The Raeford Hoke Museum is located in Raeford, NC. It is located on 5 acres. The museum is housed…read morein a 1905 house referred to as the McLauchlin-McFadyen House. The house is around 6,000 square feet. There are two parking spots on the street, or you can park in between the trees in the longer driveway. The rooms have themed exhibits, and you can view the upstairs as well. There are also outside buildings to view, including the Parker-Ray house, a school, a red barn, a country store, an emergency building with the 1921 fire truck and a smokehouse. But these buildings were locked during my visit, even though I was told they would be open during museum hours. Besides the architectural history of the house, it was constructed of long-leaf pine that came from the property. Outside, there are the iconic columns and the portico roof. Inside, you will find the high ceilings and the wide central hall. The hand-carved mantels above the fireplaces shouldn't be missed. The house has two staircases, one for the owners and another for the black servants who worked there. The main hall also features a piano to show the importance of music in the home. You will find a military room with information about nearby Fort Liberty and the Raeford National Guard. One of the rooms is about the Civil War. The room contains uniforms and important documents. The Native American room features artifacts from indigenous peoples, especially the Lumbee Tribe. A custom-made Lumbee doll is one of the artifacts. The African American room pays tribute to the folks who made an impact in Hoke County. There is a photo of the servants who worked in the house. They were paid workers, not slaves. Some locals recreated this photo, so you will find that next to the original. A retired music teacher, Mary Archie McNeill, donated her dolls to the museum. The local government room tells you about the mayors of Hoke County and other important government officials. The upstairs bathroom was transformed into a wildlife room with local plants and animals in the area. There is a replica of the "Tornado", the first locomotive to arrive in Raleigh. The kitchen that was added to the house later was fun to view, as I enjoy seeing the old kitchen tools and trying to figure out how they were used. They had shifted from open fire cooking to wood stoves. One exhibit deals with turpentine, tobacco and cotton, as these were the major industries in Hoke County. There is a replica of a farm and detailed exhibits about the crops. The medical room is all about rural medicine with the country doctor bag, medical tools and apothecary bottles. You can read about the doctors, too. Quilts were a tradition for family legacies for both art and bedding. There are vintage sewing machines on display too. I enjoyed the display celebrating the Women of Hoke County. Mary Archie McNeill, the retired music teacher. Eliza Jane Pratt was the first woman from North Carolina elected to the U.S. House of Representatives. Marcella Locklear, a member of the Lumbee Tribe, made the handcrafted Native American doll on display. The farm equipment room has smaller pieces like hand tools such as hammers, axes and saws. The Raeford Hoke Museum is a well done even without the fancier exhibits of other museums. It is well researched and documented. A museum in a historic house is the perfect setting for learning about Hoke County and the everyday people who played a part in it. Best of all, admission is free, although they did have a donation box near the entrance.

If that lot is full there is another lot by the Museum Annex. Admission is also free. The Museum is inside a restored railroad depot for the Cape Fear and Yadkin Valley Railroad. The museum displays have a lot to read if you choose or you can just look at the artifacts, so make sure to give yourself enough time. The museum covers many topics from fashion to banking to the railroad to the Cape Fear River to Civil War to law enforcement to the fire department to books about Fayetteville. Each topic has a section for you to learn about. The museum is on two levels and you can use the stairs or take the elevator. The Museum Annex is a short walk away and had displays with vintage cars; a gas station; an 1880 Steam Pump Engine and provides history about the fire department. Make sure to check out both buildings of the museum. I enjoyed my visit to this museum and some of the exhibits rotate so I need to go back again.

I really enjoyed this race. I have been to 30 different race tracks across the South and I have to…read moresay that this is one of the best oval dirt tracks I have been to. Let me just say that it is big. Everything is big about this race track. It has a big parking lot, a big race track, a big grand stand and etc. You can see the whole race track from any seat. I had no problems in parking and left the race track easily. The race track food was delicious as expect to stand in long lines at the concession stands but they are not real long. On Scene: I parked next to some other pickup trucks that happen to be tailgating. I never been to an oval dirt race track where I have seen tailgating. I have only seen this at NASCAR race tracks and football games. Anyway, I sat on my tailgate for a few minutes to prepare for watching the races. Then, I grabbed my lawn chair and bought a pit pass for so I can go wherever I wanted including the grand stands. I walked through the pits looking at some of the race cars as I was going to the grand stands to set up my lawn chair. I picked a place to put my chair as high up as possible so I could see all of the race track. This way, I can see everything and really enjoy the entertainment. Next, I left my seat for the pits to take pictures of race cars and talk to put crew members. One tip I would give is to be alert and make sure you don't get in anybody's way while in the pits as you don't want to bother them. I like walking in the pits a few hours before the race during the day. You can take pictures like I did and can easily see the race cars. Then, at night you can sit in the grand stands and watch the race.

I didn't read up on it enough to learn why the lanterns were released, but it was definitely a cool event. Summer time races typically occur late in the evening when the weather has cooled down and the cars run better. This is always a fun and welcome atmosphere for anyone looking to enjoy a good race or demolition derby (when scheduled).
