Now this is a unique "park" where it's not easy just to find where the trail begins. BUT once we…read morelearned why it's called 'Explore' Park, our first visit here became absolutely engrossing. After turning into Roanoke River Parkway from Blue Ridge Parkway, drive past several lookouts and the park entrance. Keep driving past Arthur Taubman Center on your left and down a gravel road where you'll eventually find the parking lot for the 'explore' part of this park. At least two entrances exist, and it doesn't matter which one you start on since the trails meet, crisscross, and loop. Just watch out for signs along the way. I like that it's a trail in a natural setting with lots of trees, but what really makes this park unique is the endless stone and wood structures and buildings you come across randomly throughout the trail. It was actually so bizarre and mysterious that I didn't even think to take any pictures. There's a house that used to be a family home but is now empty, and you can take a peek inside since all the structures are inaccessible to visitors. We came on a weekday, and the only other people we saw were kids in the parking lot and a person walking their dog. Okay, slightly spooky this place, but I wouldn't want it any other way...well, maybe if we could walk inside the buildings it'd be even more fun.

It was very convenient to go from the rooms to the reception without ever leaving the building! The suites were spacious, clean, & well-appointed, with comfortable beds & nice linens. The sofa beds were made up as requested, with a bottle of anniversary champagne for our son & daughter-in-law. We had also asked for a microwave (not standard in the hotel), but we did not get one. We had 5 grandchildren who really wanted a popcorn party after a brief appearance at the wedding reception, so I was a bit disappointed. However, before we returned to the room with the children, a microwave had arrived with a kind note from Gloria (Guest Services Manager)...she had gone to a store & purchased a microwave for our use! Talk about great customer service! And on that note, my multiple email and phone conversations with Madelyn & Candace (Guest Services) were absolutely of the highest caliber of customer service I have ever experienced! They were always so polite, friendly, professional, and beyond helpful...no matter how many questions I asked! I cannot remember who I asked about breakfast (sorry ladies), but one of these 2 awesome employees arranged for complimentary coffee & pastries for all of us who were visiting for the wedding, as the restaurant had just opened that week, but was closed the Monday morning after the wedding. Madelyn & Gloria were both very helpful with issues after I booked & cancelled through Expedia, then reserved directly through the hotel for a better rate. One final note-it was super cool how the old bank had been transformed & repurposed into this wonderful space, and the kids loved exploring & checking out the vaults! She gave us the history of the area which allowed us to treasure our visits to the museums in town. It has made a valiant attempt to rebrand itself as LYH. That trip back down memory lane of the struggles endured by the growing pains of our people, our country, our self-worth made us appreciate from whence we have come. And while I'm not very tall, I could readily see someone who typically struggles with standard-height shower heads appreciating (if not loving) the rain shower. Owner and host Bonnie was fantastic. She went out of her way to accommodate our breakfast and lodging needs and wants. (Please be sure to tell her not just of any food allergies but also of any strong food preferences so that you can thoroughly enjoy breakfast.) She makes it a point to use organic ingredients, and there's plenty to eat. (I had so much to eat during the first breakfast that I skipped my lunch and almost could have skipped dinner.)
