Yesterday, after driving for the first time for a few hours the day prior, my neck and upper back between my shoulder blades was in massive pain. I called my regular chiropractor, but unfortunately they were both closed and I was out of visits approved by the VA. I called this practice needing fairly urgent help, which I got. Despite my not having been to this practice in a handful of years, the quality and expertise remains the same. The adjustment I was provided yesterday was totally without a doubt the best adjustment I've ever had in my entire life, and I've been to a lot of different chiropractors in two different states. I feel so much better today than I did yesterday. It was an adjustment so lovely and enjoyable, I almost needed a cigarette afterwards (joking) while I enjoyed the instant relief from most of what was ailing me at that moment, immensely satisfying! I would give this practice six or even 10 stars if it was possible. They are so good, that, in addition to my other approved visits at a different location I am going to happily pay out of pocket for more future visits from this practice. At the time I thought they were great, and she basically is fine, but there are a few things I take issue with in retrospect. One is that they wanted me to come in all the time and assured me that it was absolutely necessary, so on a low income (I was serving in Americorps at the time,) I was paying a 50% co-pay on $52 per visit three times a week. When I made my first appointment, no one warned me that it would cost $250. And they told me that they took my insurance, Group Health, and that it covered chiropractic, when actually it only covered chiropractic after back surgery. I was later sent a bill for over $700. The other is that their motto was "A Woman's Gentle Touch." Roxanne is reasonably gentle, and probably better than many male chiropractors about being gentle. But they were using standard manual adjustments, which are the stereotypical "crack your bones" shoves, twists, pops and pokes. If you want truly gentle adjustments, look for a chiropractor who practices Blair Technique or uses a drop table. It's possible to do completely silent, motionless adjustments which are painless, and in my opinion as a bodyworker, more effective. My new chiropractor does things that way and then tests nerve response to see that the adjustment was effective, and it's amazing - and he doesn't even recommend that I come in three times a week, much less ask me to. Other than that, though, the office is clean, the staff is polite, it's basically a nice establishment if your insurance covers it and manual adjustments are the kind you like.

I went to my chiroptactor twice and he did not help anything, in fact, he did the normal maintenance moves he typically did. This was not a normal injury. I left his office so frustrated, after being his patient all these years. I then went to two different doctors, a physical therapist, and a massage therapist. I was prescribed several different medications. Nothing was working. I am normally a very healthy and active person. I soon had malaise and was becoming more and more depressed, not being able to do anything but lie on the floor and cry. I was told it was a muscle injury, a disc injury, to siatica. I had xrays and they showed nothing. No one seemed to be helping. THEN a friend told me about Dr. Lam. My friend said he was getting ready to have back surgery when he heard about Dr. Lam and went to him and was back to full function within 3 weeks with no surgery. So, I called, and amazingly got in two days later (he is typically booked a month out). It was meant to be. Dr. Lam was outstanding. He listened, he asked questions, he tested, he listened, he was personable, he gave me hope. He worked his magic (it hurt, not gonna lie, but in a hurts so good kind of way) and 60 minutes later I am already improved 50 percent. I actually feel like I am going to get better and have hope. I am not in pain and now there is just an ache, much better than the shooting and stabbing pain I was having before I entered his office. He believes I have a sprained s1 (sciatica) ligament, which makes the most sense when he showed me how our muscles and spine function and what my body was doing. I really feel like Dr. Lam was a blessing from God. Dr. Lam clearly cares about people and wants to help. He is not just going through the motions, he genuinely seems like he cares and understands how horrible back pain is. I have a family friend who as had many back problems and I just called him and told him to go see Dr. Lam. When you feel all hope is gone, or you just want to feel better, go see this guy. He knows his stuff. Pure and simple. He will fix your muscles not throw medicine at you like so many doctors do. Thank you God for this Doctor. This is my new clinic.

After two visits with minimal adjustments and some stretching the pain is gone, and it hasn't come back since (it's been at least three months). What I appreciate about Dr. Lathrop is that he takes his time, doesn't over-prescribe adjustments, and doesn't up-sell to get you to come back for services you don't need. On my first visit he spent an hour asking about my health and habits, watching the way I walk and sit, and feeling my back. Then he stretched my lower back and showed me stretches I could do for self care. The second visit was a follow up. He made one more adjustment and sent me on my way. His goal is to provide you with the tools to keep yourself healthy on your own (if possible), not to get you on a rotating plan of unnecessary visits to make a buck.
