This shop has been here for many, many years I remember going into the cafe when I was a wee boy…read moreabout five or six at that time (50) years ago it was called little Italy and at that time it had all the ornate fittings from that era, wooden benches and stools even at that time it sold ice cream and sweets all the local children loved the shop the main reason. I think was that the owners were Italian. The current owners are related to the previous ones from fifty years ago. Now onto the sweets they sell, imagine every sweet you can think of from your childhood well it's in this shop I mean from my childhood and including yours oh happy days, I bought " lucky potatoes " and after the first bite I was instantly transported back. 50 years . I'm not sure if there are any other shops like this one but no doubt there is, but this is my favourite one if your ever in the area give it a go you want be disappointed

With a whole wall and i mean a whole wall, devoted to jars of loose sweets, this place is a total dream. There is enough sugar in this shop to sweeten an ocean. In addition to the loose sweets there is also the usual assortment of ice cream, choc bars, crisps and the like. A place that is well worth the visit, just don't tell your dentist!!

Better priced than the establishments of this kind in the city centre and with just the same selection, you will leave with an ice cream in one paw, a mix-up of candy crayons and strawberries in the other and chocolate smeared over your face. It will make you feel like a kid who, well, had just been inside a candy shop. And how can that be a bad thing? It is ADHD enducing, but an altogether enjoyable experience. We also picked up some chocolates my husband loves (I can't eat chocolate), and the marzipan is excellent. You'll want to go in both stores for sure. The lady in the shop was very knowledgable about her stock. She was able to match people with their local sweets and talk a lot about the changes sweets have gone through over the years (no more cocaine on our sweeties!!). The gallery/gift shop area was a nice little browse too. The shop is very small so our group of 10 was a bit squashed when some other shoppers arrived. The shop is dog friendly and had some water and food outside for any visiting pooches!

Bains sweet shop isn't expensive and the owner John is such a lovely man, he is so charismatic, passionate and takes the time to chat and pass on his knowledge of making Tablet. He even went the extra mile and sent me the recipe which is amazing! I plan to make it with my niece and hope it turns out half as good as Bains tablet. The kids love it, I love it and I will be stocking up on treats for xmas or buying gift vouchers for a later date. I highly recommend visiting and don't worry if you can't get to the shop you can always order online and buy some of those old favourites from your childhood as a gift for yourself or for someone else you know who has a sweet tooth. Bains literally has all sweets and treats imaginable!

Nevertheless, this place at least adds a bit of colour to an overwhelmingly drab section of the shopping centre and ensures there is a bit of, albeit irritating, life to the place in the shape of hyper kids.
