Ehh, interesting place. A quirky place to go a grab a sip if you are in the neighborhood though. We were the only people here when we went. Parts of the interior are pretty awesome - like the bar, and some of the other unique decor. But, there is definitely still a "strangeness" factor, which for me is partly the building and location. I imagine with a full house, this would be less obvious. I think they are trying though - and that is noteworthy. I'm definitely not a wine snob, but I didn't really enjoy the 'wine & popcorn' thing they had going on. (But, I'll watch Karate Kid without sound all day long!). The wine selection and prices were nice, and the service was friendly - but just a tad off (one of those things you just can't put your finger on). I have to update my 4 stars to a 5. I've been here several times now and keep coming back for more. Downtown South has needed a wine bar like this for a long time. What I love about Swirlery is that you can always anticipate an outstanding selection of wines... but without the stuffy ambiance and inflated prices of some other wine bars. It's a down-to-earth local hangout. Here, you can enjoy a serious tasting that showcases great wine regions. Or on other nights, you could sip fine wines while you watch a retro 80s film, sing karaoke or play Cards Against Humanity. Be sure to check their facebook page before you come, just so you have a better idea of what entertainment/activities the evening may deliver. Best of all, if you need help with your wine selections, you can just ask Melissa for her expert advice. She has a great palate and an extensive knowledge of wine. Swirly is a hidden gem. So glad they joined the neighborhood. It's a sweet little spot right on Michigan. Super convenient. The owners are friendly. And full of good advice for choosing and tasting wines. The place allows you to bring your own snacks or order cheese plates. Either way you can't go wrong for stop at this place. We dropped in on a Thursday afternoon. And Melissa gave us a taste of four different wines just to lead up to a delicious cab. The ambience is quaint and friendly and we were able to sit at the bar and chat while being served little cups of chocolate covered popcorn. If that doesn't put your smile on your face on a Thursday afternoon I don't know what will.! Can't wait to go back! read more

You've hung out with the crew for a bit, and you get invited to a small get together at this Somm friend's house. You get there, and it's decorated kinda funky, kinda simple, pretty much what you would expect how the home of an industry person might be. Then the hostess realizes you're the one wine "newbie" and runs over to you and spends the rest of the night with you. Sure, she chats with the rest of the folks at the party, and she should, they're all her best friends. But you, you're her new best friend. And she wants you to know everything about wine that she knows. And not once does it become pretentious. She wants you to know everything on your own terms. I have been passing by this establishment coming in and out of work for a few years. Well , tonight was the night!!!! Wow I've been blown away. Hospitality was awesome . Wine selection great. They went above and beyond to find a wine to accommodate two different palates. Everyone was super friendly . Ambience was quaint. Melissa was amazing. Our water and/or wine glass were never empty . 190/100 in 2016 challenge Love Love Love this place! Went here on a Wednesday night with a group of nine girls for a wine on Wednesday night. We were greeted by the owner who set us up right in the middle of the wine bar. Nicely decorated with grouds on the tables and fresh flowers in mason jars(nice touch). They had a special event going on as there was a wine maker from Argentina there to present hers wines with an incredibly interesting story as to how she and her family got started in the business. The special of the evening was 5 different wines for 10.00. Score!!!!. After the presentation we were treated to the Wednesday night movie event of Stand by me. Great old movie of yesteryear. They offer a different one on a weekly basis. They even allowed our event planner for the evening Stacy F to bring in snacks to go with our wine. Amazing!!!! Bathroom was also very clean and decorate with fresh flowers. A great girls nice for sure, in a great place. They also have a large selection of beers. I am sure we will be doing this again very soon. read more

It features several weekly events, great happy hours and a Wednesday night tasting that is exceptional! Here, wine is made approachable and enjoyable. I have been here a couple times for various events and it's always fun. The Swirlery is attractive and very clean on the interior. It also has a private parking lot. The owners work in the store and are happy to answer any questions you may have about wine. They don't serve food, but you're welcome to bring in your own! They are also very welcoming to groups (girls nights, bachelorette parties, etc.). Additionally, I see tons of couples and locals enjoying the events as well, so a wide variety of people attend. I especially enjoyed their selection of organic wines. It's fun to be able to taste such an eclectic collection in a relaxing environment. They also often host representatives from various wineries who are available to provide samples and answer questions. It's definitely a unique spot. Overall, this is a great venue and I highly recommend giving it a try. read more

Neat little wine bar with good selection, good atmosphere, and fun patrons (if I do say so myself)! Swirlery is in its soft opening phase, and is already looking like a winner. It was opened by a friend, who in recent years, has found her true passion in wine. When she is tending the bar, there will be varied and good conversation on all topics wine. Though there are good selections by the glass, I recommend getting a bottle, where there are excellent selections at quite reasonable prices. And remember that we can take partial bottles with us, so we can enjoy that, oh say 4th glass at home, without having to worry about surge pricing and next-day car pickup on the way to work. This place is so cool. Prior to coming here, I had only been on a few mini wine tastings at Busch Gardens, which were fun and worthwhile, but not as educational as I had hoped. At Swirlery, I learned more about wine in just three hours than I had ever known before. Every week, the owner has a mystery wine tasting event in which participants visually examine, smell and taste various wines and attempt to guess the specific vintage of wine. When I went, I was by far the least experienced there, but I did not feel awkward or out of place. In fact, all of the regular patrons made me feel quite at home in their 'Court of Master Sommeliers.' Overall, great experience. No other wine bars I've been to have been quite this good. I would highly recommend the tasting Tuesday nights. At just twenty dollars you can't go wrong. read more

I appreciate what this shop is going for. The neighborhood could definitely benefit from a cool place like this. But it has an awkward layout, the bartender (you'd think would have a great wine knowledge) could not make any suggestions. The biggest issue for me was time. I was in the neighborhood with friends and we know we wanted to try the place. I checked online and it was to open at 1:00- perfect it was 5 till. We went over and at 1:15 it was still closed, no answer at the door or on the phone. We ended up going back later the next day to ask, and the bartender informed us, "oh yeah I was running late yesterday- woops". Really? We had a decent group of wine thirsty patrons with us. at $9 a glass, you missed out buddy. I'd like to try one of their wine and popcorn nights (they have a projector screen for movies), but I may need a while to warm up to it again. read more

Came into the establishment with my group during their Valentine's day weekend event. There was a set menu with wine pairings. We came 10-15 minutes late and they had a table reserved for us and sat us, catching us up on their first course. Very grateful for their willingness to accommodate us. The music was very lively, current hits. The dishes and wine pairings were great and it had a great fun ambiance to the night. Their menu had a different type of protein in the dish per pairing and I thought it was very unique. I had to ask for refills of my water a few times, unfortunately, but I didn't let it get to me. The dessert was a chocolate cake with chocolate ganache which was the highlight of my meal (I love sweets!). Great place to relax and catch up with friends-- I'll be back. read more
