(This review focuses on Saint Peter's Church; part two of my assessment falls under "Lenox Hill Neighborhood House.") The church is attached to the Citicorp Building. Enter on East 54th Street and take the steps or elevator down a level. The first time there, I was blown away by the number of people gathered in the main area. (It's a good thing when residents access community resources.) There are discussion groups, various exercise classes and miscellaneous programs, ie opera appreciation, mah jong, karaoke. The calendar changes monthly. They offer a healthful farm-to-table lunch, served weekdays at noon for $1.50. To sign up, bring proof of NYC residency and age -- you have to be at least sixty -- to their facility on East 70th Street. You might call to find out if you can register at the church -- the number is 646/306-4492 -- but once you're in the system you can participate in programs at both locations. We came there when it was about to rain so it was not sunny the entire time, it started pouring just as we were leaving.. which made for a super beautiful view of the sky, with sun rays shining through. There are TONS of bushes with different fruits there, which I did not expect.. and also a TON of glass in the sand which is horrible, so BE CAREFUL! There are also spiky plants in the sand as well that hurt if you step on them so at least wear slippers. If you come there with your bike, just know you will have to climb around to get to the beach area. Tons of people windsurfing there which was a pretty cool thing to watch, them being raised up into the air and falling into the water. The view is gorgeous there as well so I naturally had to take tons of photos. There generally ARE people there and you will see them pass by but you can find spots where you are out of view if you want to sunbathe there. Overall a nice little spot to stop by every once in a while while biking by the belt.

I was seriously impressed with the cleanliness of the entrance, pool, and locker rooms (I'm from Brooklyn so I remember what the pool used to look like...that's another story). All personal items must be locked up. The rules by the Parks Department seems a bit archaic: The only items you can take to the pool area are a towel and flip flops(literally). Books and reading material are permitted. You must provide and use your own padlock. They suggest a combination lock. No Electronic equipment, including cell phones. Only white t-shirts are permitted in the water. The staff was professional and courteous. Instructors were eager to answer any questions we had, however I was disappointed because my son arrived for advanced swimming lessons and the children there were clearly not ready for advance swim lessons. The instructor said she had to give instructions based on the skill set of the group and that was basic 101. My son was bored and we gave up our coveted lottery spot to one of several children on the waiting list. I'm seriously unhappy with the instructions, but I blame that on the parents not the swim instructors. However the facility was impressive and squeaky clean.

They did not communicate professionally and started shouting at my group. After entering 3 times we gave up and left. Btw none of us ended up going inside the pool. Horrible experience for such a nice pool. Disgusting staff! Get tough professionally before hiring, please.

Bicycle Habitat

I had a very poor experience here…read more I brought in my bike for a front shifting issue and was charged for derailleur adjustment twice, but the real issue was not identified. Multiple mechanics suggested I might not know how to shift properly, but the actual problem turned out to be a bent chainring. That was only discovered after I went back multiple times and pushed for them to keep looking. It did not seem like the bike had been properly test ridden before I was told the issue was rider error. Communication was also difficult, and the overall attitude I experienced from staff felt passive aggressive rather than helpful. I was largely left on my own trying to sort out what was going on. They also replaced the wrong bolt on my saddle. When I asked about replacing the correct bolts, I was told they did not have the proper ones, and the issue was not properly resolved. After multiple visits, repeated charges, poor communication, and the real problem being missed until I pushed for further inspection, I would not return.

The staff acts like they're curating art at a gallery instead of fixing brakes. I asked about a repair and got a response like I interrupted a TED Talk on bicycle culture. Relax--it's a chain and two wheels. And the prices? I thought they were quoting me for a full bike rebuild, a documentary, and emotional support. Labor costs so high I expected my bike to come back with better credit than me. Same attitude both times--like I needed them more than they needed customers. It's a bike shop, not a fashion week afterparty. Nobody needs this level of arrogance over a tune-up. Plenty of other shops in NYC that will fix your bike and treat you like a human being. Start there.
