I'd first found Sweet Lydia's at the Salem farmers market and recently visited their shop in Lowell. It's more than just their delicious confections--it's also a fantastic wine and cheese shop. I forget the name of the man who assisted me, but he was awesome. I was looking for cheese and wine (along with their marshmallows) for dinner later that night. I was recommended the most delicious Australian marinated goat and sheep cheese and the Christina gruner veltliner, a funky, slightly effervescent version which I loved. There's also crackers, olives, etc. so you can make a great cheese board from here. To find Sweet Lydia's, when walking on Merrimack Street, look up. I couldn't easily find this place but it's upstairs and there is a small sign so it's hard to find. But it's worth the search and I look forward to returning. read more

Every time I visit my son in Lowell, I have to go here. I'm trying to work my way through all they have. The marshamallows are really special. I first enjoyed them plain but now I like the seaonal flavors. Yesterday I tried cranberry and they were wonderful. So fresh they melted in my mouth. All the chocolates I've tried as well as the Caramels are also delish. Yesterday I tried the almond joy bark. Soooooo much better than the candy bar it is named after. Last year I placed a phone order and they were so accommodating. I was late ordering for a birthday but they made it happen. I just wandered into this place yesterday, partially because there seems to be a cool bar in an old Bank vault below it in the evenings. The clerk told us they specialize in marshmallows but that doesn't really do them justice. They are the best marshmallows I've ever tasted! This place has an amazing mastery of texture, and balance in their treats! We got a bag roasted coconut covered ones, they are cut into half cubes which was not just cool looking but made the proportions of marshmallow to coconut really tasty. The texture is a big part of what made it great and I can't describe it well. Fluffy, firm, airy and yielding in your mouth somehow. I also had something like a s'more turtle that was just perfect! If you are marshmallow or chocolate lover or both, you absolutely have to try Lydia's. Nothing compares, not even the Williams Sonoma variety. They are pillows of pure joy! I stopped in today and could easily have bought the place out. The chocolate confections all looked amazing. The young lady behind the counter was helpful, kind and took the time to share her perspective on not using corn syrup, etc. Whatever she is doing, she is doing it right. Try the coconut ones and the vanilla in hot chocolate. Each one is a gift. The seasonal flavors I bought today, cranberry, egg nog and gingerbread, will be going in Christmas stockings but hoping everyone shares, at least with me. Fairly priced too as marshmallows are a lot of work to make in my opinion having tried it a few times. Best ever! There's an almost secret product that sits quietly and discreetly on the table next to the wall called "Smorsels". You'd practically miss it because it's just a modest clear bag of dark chocolate covered marshmallows with cinnamon graham cracker crumbs hidden inside, but is one of my favorite addicting snacks to pick up when I'm stopping in to Sweet Lydia's. Light and fluffy, they feel like little chocolate covered pillows on the tongue and they make awesome additions to hot cocoa. Of course, there are so many things to become addicted to in the shop, but the "Smorsels" are somewhat of an insider secret that only a true Lydia's fan has experienced. Sweet Lydia's is the place to go if you want a desert or candy that is handcrafted, delicious, and... weird. Not bad weird, but the best kind of weird. Tim Burton weird; the sort of weird that makes you feel a little uncomfortable but distinctly warm inside. Clearly deranged minds developed these wonderful treats. I can't think of another place where I'd rather buy chocolate covered bacon caramel, small-batch flavored marshmallows, or artisanal vegan candy bars. In fact, I'm not sure another such place exists. I used Sweet Lydia's pumpkin spiced marshmallows on a sweet potato casserole for two separate Thanksgiving dinners this year, and they were a hit! Don't be fooled into thinking these are glorified Jet Puffed marshmallows - you can taste the difference with fresh (Sweet Lydia's makes them to order), non-processed ingredients. We ducked into Sweet Lydia's just before closing last night and, never having been in before, picked up a couple things that looked interesting - some peppermint marshmallows, and a box of chocolate and sea salt -covered caramels, and a chocolate marshmallow...thing...with a ridiculous name that I unfortunately can't remember now. My wife loved the marshmallows; I definitely appreciated them as well-made but also realized they weren't really my thing alone. In hot chocolate or something, I'm sure they're fantastic. The caramel, though, was like nothing I've had before. Soft but not runny (silky, I guess?) sweet but not vanilla-y like commercial caramels, and impossible to eat in a rush no matter how much you want to. For lack of a better way of putting it, eating them takes brainpower and deliberation. I've never had anything like them. But as exceptional as they were, it was the chocolate marshmallow thing that completely rejiggered my brain - a 2" x 2" marshmallow, topped with a soft chocolate cookie, topped with caramel, and dipped in milk chocolate. It was so amazing, I never want to eat a Twix again. It's the Eli's root beer of confectionery. I am immensely pleased, and I'll definitely be back. read more

This spot is a gem in downtown Lowell. I first found them through the SOWA market and I am very happy to say I have visited their store location as well (many times). The quaint shop has quite the selection of goodies ranging from chocolates, to the famous maple bacon caramels and coconut marshmallows (other varieties of both available), to the newly added cupcakes. If you're in need of a sweet spot that won't disappoint this is your place. Try the smorsel and the homemade peeps because those are my absolute favorites! Really really nice. Ive done big orders here and i have done small little things like valentines cupcakes and strawberries. They are super responsive, friendly and always answer the phone. I would recommend getting a cake here for sure. It is reasonably priced and tastes way better than market basket or hannaford. read more

Love Lydia and love Sweet Lydia's. She is as sweet at her candy! Lydia helped create a custom candy bar, "Key to My Heart" that I used to propose to my boyfriend. The candy bar was amazing, everything I hoped it would be. She then allowed us to use her shop as the background for some of our engagement pictures. So I saw many reviews on here and decided to try this today with my friends. I bought one Passion Fruit Marshmallow, one Caramel Smores, and a Tropical fruit candy bar. The marshmallow was extremely strong, even though I love passion fruit maybe it was a texture thing as I have never fully enjoyed marshmallows. But it was bright and powerful! The Caramel Smores was my favorite! Prefect in every way, the layers of graham, and marshmallow,caramel and then the coating of chocolate on the outside were decadent and rich! The tropical fruit candy bar was good as well, but very sweet and strong, I could only eat half and its only a 2.5 ounce bar. All in all my experience was good and I will go back when I have someone to bring to try it out or if I am yearning for a sweet something! Also the store was very tidy and its cool step up in one of the historical buildings in Downtown Lowell. read more

$7 is a lot for a bag of marshmallows, but it's worth it if it's a high quality product. Well, I've been buying Sweet Lydia's products for several years. I've bought dozens of candy bars and marshmallows over the years (always the passion fruit flavor, my favorite!). Unfortunately, the last bag that I bought had very little flavor. I was disappointed, so my husband took it back to the store to try to get an exchange thinking it was just a bad batch (like any reasonable retailer would do). This is a product I have had many, many times before and I knew it was off. Never had a problem until this one. The salesgirl wouldn't even do an exchange (two marshmallows out of the package had been eaten....seriously) and told him he had to email Lydia. Being a sweet husband, he did. That was over a week ago, and we've gotten no response. In the meantime, I also reached out via the facebook page....no response. So unfortunately, I will not be buying from Sweet Lydia's anymore. If you are going to ignore longtime customers after they attempt three times to reach out to you, after they go through the hassle of trying to return a defective product and being turned away, you aren't a business that deserves loyal customers. Just for comparison, to how you SHOULD deal with a customer complaint, a few years ago I bought a chocolate from Lake Champlain that was missing the peppermint crunch in it. I emailed them, and what did they do? They sent me an entire box of chocolate for free! It cost them less than $10 to do that. I was downtown having lunch and passed by Sweet Lydia's and stopped in for some treats for my family. The first thing we noticed was there was a dead fly laying on the cupcake display in the window. These are not the cupcakes you eat, of course, but not a great way to display yourself on the street. We purchased a marshmallow coated in chocolate, some caramels (stout & pretzel), and some chocolate covered cookies for the kids. The marshmallows were really not great. I make my own in the winter (so very easy) and mine are 10x better than these. These tasted like the kind you get in the supermarket. Not at all what I was expecting. The caramels were very good. The guy working the register said it was his first day and he was having a rough time. There was a jar of sliced marshmallows on the counter and my sister asked if they were samples. He wasn't sure so he went and asked the person working out back. She came out front and said "no, they are not" and walked away. It would have been nice to say "Those are not samples, but if you would like to try a piece we can do that". When you're asking people to pay $7 for a package of marshmallows, what's the harm in letting them try a small portion? Samples sell! Or maybe in this case, it would not have. Lydia now has has her own store front at 160 Merrimack Street, formerly home of Charro's Bakery. I believe the store opened at the end of November. A store means a bigger kitchen and more product! I love Sweet Lydia's! My husband and I stumbled upon it after having dinner down the street and I'm so glad we did. Everything here is amazing. Chocolate covered bacon-omg. The homemade marshmallows are to die for and come in awesome flavors. What really stands out for us is the vanilla caramels. BUY THIS. They are perfectly sweet and buttery and everything a caramel should be. We will literally stop any time we are remotely nearby to stock up. This is boss level chocolate and marshmallows. If you go keep an eye out for the cupcakes in a jar which are sometimes by the register. Also try the various bacon chocolate combos. I discovered this store when I was going to school across the street at Middlesex and it totally cheered me up because I had quit/sort of got fired from my last job and I was all bummed out and the chocolate really hit the spot endorphin wise. Sweet Lydia's created favors for my daughter's wedding. Shannon was lovely to work with; willing to do anything and everything I requested. The boxes of two dark chocolate s'morsels with heart sprinkles on top and two raspberry marshmallows were PERFECT. The presentation, with the candies in truffle papers, was so sweet. I "met" Sweet Lydia's at the Lowell Farmers' Market over the summer and was thrilled to hear about the storefront opening in November. Although all the sweets are amazing, Sweet Lydia's claim to fame is her s'mores. Somehow she manages to get all the campfire goodness of a traditional s'more in a somewhat-less-gooey package (great for mailing or giving as gifts!), then switches it up with all sorts of flavor combinations. Homemade marshmallows? Who knew you could do that? My husband and I had Sweet Lydia create mini-s'mores as favors for our 10th Anniversary party. She even did a quick turn-around for me, getting them all to me within a couple weeks. They came in clear boxes of 4 with a personalized label (including color of ink and ribbon!!). [My small criticism is that the s'mores move around in the boxes, so often were flipped over or sideways by the time they reached people. My mom and I "straightened" a bunch before the party, but it wasn't easy to do without disturbing the ribbon and label.] We could even choose what flavor of mini s'more we wanted. It was economical enough that we could do a box of 4 for each guest, even though our budget was quite small. Being the procrastinator that I am, some absentee guests didn't get their favors until 6 months later (yes, really) --- and I was told that they were still delicious, not stale at all! [The big s'mores are sealed in plastic and have a long shelf-life. The mini ones were not, but sugar and sugar and sugar - not a lot to go bad, I guess!] I enjoy stopping by the storefront any time I get the chance. The various brittles are fantastic, and I always get a s'more of some sort. She has it set up like an old penny candy shop. It's up a short flight of stairs, which might deter some people; in that case, check her website to find out which farmers' markets she might be attending, or order something online.
