$2 for a small (up to 2 flavors) and $3 for a large (up to 3 flavors) - such a good deal. You wouldn't really want more than that amount anyway, and it's the perfect panacea for summer lethargy. I stumbled upon SweetWater yesterday at Hillsborough's Last Friday and my eye was immediately drawn to the "genuine New York ice" sign. Oh really, now ... I didn't go because I'm a NY ice snob - and honestly, I'm not a huge fan of NY Italian ices. The two bike owners (yes, the bikes are attached to these adorable mint-colored ice-containing cartons) were amiable and enthusiastic without being pushy; they got us to try most of their flavors (which obviously didn't need much convincing). Their personal favorites are coconut and peanut butter, and I can totally see why. I fell in love with the peanut butter (water, sugar, peanut butter, and peanut butter chips) ice, which definitely cannot be found in NYC. The coconut did taste like NY Italian ice coconut, but smoother and better. The watermelon tasted like a jolly rancher. I ended up getting a strawberry & peanut butter small combination, which lasted me about half an hour. It was thoroughly enjoyable while it lasted (though now that I've gotten less of a sweet tooth, I really didn't want any sweets after that). They don't have a website, but they are on facebook (http://www.facebook.com/swaterices) and twitter so that you can find them in the Triangle area. My favorite Italian ice in the Triangle. I have been seeing SweetWater at the American Tobacco Campus on Fridays lately and it's the perfect afternoon treat. Also it's gives me a good excuse to take break from work. I tried a number of flavors - watermelon, rainbow, lemonade, raspberry, and peanut butter. I was a bit skeptical about peanut butter but it's so good especially with the peanut butter chunks in it! Very creamy also. Overall my favorite flavor is watermelon but all the other flavors are just as good and refreshing. Also the owner said if you plan to visit, you can text him your favorite flavor and will have it there for you. Definitely will keep that mind. We tried SweetWater Ices at two different bridal shows and I could not forget how delicious they were! I couldn't forget them and my husband surprised me a few months before our wedding and booked them. Great professional service and loved by all our guests. We had wedding cake and wanted Italian ice for later in the evening to cool everyone off from dancing. It was also wonderful as a dairy-free alternative sweet. A lot of our guests are lactose intolerant and we, ourselves, did not want a heavy late-night dessert. It was so refreshing and such a fun part of our wedding. We chose watermelon, sugar-free lemon, pineapple, and peanut butter. All perfect flavors but the watermelon was a surprising hit (and great combined with the lemon or pineapple). I love this place! I never like to walk part without grabbing a peanut butter ice. So creamy and delicious! We have seen this place at DPAC, food truck rodeos, and even just the Farmer's Market. The scooper is always super friendly, and the line moves quick. They'll even give you a taste, if you're unsure which flavor to choose. I stumbled upon the SweetWater New York Ice stand in downtown Raleigh on a sunny Monday afternoon (yes it was a few weeks ago). It was hot, and I had about a mile to go to get home, so I decided to pick up a sweet treat for the trek. And I'm glad I did! As the previous reviewer said, there are two sizes, a small for $2 and a large for $3, making it a good deal compared to other desserts/sweets. The owner was nice and chatty. You could tell he was passionate about his small business and thought his product was really worth buying (and it was, so no complaints there). I am not a huge New York/Italian/Water Ice person (don't get me wrong, I like it, but it's not something that I go out of my way for), but this was wonderful--it was so smooth rather than feeling like eating a gritty snow cone and fresh rather than tasting like the artificial snow cone flavors you find at the beach stands (the kind with huge syrupy containers). I ordered a small cup of half watermelon and half cherry and I'd highly recommend those flavors, if you like the respective fruits! read more

I absolutely cannot recommend Sweetwater Ices enough. 6 stars! I found them at a bridal expo and booked them for my wedding almost as soon as I got home, even before my husband got to try it! I picked four flavors just based off of the list I was sent. Later, we had a tasting, and I completely changed the menu because it was ALL. SO. GOOD. Michael mentioned the combinations of certain flavors, which I hadn't even thought of doing, and overall Michael is just amazing at what he does. Not only does he have a great product, he was also chatting up guests at his cart and making everyone laugh! Trust him and you will not go wrong. My wedding guests could not stop raving about his treats, everyone from the 10 month olds to the 92 year old loved Sweetwater Ices. Best Italian ice I've ever had. I sampled the mango, well, I guess technically it was a full serving but it was so good I scarfed it down like it was sample size, and it was amazing. A lot of Italian ice treats are a little hard on the ice and soft on the flavor and this was the exact opposite. The ice was soft and the flavor was off the charts. If you see the cart around this summer stop and grab a serving or you'll regret missing out when you do get around to trying some. read more

We used sweet water ices on our wedding day in the beginning of June. I first discovered them at a forever bridal show and fell in love with their Italian ice- it's sooooo good. I figured what better to serve on a hot, NC summer day? It had been raining all week leading up to our wedding day and then on Friday the rain decided to clear and temperatures sky rocked to the 90's, so the Italian ice was more than a hit! Their bike bar and bow-tied getup is beyond adorable. It's caught my eye in a number of places - DPAC, downtown Raleigh, and most recently, the Durham food truck rodeo. With temps approaching 90, all the rumbling generators, hot pretzels, baked potatoes, pork bbq, etc. at other food trucks seemed unappealing. I jumped in line for a refreshing Italian ice. My only previous experience with this was from childhood, courtesy of my mom and the frozen food section of Food Lion. This Italian ice made that seem as quality as a Kmart Icee. My spoon skimmed the top layer -- texture that's both frosty and smooth. Lemon flavor that's the perfect balance of sweet and tart. And priced fairly at $2 for a size small, that's the perfect size. They have other flavors, and offer samples as well. I asked them where they hang out these days, and he said catered events have been keeping them busy. Good for them; but I hope that doesn't mean I won't happen upon them and their treats ever again! read more
