Agave is one of the restaurants you wish was in every town. Not necessarily because you're craving Sangria and Tacos but more because you feel connected to the people around you. Okay so we only went for happy hour (mid walk snack!) so I only can speak on the terms of HH. I want to start off by saying that the deals are fantastic. Sangria was delicious and so was the margarita (the reviews all say they're amazing and I can concur). But the tamales were the true showstopper. I would come back to eat the tamales all day every day! We got the chicken tamales and the green sauce on top was so delicious. I definitely want to try more of the menu next time because the taquitos and queso also sounded good. Our service was very quick and they kept refreshing our chips and salsa. Side note: the salsa was awesome. And the vibes were great too! Fun decor, dim lighting, comfy booths. The pricing is really good for the happy hour menu and honestly the regular menu too. Love this place might be the best Mexican-American restaurant in north west DC. The food is great to start off with and the prices are very reasonable. The place can be a bit hectic at times around 6:30 at peak hours but the service is good and they try their best. The waiters are friendly as well. I recommend the steak burrito and horchata as a drink. 10/10 can't go wrong read more

We have not eaten at the restaurant, but the food is fantastic. We stopped to get 20 tacos for a small gathering and had a Margarita while waiting. I instantly regretted not staying, as the margaritas were excellent--one of the best I've had with fresh-squeezed lime juice. When we got home, we devoured the tacos. Came for lunch on a slow Thursday. Mostly ROMEOs in the house (retired old men eating out). Nice colorful ambiance. Friendly and attentive waitress. Non-intrusive Tejano music. Ordered the Mar y Tierra Burrito (steak & shrimp). Generous filling with juicy meaty bits, two grilled shrimp on top, plus the usual pico de gallo, mex rice, soupy beans in a small bowl, sour cream. Sadly, the melted cheese poured over the burrito cooled into a pretty stiff coating, making for chewy eating. Otherwise okay. Overall, just 3 stars because every item was bland. Apparently, this restaurant knows its WASP Anglo Palisades clientele pretty well and so leaves out all but the mildest savory seasonings. Even the homemade salsa with chips was tepidly seasoned and unremarkable. I'm sure Sweet Agave hits the sweetspot for what this neighborhood is willing to accept in "Tex-Mex" fare, but it's not the real thing. Next time, I'll go back to Guapo's in Tenleytown or Cactus Cantina in Cathedral Heights. Better yet, I'll head for the old reliable Lauriol Plaza on 18th Street. read more

Love Sweet Agave for their happy hour menu prices!!! 4-6p everyday. Best in the dc area hands down. My coworkers and I go here at least once a week after work to unwind. I like that they don't charge extra for their flavor margaritas. As far as dessert goes, I highly recommend their sopaipillas. So soft, warm, and delicious. Every calorie is worth it. read more

Dined here with a friend for lunch. Excellent Tex Mex food in a charming restaurant. My salad was huge and delish. It came full of chicken, beans, tomato, romaine, and the addition of avocado that I requested. Service was attentive without being intrusive. Server said that just about everything is made in house. This is my new favorite restaurant for delicious Mexican food. I have enjoyed each visit here. My favorites on the menu are the Mahi Mahi Fish Tacos, Chorizo Tacos, Fried Yuca, Lomo Saltado, and the Chile Relleno Y Pork Enchilada. My recent favorite has been a special that's a ribeye steak and two shrimp, I just forgot what it's called. My friends and family have tried the fajitas and the Carmarones A La Diabla from what I can remember. Both looked amazing. The service has been solid most nights, and reservations are easy to make. The restaurant is narrow with a good number of TVs, so that could be good or bad depending on the type of environment you want. But one side of every table I have been there are seats that don't face a TV. There is some outdoor seating as well. Parking has been easy for the most part, especially on MacArthur Blvd. read more

Cute establishment sitting on MacArthur Boulevard in the Palisades neighborhood, serving tasty and well prepared Tex Mex dishes. My dinner partner and I both got different versions of their enchiladas (carnitas pork for me, chicken poblano for him) and loved both of them! Interiors is decorated on theme, towards the back of the restaurant is a TV hanging from the ceiling (this can be a bit distracting for whomever is seated facing the back just FYI). Only negative comment I have is that we were seated in a little booth just by the kitchen doors and the vent immediately above us kept dropping water onto the table (including right onto our chips! ) Solved this by moving our dishes away from where the water kept dropping but if you sit in that booth, keep a sharp eye! Easy five stars for sweet agave- I read all the reviews before coming and people had such positive things to say. I share in the sentiment, this is a cozy, welcoming, neighborhood spot. The service was great as were the food and drinks, I came in with a large group but we were well taken care of and everyone enjoyed their food. I had the tamales for an entree but the best thing we ate was the queso with chorizo. The dips were a hit with the whole table. Tried this place for dinner last week. We were able to sit at one of two outdoor tables and I was delighted to find they had and indoor/outdoor happy hour til 7pm. The HH nachos and wings were fabulous, drinks were great prices, and my husband and I shared decided to share a dinner special entree with beef, chicken and bacon-wrapped shrimp. We ended up going home with leftovers because of their awesome portions. Next time, I'll have to remind myself to skip the chips. The servers/food runners were really attentive, coming back a couple times before 7 to ensure we could get one last round of drinks before the end of HH. After HH, I ordered a spicy skinny margarita which had a great kick. Will definitely be back for happy hour and dinner! read more

I absolutely LOVE coming here! I have NEVER had a bad meal, a dish I didn't enjoy, or poor service. The vibe of the place really depends on when you're there: when it's busy, it's loud and fun and funky; when it's slow, it's a nice, quiet and friendly place to relax and wind down and enjoy some food. I always get a house margarita because all the servers make them really well. There's also a great beer selection, if that's your jam. Shelby is probably my favorite server, and she's also the most warm and inviting out of everyone in the place; she often tends bar, and I've been meaning to sit at the bar because she's just that awesome. Onto the food...my favorites are the nachos, the fajitas, and the burrito. Everything is always cooked to perfection, and the staff are super accommodating if you need to alter things. This place is so, so good, I will drive all the way from PG to eat here. I can't stress enough that, if you're reading this, you should try this adorable, cutely decorated, inviting, little restaurant. Amazing as it may sound, I have found another sabroso Mexican restaurant in Washington, DC. The chicken enchilada poblano, with mole sauce, came with a salad so fresh it tasted like they just plucked the ingredients from a nearby garden. Several of the customers spoke Spanish, which is always a good indicator for comida Mexicana. I came here for the extra points on my United MileagePlus dining program (5 point per $). This is a sweet little hidden Tex mex on McArthur Blvd in DC. I have been here with my work team's happy hour and found it quite nice. We were a group of around 10 and seated immediately. We didn't do any reservations before hand. I guess it's usually not that busy all the time. Anyways, our server was very nice and helpful. They surely have one of the best Margarita and that is also with sugar substitute! I went here with a friend and she loves food here. The interior is very welcoming and beautiful with ethnic art. Sweet Potato and Black Bean Flautas had great flavor. I loved their vegetarian fajitas. The entree is good for two people or takeout will last you next day.
