouts of vomiting. They did an ultrasound, bloodwork, couldn't find anything wrong, got my severe pain stabilized and sent me home with a diagnosis of "abdominal pain, no cause found". They told me to eat food with the pain meds and drink plenty of fluids to keep hydrated--exactly the wrong medical advice. I had an immediate recurrence of symptoms, called the ER back, they told me that there was nothing they could do, I would have to "work through" the pain and let the situation "resolve itself". THAT'S when I decided I needed the best medical advice available in the Puget Sound area and asked my husband to drive me to the Swedish Hospital Emergency Room on First Hill in downtown Seattle. They admitted me, took a history, examined me, gave me pain meds and did a CT scan which immediately found the problem: I had a bowel blockage. Bowel blockages are very painful, that's the reason for all the yelling I did when my stomach contractions came on. My body was trying to eject the food in my system by the only route available--my mouth. That's also the reason for all the vomiting that I did, over and over again. I was admitted to Swedish Hospital where I was given strict instructions to take nothing by mouth, hydrated with IV fluids and advised to walk. If a patient follows these instructions, 90% of the time their intestines will unkink by themselves. In about 10% of cases, surgery is required. If you need surgery and don't get it, your kinked intestines can suffer from lack of blood supply and start to die (gangrene). You can get a bowel infection, peritonitis, you can die. I followed the doctors' instructions to the letter. I walked and walked and walked the hospital corridors around my room and the second day I was there, my intestines unkinked themselves and I went home, pain-free and happy. All the doctors and nurses at Swedish were super. They discovered the real cause of my problem immediately. Everyone was nice, everyone was careful, the nurses were super-friendly and responsive. I could not have asked for better care. Swedish Medical Center is the best. If you have an emergency, my advice is, RUN don't WALK, past Overlake Hospital and go straight to the nearest Swedish ER. read more

I will never ever use Swedish Hospital ever again, thanks to the inconsiderate and apathetic staff in the First Hill Emergency Center. A relative of mine came in with severe pain in a part of the body that had just been operated on within the last two weeks, and they kept us waiting for at least an hour. Some random guy with an abscess flaring up got higher priority than we did. Instead of admitting their mistake, when the patient finally got upset, the RN Andy responded by yelling and tossing the words back at the patient in a very disrespectful tone, and I don't normally complain or say these things lightly. They kept insisting they would see us as soon as possible, but they admitted a guy with a mild abscess WHO CAME IN AFTER US before they admitted the older woman with abnormal sharp pain in a recently operated area of the body. So, they weren't in fact seeing us as soon as possible, and instead tried to defend their pride. The security guard with a white mustache was also a piece of work not deserving of his job, as he immediately sided with the raging RN Andy and threatened to call his "boss." (There was a cop there who was very kind, granted. One of the nurses, a woman, was actually kind.) Worst experience in a clinical setting. If you can't handle the stress or the environment, the job isn't right for you. Avoid this Emergency center. read more

Hello! And good day to all who are even reading this.. Most are not here to read reviews about hospitals, but they should! Because Swedish Medical Centers ER department is probably one of the worst experiences I've encountered as someone with a severe chronic illness. I've had to deal with nurses and doctors alike with bad attitudes, who seemed as though they didn't care that the person they were "treating" was in pain. I was seen by Dr. Borack (excuse spelling), she was very rude, short, and judgmental. I was more so embarrassed by this particular treatment due to the fact that my girlfriend had to witness what I go through being a young "black" man in the United States. It was very belittling to say the very least. I'm sure there are more people out there who have been mistreated by this hospital and I call on them to speak up. This "not for profit" hospital has proved time and time again that it has no intention of being a place of healing. I know many nurses and staff members there that feel the same way concerning the fact that Swedish as an employer isn't the best. There are some good nurses there as well as doctors, but this is time I refuse to let this for, of neglect and abuse of power roll off my shoulders. As doctors they swore an oath to help people, not only that there are laws in place by the state of Washington that tell us as soon as we walk into the room of a hospital that it is the LAW for them to stabilize you and treat you or transfer you to another facility even if you can not pay or do not have insurance! Don't let these people get away with doing whatever they want to people because they don't like the patient they have never even met before in their lives, know nothing about, etc. I've dealt with this one too many times and I'm tired of it and I call on others who have been mistreated by any hospital to raise their voices and not be silent! The way I was treated was absolutely wrong. I was treated worse than a dog! Because even an animal would've been treated better and do get better treatment than a lot of humans who have no choice but to be seen by these hospitals who care nothing but to make money off sick people! Where is the "hospitality" in that? The nurse who was assisting the doctor assigned to me was equally rude and lacking in professionalism, courtesy, as well as understanding. I'm hurt and my issue has yet to be addressed. Thank you to anyone who took the time to read this as I know reading is not a priority in people's lives these days.. To recap, my pain was not stabilized, as I left there in more pain than when I came, they didn't even hook me up to a pump to give me fluids or check on any of the symptoms I told them I was having. I asked for them to please stabilize my pain before sending me off to have a CT scan and she refused to do so. When the scan was completed, I waited another hour to even speak to her, calling my nurse 2 times before she sent the doctor in and each time the nurses body language was so uncomfortable looking. She didn't even make eye contact or ask me how I'm doing nothing to show that she cared about my wellbeing. So embarrassing. Like why? If you went to school 8+ years to learn about how to heal and help the human body, why would you treat them any less than human? It boggles my mind. When the doctor finally came in, needless to say she was rude. I couldn't get a word in edgewise and when I told her politely to not to please cut me off so I can express my words to you, she got upset and walked out the room! This is not the first time this has happened to me there and I have no grudges or vendettas against this hospital because like I mentioned prior, there are many good doctors and nurses there that do deserve recognition and there are some who should be FIRED. I'm asking for change, I'm asking that people be held responsible for their actions towards the sick. Especially to those sick people who have no cure to their illness. I require justice. Someone should be held responsible for the way people are treated at every single hospital in the country. Not just Swedish Hospital. If you're out there please speak up.
