The food outshined the service!…read more Ambiance: 4 stars Food: 5 stars Service: 2 stars Well, I came here with a friend for lunch. He loves the place and said the Gyros are fantastic. So I went with his recommendation. First impressions: The place is small and nicely located in the District at Prairie Trail in Ankeny. They have adequate seating and were only slightly busy when we arrived (I would say it was at half capacity the entire time we were there) We stood at the reception location for a while before we were 'greeted' and finally seated. We sat for quite a while before the guy with the headset to came back to take our orders. This was the weird part - he was fine, but he spoke so quietly we were not sure he was addressing us or talking to someone in his headset. Eventually we got our orders in, and we again waited. Some time later the water showed up, then after another pause the drinks we ordered were delivered, and sometime later the food showed up. He even remembered the dipping sauce which I thought I was going to have to ask for. We ate our entire meals without once being asked how things were, and eventually after the food was all gone, he came back to unceremoniously plop the bill on the table, and after another extended period he came back to process the payment. All-in-all the interaction with this guy was 'just weird'. (It was suggested that he might be the son of the owner...) He was doing his job but there was absolutely not any extra effort put in to make us feel welcome, and the total lack any real interaction was off-putting. The overall appearance of the place was nice and appeared clean, the decor was fresh and classy. However the bar area around the kitchen was very cluttered and looked like it was being used for overflow storage and it was a bit chaotic and had lots of clutter. Please forgive the fact that I forgot to take pictures of the delicious food. I got into conversation with my friend and just forgot! It was a very well made traditional Gyro with generous portions of meat, fresh hummus and a perfect portion of super fresh tzatziki sauce. I ordered fresh jalapeños and they got that right too! The side of fries were delicious as well, seasoned perfectly, crispy and fresh, and the garlic sauce...well did not lack for garlic! Wowza!! Overall I do recommend this place for the food! I will most likely return and I hope that the service will be a little better next time around.

Still, it was nothing that would ever draw me back given the discomfort we three felt from the waiter. Sorry, we were hoping to find a gem. We only found a dour place to eat and drop $45 for three meals.

Street parking right outside and we walked in and was greeted warmly. Main street almost hides this little gem. The name of the restaurant illuminated on the floor. We grabbed a great seat and got a full run down of the menu and specials. Table of 4 and we were treated like royalty. The ambiance is warm here. The chef is an artist. They are super careful that all the foods don't come into contact with gluten. I have to say that if you walked in and ordered not knowing anything I mentioned above, you would never know that the entire menu is gluten free. It was a brunch for us. I was very excited with the menu options. It was selective and well described. My mom was super excited about the chocolate chip pancakes and the waitress talked up the cinnamon roll. The Slap Jack meal was three chocolate chip pancakes. How can a pancake by fluffy and plump at the same time? You get the meat of your choice on top of that. I picked the sausage and it was full of flavor. The other two at the table got The Early bird Shakedown. A very generous helping of hash browns, slow cooked brisket, cheese, white gravy, and eggs. The brisket on breakfast is divine. I stole a few bites from the hubby and it was savory and melted in my mouth. The waitress was friendly and attentive. Although it was a little quiet, people started feed in. It's a great restaurant and I hope it gets the traffic it deserves. We about rolled out of there full and happy.

They're so hard to obtain in the south but I saw the box lunch and thought why not. I got got the #14 Turnberry on sourdough. It's a huge mountain of Smoked Turkey, Havarti, cranberry chutney & cream cheese. Sounds as if it doesn't blend but oh it does. The Sourdough was THICK; Texas toast slices. They loaded a hefty amount of chutney and creame cheese on to it, too. Thus, a whopping sandwich! I was able to grab a garlic pasta on the side with one of their equally massive cookies. I totally forgot that they go BIG! Big flavor, big bites, big impact, delicious bites I go to Paris often and the open-air resturant feels like a parisan establishment. I do wish they had outside seats.

I usually get the turkey club - the quality of their turkey is great and they LOAD the sandwich high with meat and toppings. My mom's favorite is their ham salad - she is obsessed! I also love their variety of classic deli sides. I've had their potato salad, but this time got the broccoli salad: so good. Service was quite slow this time, but it seemed to be a new staff member learning the ropes. We took ours to go but it's a nice experience inside. Overall, good prices, great quality and generous portions for what you get!

We did get the large version, but we weren't expecting them to be so big lol. All of the ingredients were really fresh and full of flavor. The bread was perfect, too! Even the sandwich we got for our daughter was delicious; it was simple, but sue "inhaled" it lol. We also got the BbQ chicken chili which had great flavor, but it was more like a chili flavored soup. I dipped my leftover bread in it, so it worked out lol. When we ordered, we tried to do so online, but that was a pain. So, we called in and the customer service was excellent! The guy that took our order was very nice, patient, and informative, which was very appreciated since we had just had issues with the website lol. We ordered for pickup and our food was placed nicely in the bags and nothing was spilling or overflowing onto anything else. Overall, the inside of the restaurant was great, even though we didn't dine in. It looked quite clean and was pretty relaxing. Staff were really nice in person as well. 3*17*25

It was a dark and stormy afternoon…read more... I was wandering around Ames mid-day last week with a lot of time on my hands. At Lunch time, I didn't feel like a sit down waiter restaurant, nor did I want to go into HyVee and choose a pre-wrapped Sammy. So after a little Yelp searching, the West Street Deli came up. West Street Deli is just down the street from my Ames Barber (Troy) and just as close to Mother's Pub. The street is its own little business District, and feels far away from Lincoln Way. I ordered a Cajun Tuna Melt which was unlike any sandwich of this type that I had experienced. It was well prepared and was flavorful in many ways, including a little kick at the end. A beer would have gone well with this, but I stayed with water, while comfortably seated by a window within their dining room. A very pleasant experience and a for sure future visit.
