So FUCKING good. As a lover of Felice, I can't believe it took me this long to try Teddy's. The…read moreribs were my personal favorite but we got a little bit of everything and it was all individually it's own experience. Definitely tops a lot of other barbecue spots in Texas that also come with 2-3hr waiting times so having this in my hometown is awesome. It's pretty tightly packed in there especially during rush hour but having a full bustling house adds to the lovely feeling of eating Texas barbecue in this crazy heat. Wish I could have tried the mac and cheese but it always gives me a reason to come back!

Teddys BBQ: A Disappointing Experience Unworthy of the Top 50…read moreTeddys BBQ, a celebrated winner of the "Texas Monthly Top 50 BBQ Awards," arrived with high expectations that were, unfortunately, decimated by the actual experience. Arriving at 11:10 AM, just after opening, we anticipated fresh, high-quality smoked meats and homemade sides. What we received was an uninspiring meal that leads me to question the legitimacy of its Top 50 status--and frankly, its place in the Top 100. This visit was a letdown, especially compared to the twelve other far superior BBQ joints we tasted this past week. The Meats: Misses and One Minor Hit The foundation of the barbecue here was weak, suggesting corner-cutting or, worse, reheating of old product. * Brisket: This was the biggest disappointment. The slice was terrible--dry, lacking juice, and with a bark that was chewy rather than crisp. It looked and tasted suspiciously like leftovers reheated from the day before, which is unacceptable minutes after opening. * Ribs: Nothing special here. They lacked the depth of smoke flavor and suffered from a distracting, undesirable "hammy" taste. There wasn't much meat on the bone, and the glaze was applied too lightly, failing to add any necessary sweetness or texture. * Jalapeño Cheese Sausage: This was the sole highlight of the meat offerings. It was a nice standard sausage with a good peppery snap to the casing and a satisfying ooze of cheddar cheese. It offered a nice, reliable counterpoint to the lackluster smoked proteins. Failed Opportunity: The Texas Twinkie The infamous Texas Twinkie completely missed the mark. While the basic concept of a bacon-wrapped, cream-cheese-stuffed jalapeño is sound, the execution here was poor. The filling was overwhelmingly cream cheese, which completely sucked the flavor out of the jalapeño and bacon. It was a great opportunity wasted by failing to include a bit of smoked brisket or chicken to give it complexity. Sides: Bland, Bland, Bland The sides tasted uninspired, suggesting they were prepared from a can or box rather than crafted from scratch--an unforgivable sin for a purported Top 50 establishment. * Creamed Corn: It was creamy but utterly bland. It needed significant elevation--perhaps charring the corn kernels or adding some diced jalapeño pieces for heat and brightness. * Mexican Rice: This was mushy and flavorless. It desperately lacked the savory depth and spice expected of Mexican rice. A small addition of pork or brisket trimmings would have provided necessary flavor and prevented it from tasting so generic. Dessert: An Unprofessional Finish The Grapefruit Pie was the final letdown. The filling tasted okay, but the crust was clearly store-bought. To be considered a Texas elite, every component should be homemade and excellent. This felt like an amateur concession. Final Verdict Overall, Teddys BBQ was profoundly uninspiring. Given that we arrived right after opening, expecting the freshest quality, and having recently toured 12 genuinely great BBQ places, this location falls far short. It simply does not belong in the Top 50, or even the Top 100. Teddys has a lot of room for improvement if it wants to justify its ranking.

I have been here in south padre a few days now and the places people have been telling us to go to…read moreeat have been very mediocre..however after reading the reviews on Mahi Nics I knew we had to try it out. This is my kind of place, chill vibe at the marina, looking at beautiful boats on the water. The food was outstanding! we had blackened shrimp tacos and blackened mahi tacos with a side of chips and pico, (all freshly made) and 2 frozen drinks that tasted like dessert. EVERYTHING WAS AMAZING!!! And I am not exaggerating, it has been the best food I have had since I landed here. Do yourself a favor and get out of the crappy strip mall restaurants and give this place a go. It feels like you are on vacation and it won't break the bank either...very reasonably priced for the amount of food you receive and the quality of the food. I wish I took photos but I was so hungry when I arrived and kind of forgot.. highly recommend!

Unfortunately, we found the food a bit underwhelming compared to some of the other restaurants we visited during our stay. We ordered the mahi tacos, and while the sauce was nice, the tacos came out somewhat cold. They weren't bad, but they just didn't leave much of an impression. The service was alright as well. We arrived about 10 minutes after opening and ended up standing around for a bit before someone came over to take our order. Overall, we loved the ambiance and location, but the food and service didn't quite measure up to some of the other spots we tried in South Padre.

We arrived for an early lunch and tried the brisket and mixture so we could have both lean and fatty. Most everything is a la carte, so if you're used to making fajitas or tacos out of everything you will need to buy a package of freshly made, freshly heated tortillas, beans, and ask for cilantro and onions. I had to purchase a mild and a habanero salsa as well. Overall, we had a great experience as we dined in one of the corner tables. Service was friendly and like family. The food was so delicious but let's face it, this is not craft central Texas bbq partly because the food is smoked using mesquite and there is the mexican influence being so close to the border. Because of this, although the brisket was delicious in its own way the star of the show is the barbacoa here. It's so good its addicting. This is without saying, but Vera's is a must stop if you're coming to Brownsville for any reason.

A friend had experience with dynamite and knew where to get enough for my crude purposes. Amazingly quick and easy to create a hole in the ground. I doubt that's how Vera dug hers even if this is Texas. My own system imho was better, likely because I applied my creative talent almost exclusively to chivos and wild pigs. But the bbq here is great to be sure with a lingering aftertaste that somehow tells you it's not been cooked in a backyard Weber. Indescribably essential experience if you're in the area.
