Gavin Powell was an exceptional instructor throughout the Foundations of Thai Massage course at the Swedish Institute. His teaching style was clear, thorough, and deeply respectful of both the tradition of Thai massage and the diverse backgrounds of his students. I walked away from the course with a solid grasp of both technique and purpose, and I genuinely feel more confident integrating this work into my massage practice. What really stood out was his professionalism and inclusivity. At the beginning of class, Gavin offered students the opportunity to participate in a traditional Thai mantra. As a Christian, I shared with him that when I put my hands together in prayer, I am only comfortable praying to Jesus. He respected that without hesitation and moved forward with grace, making it clear that everyone's beliefs were honored. That moment of mutual respect made me feel safe, seen, and valued in the space. His knowledge is extensive, but what makes him truly effective is his ability to teach with both structure and flexibility. As a recent graduate, I unfortunately cannot recommend this school. For the amount of money students pay, the majority of the learning ends up being self-taught. During my work-study experience, the only truly supportive connections I made were with certain lab instructors and a few genuinely kind staff members. The lab team is the strongest part of the program--they care, they teach, and they want students to succeed. Because of them, the program could have so much more potential. However, the academic side of the program is extremely lacking. Most professors do not actually teach, and online didactics should really be held in person. Students consistently feel dismissed or disrespected by some members of leadership. In my personal experience, Ms. April often spoke to students unprofessionally, and Ms. Peralta, the clinical coordinator, regularly made the clinical process stressful, disorganized, and unnecessarily difficult. Clinical placements are delayed, communication is poor, and professionalism is inconsistent, as she is disrespectful and racist. This affects students and their ability to progress on time. Despite the challenges, the lab instructors truly work hard and create a positive learning environment. If you do choose to attend, rely heavily on your textbooks, build a strong personal study method, and be prepared to advocate for yourself. Massage Therapy program boasts a 64% pass rate for the NYS License Exam, compared with 96% for Queensboro Community College, a MUCH cheaper school that pays its instructors more. When you get here, you'll know you made a mistake just by interacting with the other students in your class. There are a few good instructors still here, and I have no idea why. As a student at Swedish institute , I have been troubled by a number of interactions with Dean Allyson that, in my view, do not align with the professional and supportive standards one would expect from a leader in our institution. Specifically, I have observed instances where Dean Allyson has raised her voice in a manner that many students find unsettling, and her manner of communication characterized by harsh remarked has at times left individuals feeling disrespected and demoralized. I believe that such behavior not only increases stress among students but also creates an environment where support and constructive engagement are compromised. I respectfully request that the matter be investigated and that measures be taken to ensure that all members of the academic community are treated with respect. I found the education to be sub par, the instructors unprofessional and the entire program overpriced. The worst part though? They REALLY do not care about you after you graduate. I've been trying to get my correct transcripts for months and nobody can ever help me. I've since moved out of state and am attempting to get my license in another state. For some genius reason, they do not included your DOB & address on your official transcipts (that you pay for!) like?!? Why? I got a notice about it from the state I am trying to be approved for so I called Swedish for help. GOOD LUCK. As soon as they hear you aren't giving them money, they will not help you. When someone asks me about swedish institute I start with "It's the Harvard of massage schools" I graduated Swedish institute in 2011 with a massage therapy associates degree and have been taking continuing Ed classes with them ever since. Whether you're looking to start your career in massage or continue to better your craft this is the best school for it! (They also offer nursing and physical training now). I had a terrific experience/education at Swedish - I was a part-time student and working full time. From the academics to the social emotional development component ALL OF IT - to the hands on and science courses and the wonderful, dedicated, experienced and knowledgeable staff - I was well prepared to flourish into my new career once I graduated - Especially having had the clinic (hands-on) experience- where I was able to work on real clients given to me for a semester while a LMT supervisor would look over the work and advices when needed through the learning and practice process. The Board's exam for my licensing was a breeze because swedish prepared me in the best way possible. In comparison to other graduates from different schools swedish always does the best in the board exams because they cover an equal amount of hands on courses as well as the science ones. I'm an Alumni from Swedish and my experience was one that was challenging but meant to be in the end. I was an ST straight A student entering and continuing the program for the degree I was obtaining. Unfortunately NYC doesn't see it for you when it comes to being a full time student living in low-income apartments. They consider even though you pay your own rent and utilities that that is considered full rooming and boarding and you're not even living on a school campus. So I had to switch over to MA and I continued to soar and get all the knowledge and support I needed from Swedish. The teachers were involved and amazing and my journey flourished and I obtained my RMA Degree. I now work in Union with Mount Sinai Hospital and will be heading back to school in the future to obtain my Nurse Practitioners Degree. read more

No message left. They called me back EVERY HOUR ON THE HOUR for the rest of the day and never once left a message. Where do I start? I am a student here and the only reason why I am finishing is because I can not transfer my nursing credits already earned. If I was aware of the unprofessionalism and unfairness I would be experiencing in this school I would have never chose to attend. Run if you can. The biggest issue here is the Dean who do not know how to communicate with adults and instead yells in a rude and condescending way. I have addressed this behavior on multiple occasions to no avail and honestly only making things worse. Since my complaint I have experienced bullying from the Dean who for every issue in the building she has the last say. Most staff are intimidated by her and that's exactly how she makes her way. She was not a dean when I first started attending but I can tell you from the day she was put in chair she has made a lot of people uncomfortable. I have seen the best professors resign and we are now left with just a few to teach including herself showing the school is severely understaffed. My last skills semester I was taught by students who did not even graduate yet !! All this and the school is ridiculously expensive. If you have an opportunity somewhere else please take it and save your sanity. I'm currently pushing myself to finish here and everyday I come home I feel uneasy because you know when you're being treated unfairly. Had a nursing professor skip lecture for the last 6 weeks and give a blueprint 6 days before the final and when I complained I was than sent to the dean who said nothing. My experience thus far at this school has been atrocious. If you want to go to a military school where the Dean of nursing is very condescending, not supportive, only wants you in school to take your money then this is the perfect school for you. She will definitely support you in FAILING, yes you read that right.. She wants you to FAIL. During my interview to get into the nursing program, Dean Allison came off very supportive informing me that we are all in this together, she gave me confidence that I will do great. Once I started my semester all changed, Dean began belittling the students and I heard her tell a student that she had no business talking with her because she is going to fail. Dean Chisholm power trips and acts like a drill sergeant with all the students. She told all of the students that we will not have a personal life. She gives zero options when it comes to balancing work and school. How are we supposed to pay for school if we cannot go to work? When you request to speak to her it then becomes the most uncomfortable conversation because she then talks down on you and you leave out of her office/phone feeling like a failure. Deans are supposed to motivate you and encourage you and your career path. Dean Allison does the opposite. Going to Swedish Institute is just giving away your money willingly without learning much. You do have supportive professors that does help you academically however they cannot assist with making it easier for people to work and attend school. If you just happen to talk to the dean and refer to her as Mrs Chisholm or Chisholm she will correct you pointing her finger and rolling her eyes and inform you that "that's Dean Chisholm to you". This Dean wants to put fear into the students which makes it hard to concentrate on your academic. This school is overall GHETTO and I see why because the DEAN OF NURSING ALLISON CHISHOLM IS GHETTO and if I can do it all over again I would choose a different school. This Dean needs a reality check and needs to realize that we are not her kids. There are so many disgruntled nurses out in the field and it seems like the dean wants her students to be a part of the disgruntled nurse team. The CEO needs to rethink this Dean situation because it is coming off very scam-like. If I can do this over, I would choose a different school to become the great caring nurse I know I can be. When you're enrolling, you'll get calls from them multiple times but once you're in the school all that goes away. they only communicate with you if you owe them money, they'll send emails and send you notices in the mail but God forbid they owe you money, all of a sudden no one is available. Please, please be aware that they be over charging, make sure you fully understand the prices and check regularly on how much you're getting charged and what for. Everywhere I go the Swedish institute is recognized and seen in high regards. This is the best massage school in the country and likely the world. You get a sound, robust education and definitely solid preparation for the NYS board exam which is one with the most rigorous standards and requirements and the Swedish Institute raises the standards even higher in their Associate in Massage Therapy program. I have been exposed to therapists and clients from many states and countries and I have noticed how the education I received here has set me apart and open many doors. My employers, colleagues and clients are always very impressed by my training. This is an education that gives a solid foundation to go anywhere, even if you need to move to other states, it makes it so much easier to be already prepared to swiftly take a test and fulfill other states requirements. I feel very fortunate to have learned from their exceptional faculty that have decades of experience in the field and generously shared their knowledge and techniques acquired throughout their career, also keeping active and current in the profession is something very important because they bring current knowledge way beyond the books. The admission office at this college lied to me about the job success rate after graduation from medical billing and coding. Her name is Lucy Luo. I asked her before enrollment, how easy would it be for me to transition to medical billing career, and she told me very easy and that the school just placed a student with this certificate working down the block. After graduation in December 2020, for two years and more I have not found healthcare employment, and all I'm left is increase to my student loans debt. I have a NHA certificate and was told by other associates this certificate is false and no employer are interested with NHA certificate. This school is private for profit. The career office has helped me a few times with job placement; however, all of the jobs they give me have nothing to deal with what I learned at school. The jobs they place me include NYU Langone Perlmutter Cancer Center, as a front desk receptionist. I was terminated after 3 months part time temporary per diem secretary I on reason I don't know how to answer phones. I am never trained at Swedish to learn how to pick up and answer phones. The boss at NYU showed in email how good of a work I did with screen calls to the hospital staff and said this is a very good example of how to screen calls and take down notes next to each patient. Nevertheless, I was let go. At work I was also harassed and bullied by a coworker that I shadow with when I was trained how to do my job. Her name is Denise and she yelled at me when she corrected a minor problem I had on the phone. Also, I felt treated differently, by another coworker named Bianca. Whenever I talked to her, she looked at me with big eyes. I also never got feedback from the floor manager Albina and Ellen about coworkers in the back office I was placed amongst them for being noisy laughing loud and one girl made a comment aloud "orgy" when there were doctors and many patients inside. I attended Swedish Institute in 2010/2011, so it was a little while ago, but to this day, I am still so proud and thankful for my time at this amazing school. It was quite an investment and a huge risk that I took to pursue a career in healthcare as an LMT. From the first day, I felt so supported and encouraged by my teachers and even fellow students at Swedish. These 16 months were intense and difficult. Very trying at times and extremely challenging. I started off in the night program and by the 2nd trimester switched into the AM program due to job/schedule changes. I LOVED the intensity of the classes and how teachers really kept you accountable for your own success. How a teacher can keep an entire class room learning and entertained after working an 8 hour day is INCREDIBLE! I truly appreciate how Swedish also gave us hands-on experience in our own student clinic as well as out in the field at different events. I was reading some of the poor the reviews below and obviously I can't attest to the current staff or faculty there now BUT I can say that even in California where I am currently living/practicing, people KNOW about Swedish Institute. The schools reputation is still top notch. Both clients and employers can sense the difference in the quality of the work and knowledge from Swedish Grads. I believe the education at Swedish helped to really focus on medical massage and being fluent in medical terminology. If you are working outside of a spa environment, this kind of literacy is necessary! I believe there is also a level of confidence that carries us further and makes us more employable in medical offices working along side MD's, Chiropractors, ND's, LAc's and PT's. Currently, I am a Licensed Acupuncturist in California (still practicing massage as well) and I think the anatomy, kinesthesiology, muscle testing, pathology and even some 5 element meridian theory education at Swedish was far superior than what I learned in a MASTERS program for Acupuncture. I truly enjoyed learning Shiatsu. The four semesters of course work at Swedish are what lead me to continue my education in Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine. Someone below mentioned that classes from Swedish do not transfer to other programs in the healthcare field. I can not speak to PT's, Chiro or MD's, but MANY of my classes transferred from Swedish to both PCOM (NYC) and ACTCM (SF). Some of my classes from PCOM in New York didn't even transfer to ACTCM and they were both Acupuncture schools. When looking to pursue a career in healthcare as a Massage Therapist, I think Swedish Institute is still the BEST option, especially in the NY metro area. If you are committed to your future as a Massage Therapist or working in the Healthcare field, I couldn't recommend Swedish more. read more

Ms jack was the first person and last person I spoke to when I was trying to enroll, I was very well confident to go to this school for surgical technologist however Ms Jack changed my mind on going to this specific school, she was very rude unprofessional and didn't have any sources to answer any of my questions, her tone of voice changed to the extreme when I asked specific questions and not only that she got very demanding when I wanted more details before I enroll with financial aid. I kept explaining to her why I couldn't enroll yet and it seemed like she never understood... despite everything I was very polite throughout the whole experience even though she blowed my phone up and whenever I couldn't pick up she talked to me very rudely as if I was her child. After what she put me through I decided to called her one last time to inform her that I won't be enrolling and she literally just said "bye" and hanged up. In conclusion I'm glad I didn't give my money to this school it clearly seems like they don't care about the student but the money . She never took the time to introduce/talk about the school, she just immediately just demanded to enrolled also how weird is it that the acceptance rate for this school is 100% and graduate rate is 23% . I completed the massage therapy program at the Swedish Institute. The administrative staff are complete baffoons. It took me three semesters to get any financial aid reimbursments, kept loosing my hire paperwork when I worked as a in class assistant, LOST my diploma, and then 7 months after completion told me I owed 2700.00 because a grant was revoked AFTER I had an exit meeting with financial aid. I continue to have problems making this payment with them (not cashing checks, not charging me when I signed up for auto pay) so I go in every month and give them a CASH payment. That said the headaches are offset by the AMAZING instructors. If you REALLY pay attention you will leave the school with the tools to be come an excellent massage therapist (there's a lot of bad therapists out there). I've taken many continuing ed courses outside of NYS and I can say as a SI grad you will have a lot more knowledge than a lot of other working therapists out there. The program is expensive for what it is but I made back what I paid for the program in about 6 months. A year and a half later I am now working for myself soley in private practice. read more

The classes were small enough that I was able to get great supervision and insight from the skilled professors who were able to teach from their own experiences with massage over their careers. I really enjoyed my time there, even when I was on the verge of giving up (due to personal issues). The staff helped me through some dark times and gave me all the support that I needed. This school is so creepy. I literally only signed up just to find out more information about their massage program and was pressured into applying the same day. Then they would call me like 10 times in just one hour and text and email me until i reply and i told them i would call them back in 3 days because i was on vacation and STILL they continued calling and texting me and it was specifically Ms. Spanny Jack. When i finally called back they gave me an attitude saying i was obligated to pick up their calls and i was rude and disrespectful for saying i couldnt call them because i was on vacation and saying their calls were giving me anxiety attacks because i felt pressured and then after saying all of that her tone of voice changed and she started being nice and trying to laugh with me and i was like wtf . Also i had to take an assessment with 30 questions and she told me i had to do great to get the deans attention but i only knew the answer to two of them the others i had no clue what the answers were and i guessed and she told me i did phenomenally when honestly i know i failed so she basically lied about my score because they are that desperate for students. Anyways i texted her and told her i wasnt interested in the program anymore and she was trying to be so nice acting concerned and asking what she could do and asking if it was the tution and sounded like she was really going to negotiate the price with me which i dont think she could do legally? and asked if it was because i didnt have a high school diploma (which i do but i havent received it from my school due to covid) and she sounded like she was going to negotiate letting me join even with out a diploma like wtfff?? And when i was like no im just simply not interested she just literally hung up in the middle of the conversation and didnt even tell me if there is anything i need to do to unenroll, just so rude and unprofessional im glad i didnt go to this school they literally just want you for your money please dont waste your time here. read more

This school is just a absolute disappointment.I was there since January 2019 not only they screw me once but four times as a student .The organization is awful,The communication is awful, The assistant massage therapy dean is biased and rude . They don't give you enough hands on practice all they fucking do is more hands on lectures which is worst because most people who graduate in this fucking school can't even give a danm proper massage I've had people who don't know a danm thing about massage gives me a way better massage.Like how the fuck that's possible.!!!!!!!!You can't even fucking being in yourself in this fucking school ,You have to be fake and shit in order to get what you want. I did not come to this school to kiss anyone ass!!! That's why every fucking semester new students are dropping out,Not enough teachers because most teachers left, The librarian I was cool with ,He left and that was really shocking to me. The whole experience feels like you are in high school ,You don't like what I say?Lets talk it out as a fucking danm adult we are! Dont go bitch in the principal office!The only thing they got going for them is the continuing education because they are able to bring other teachers who come teach a course, The receptionist and most teachers are caring and willing to see you succeed other than that I personally would not recommend his school if you are looking for hands on practice but if you are looking to learn more about science courses sure go to the school but just letting you know Watch your back because anyone can stab you in the back and it shouldn't been this way because this is a university not a high school! read more

I don't understand the bad reviews. I had a wonderful experience here. I'm still practicing 10yrs later. You need to do your homework on the chosen field- saying pros and cons. I started my massage practice slowly over 6 years while also personal training than I went into massage therapy full-time and not one day goes by that I regret my decision to both become an LMT and to attend Swedish. I also paid off the remainder of my loans in 2 yrs, it wasn't hard but I didn't want it hanging. read more
