You will have a whole family of returned customers whenever we're in town because the older gentleman working was just the sweetest and their icecream was delish! We've had Taiyaki/Bungeoppang with icecream before, so we were expecting red bean inside but it's just the pastry itself, no complaints but I also love the sweet red bean too. They have a lot of variations of how you can make your combo, I truly liked the rice mochi topping the most. I had the ube and blueberry icecream with fruity pebble toppings. I did not realize what a combo this was until that day! My kiddos also enjoyed theirs, zero complaints. We did come at a very busy time, so the tables and sitting area weren't the cleanest but given the zero downtime they had between customers I'd give them grace. SugarKoi remains one of my favorite ice cream shops in the triangle (might be THE favorite anywhere really)! I always get one or more flavors of Nat's Asian ice cream / sorbets with a koiyaki which is made fresh in-house. He does rotate through flavors regularly so I recommend following SugarKoi on Instagram for the new flavor drops. They also have pints you can bring home! Stopped in for a milkshake. Put the milkshake ordering to the side for a minute because I was so blown away by all the options of flavors that they had for ice creams, which also can be choices for milkshake flavors. Nat allowed me to try many flavors, all of which were delicious and unique! They were all very much true to taste with the description of each. It made the decision hard of what flavor to choose! I ended up choosing the purple yam flavor and then decided to also get a key lime pie milkshake for a dessert at a later point in time too. Upon checkout, I saw he had some baked goodies that they actually make in their own kitchen. They also have unique bottled drinks you can purchase. At this point, I then realized that there were more specialty drinks and they had holiday flavored specials. I ended up getting a toasted marshmallow latte as well. It was so good. The current price is $8. The flavors switch every so often. I can't wait to see the next line up. They have plenty of parking. This is a cute ice cream shop and have to give props to Nat because I have been a longtime customer when he was at Sushi Thai. I saw that Sugar Koi received the best ice cream award recently so my son and I had to check it out. They make their own homemade Asian-inspired flavors like ube sweet potato, Thai tea, matcha green tea etc. Then the other flavors are all more traditional and from Hershey premium. I saw cute fish cones and beautiful scoops and ice cream options. We had banana pudding and strawberry fields in cups. There is indoor and outdoor seating and there is artwork to purchase from local artists adorning the walls. Service was great and customer-friendly. Next time I will try the homemade flavors. I am so happy that this place moved from Durham to Cary because it is closer to me, parking is better and it's much bigger inside. They have cute merchandises as well. What about ice cream? They have different options and every flavours are marked for specific food allergens. Makes it easier to order. If you want to look what ingredients they contain, some ice creams are Hershey Premium. The more exotic flavours like Mango, coconut, matcha green tea, ube, Thai tea, Earl Grey, they are made by a different company. If you get the Koiyaki, the fish waffle is made in house. They are nice and warm before it gets added to the ice cream. Decorated with topping you want with whipped cream to boot. I love the merchandises! I even got one for my little. Last thing, the owner is the one who serves you. If you have a big crowd and he is by himself, be patient be is doing a great job. I like their variety of ice cream flavors, especially Asian-style flavors, and their Koiyaki is delicious! I came with my family, and my daughters ordered Cotton Candy and Ube ice cream, and my wife and I shared a Koiyaki with Ube and Earl Grey ice cream. I liked both the Ube and Earl Grey, although I'll say I preferred the Earl Grey by a smidge. The Koiyaki comes with 2 scoops (and up to 2 flavors), a choice of sprinkles and other toppings (we got the mochi and Pocky, but you can also get a wafer roll cookie). The Koiyaki cone also had really nice texture - a slight crisp on the outside, but chewy and soft on the inside. Great combo! Cary, NC has all of the greatest places and Sugar Koi is added to that list. The staff at Sugar Koi are super friendly and helpful. They offered a free sample (which of course, I accepted) before ordering. My husband and I both went with the Koiyaki icecream and were more than happy with our decision. I ordered the matcha green tea and Thai tea scoops, chocolate sprinkles, pocky, and mini mochi. Everything tasted great and the koiyaki was fresh and warm. The novelty of this place is great for a one time visit...but the flavors will bring you back time and time again. I can't wait to come back and get more! So glad to see that we finally have taiyaki in Cary!! This is a brand new location in the Big Lots strip mall on Kildare Farm Rd in Cary so lots of parking available. When we got there at 8pm, there was a pretty good sized line which kept growing. It was obvious that they were still working out the kinks since they ran out of the taiyaki & was trying to bake more to keep up with demand. Ice cream - Glad to see Asian flavors like azuki, matcha, goma, I've etc...You can get chocolate & vanilla anywhere so it's nice to see that's variations. It was apparent that this was a higher butterfat ice cream but it was a bit too sweet imho. Koiyaki - Love the concept but i thought there were too many variations for the staff to ask which slowed down the line. Choose 2 flavors then do you want whipped cream? What type sprinkles? Do you want mini marshmallows, mochis or pocky? Minimize the choices and the lines would flow better and it would be less confusing for the staff. Other than that this is a great concept and love to see an independent business rather than a chain. I'm sure they'll do extremely well once the word gets out. read more

Great place! I am so glad they are in Cary now. This place is so yummy and the staff is so sweet. When I went the softserve machine was under repair but the normal icecream was still great. Omg! This ice cream shop is my favorite! I wish I lived in Cary so I could try the new, house made delicious flavors each week. My son and I both ordered a Koiyaki (fish cone) with two scoops and two additions. I ordered a Koiyaki with a scoop of Ube (sweet purple yam) and scoop of Hojicha (roasted green tea), sprinkles, mini mochi, wafer. The koi funnel cake topper is adorable and so very delicious. This green tea ice cream is so good. I could really taste the dark roasted tea and the Ube ice cream was very subtle so the two went well together. Next week, the Hojicha is being replaced with Earl Gray Tea. The Lychee will be replaced with Japanese Lemon sorbet. I'm just sayin I'm going to be back next week for sure. I saw a photo of the fish waffle and it reminded me of a dessert from Tokyo Japan so I had to go try it. Location: The place was a little hard to find due to construction and also it's inside a building at Brightleaf Square. If you're having trouble finding it, look for Clouds Brewing - Brightleaf Square and the entrance it's literally in front of it. There's a small free parking lot there. How to order: First you choose if you want the fish waffle cone, regular waffle cone or bowl. Then you choose what ice cream flavor you want (up to 2 flavors). Then choose what sprinkles you want and then choose your decoration: pocky stick, mini mochi, marshmallow, m&ms or pirouette wafer. I chose the fish cone, strawberry ice cream and raspberry sorbet, colorful sprinkles. mini mochi and a marshmallow. The raspberry sorbet didn't go very well with the other stuff so I won't mix flavors again but the rest was very good. My husband chose the sweet purple yam flavor and m&ms and he loved it. I wish they had red beans flavor like in Japan though. It's a cute spot for Instagram photos but the dessert is also delicious! I decided to try one scoop and I'm glad I did because it was a generous portion. I was expecting the fish to be crunchy like a cone but it actually tastes like a waffle!
