Hurts is one of our favorite donut chains, and the West Des Moines outlet our favorite stop inside the franchise. It's convenient to the interstate, surrounded by ample parking, and it's open 24 hours a day! We stopped twice on our most recent visit to the area, once late at night, and once in mid-afternoon. A long line at 11 PM, and all but deserted at 3 PM. Lots of choices, all well made and fresh at both times, and getting a sixth donut free with an order of five is (pardon the pun) icing on the cake. Service here is friendly, and that always enhances the experience. We recommend that you pay Hurts a visit. read more

Right in the the middle of Retail City is this glorious donut place; great staff, great smell, great taste, and a very hip space to see and hang. I did'nt get a pic of the expanse of donutty choices but you can imagine something for everyone two times over and over again! I can reccomend the Cookie Monster and the Homer as both take you back to TV land, jumbo Cinnamon Twist is soo juicy in donut terms, Apple Strudel is super fresh, and the regular Cherry is an old~fashion no hold sugar delight. OH I can't forget the Cotton Candy dandy which has a tuft of Cotton Candy that never made it home...all these had one thing in common, the donut base is a well made morsel that smells and tastes like paradice. Oh man what a fun time. I pulled up with a minivan full a college guys ready to eat some donuts and sucker punch people and this shop didn't disappoint. Dave welcomed us when we walked in. (Dave is the owner of Hurts Donut or as I like to call him Chief Donut himself.) Let begin with the donuts first. My God I have never seen better flavors. As I started reading the labels my reaction was "Oh that looks good, oh that would be good, shoot I gotta try that one, definitely getting that one." I forced myself to stop reading the labels for fear of dropping a few thousand dollars on donuts. My drink was amazing too. I got a Nitro Cold Brew with a shot of caramel to really max my sugar intake for the night. Dave quips that Hurts Donut is open 25 hours a day, 8 days a week (run the quick maths on that one). Always a positive experience. Dropped in to pick a few donuts as a spring break treat. No line and some measures in place to help with social distancing. Staff was helpful and easy to work with my girls to pick out the perfect donut. We did eat onsite but there were no other guests at the time. We are proactive with COVID exposures and we would not have eaten onsite if others in the business as there is not room to properly social distance as it has limited seating and room for a line to order. Selection, selection, selection...what a beautiful thing! Not only was my mouth watering but my eyes were having a hard time deciding what to focus on. Each new offering I saw was better than the last! I decided on the German chocolate, maple bacon, and cinnamon roll. The German chocolate - a moist chocolate cake donut with a velvety chocolate glaze and beautiful dollop of coconut pecan frosting right in the center. It's like a GC birthday cake for one. I almost didn't want to bite into it, as it was so very, very pretty that I didn't want to spoil its beauty. But I did...am I'm not sorry...because my tummy is soooooo happy! The perfect chocolate fix, with a lovely added texture. The maple bacon - there's only one way to describe it: COVERED...because it is covered in bacon. If it wasn't defined as a maple bacon donut, then you may not even know that the glaze exists...because it is COVERED in bacon. It was the first bite I took, and the first donut I finished in it's entirety. Need I say more? Lastly, and most notably, the head-sized cinnamon role. And, as large as they are while naked, on display in the case, they really come into their own once they're piled with that phenomenal frosting. I was thrilled to learn that they aren't dry for being so big (my biggest complaint elsewhere) and contain the absolute perfect amount of cinnamon. When I moved to Iowa, I was looking for a place to buy something to gift while leaving my clients in shock and awe! Well, I search for different places and I saw that Hurts Donut came up. At first I thought it was just another donut shop but when I parked my car and started to walk into the building, I saw that it was something different and unique. I walked in and ordered to dozen donuts and they were just looked amazing! The restaurant has an 80s' feel and very hip! You can see into the kitchen and see how they make them. (I came in the afternoon so they were done). They have so many options that I would be here all day to describe all the flavors. But to name a few, they have oreo, Cookie Monster, red velvet, double chocolate, chocolate frosted (Ring). I had the double chocolate and the Ring. You can tell they were freshly made because they just fell apart and very moist. No wonder my clients were very impressed and happy to see their donuts because they loved them! Service was bad. Ordered a dozen and was forced out of the way by the young blonde gentleman in an effort to serve the next customers. My coffee was made properly the first time i saw, then it was handed to a coworker to have instead and when my drink was remade it was made WRONG. I ordered a caramel machiatto and they served it mixed and with no flavor they made a cafe latte instead. This place is so unorganized run by one adult and a bunch of uneducated teens making minimum wage. Like little oompa loompas at wonkas chocolate factory sucking the teet of the owner in an attempt be trained. It's a shame how poorly this donut shop is run.
