Our family camped here for the first time this past Labor Day weekend. It was a wonderful weekend of relaxing and bonding! We had 2 of the larger sites in order to accommodate all of us. The weather was nice. A bit chilly at night dipping into the 50's. I'm glad we brought 2 warm blankets and warm clothes for sleeping. During the day, it was very comfortable staying in the high 70's to low 80's. This campground offers the best of both worlds...it's woodsy and shaded with trails that lead you into the hills with beautiful views and creek crossings, yet you have access to the beach at Sycamore Cove within walking distance. You can hear the soothing ocean waves at night and the frogs from the creek. The Nature Center is a bonus! It's volunteer run and open on Saturdays from noon to 3 PM. It has taxidermic examples of the animals native to the area. While we were there, we had a new moon, so it was really dark at night. That just made it easier to see all the beautiful stars while sitting next to the campfire. There are token operated hot showers available, and the bathrooms were well maintained. We'll definitely be returning!

We came as a group to camp, enjoy nature, and the beach. The facility was very reasonable priced and campground and restrooms well maintained. The beach is right across the street and great hiking trails close by. We loved it here and will definitely be back!!

March 14-17, 2024 Location: Beautiful (right across HWY 1 is the beach) Campsite: RV, Trailer, Tent loop. Small sites. Only one tent per site on average. Nice and green. Table bench and fire ring. Campsites are pretty much on top of each other. Showers: Never got warm let alone hot. The directions for the shower did not help Camp Host: More like firewood salesman. At 10:00pm the generators are supposed to be shut off and "quiet time." No host to be seen. Generators going until passed 11:30pm. A couple campsites were loud way past midnight. Not one drive by during the day or night to check the grounds. Hiking Trails: Damn awesome

Sycamore State Park Campground had campsites at both the Sycamore Cove and Sycamore Canyon grounds in Point Mugu State Park. I stayed at the Sycamore Canyon Campground from the 15th to the 16th of July 2018 as part of a three night, four day road trip through part of California. The campground was packed and had a number of large groups. At night there was a fair amount of noise. There were also musicians that took up to playing during the day. One of the perks of this campground when we stayed was running water and showers! Didn't get that at all of the places we stayed so it was nice to get a shower in one day. There were token dispensers where you could buy tokens for use in the showers. Depending on the building you take your shower, you may or may not get warm water. The building where I took my shower had only cold water. Good for saving electricity and being environmentally friendly.

Such a wonderful campground tucked away next to the beach. This was our first time camping experience with my kids, and we were here during the President's weekend holiday. This is not your typical camping site one would typically experience. I would have to say it is much more of a GLAM-PING experience rather your hardcore CAMPING expectations. Pros: 1. The campground has "Hot" water showers with the purchase of tokens. 2. Clean toilets maintained daily. 3. Access to the beach is walking distance away 4. Excellent hiking experience and mountain biking trails 5. Every campsite comes with a firepit and two parking space 6. Pet-friendly Cons: 1. Reservation is hard to obtain; it takes about six months to get a spot. The state needs to figure out a better system to make reservations. If you are looking for a nice introduction to camping, I would have to say this is the place to be. Beautiful scenery, stargazing at nights, hiking, swimming, cooking in the outdoors, and having fun with nature. You can not go wrong with Sycamore Canyon Campground.

Dogs are allowed on the beach.

Overall, it was a really nice campground. Lots of shady sites and a wide variety of sites. Trailheads in the campground and the beach is right across the highway. Beach access could be safer though.

Very little privacy at Campsite 2

This is an old campground with outdated bathroom and shower facilities. Gate closes at 10 PM SHARP! Poisen oak and poisen ivy everywhere when hiking on all trails. Safe bet is just chill at the beach across the street and watch the lifegaurds train to be lifegaurds. The surf is turbulent here. Whales, seals, dolphins, and sharks pass along the shoreline. Watch these sea creatures as they pass by . . . Campsites range in size from miniscule to very spacious. TV shows such as Summerland filmed here. Car commercials use the PCH 1 road for TV advertisements

April 2017. Wildflowers! Just steps away from our campsite.

Our favorite. Small, quiet, plenty of hiking trails and the fire road goes on forever to walk or bike on. The ocean is steps away. It's cheap, has flush toilets and hot showers. I'm surprised at the few poor reviews, better for me, less people when I'm there!

Families were out with kids, a few people were doing yoga, and everyone just seemed relaxed. It has that mellow Malibu vibe without being pretentious. Parking can get a bit tight during peak times, but it's manageable. And even when it's busy, it never feels overcrowded because the space is so open. It's a loop hike, and we preferred doing it clockwise. This way, the climb felt more gradual at first and gave us those rewarding canyon-top views with the canyon on one side and the ocean on the other. There's also a little waterfall and a lively stream running through the trail (we went in July, and the water was still flowing nicely). Be prepared--the ascent can be quite steep in parts, but the payoff at the top makes it all worth it. Facilities are only available at the trailhead, so plan accordingly. Dogs are allowed, but they should be kept on a leash. Parking is a bit tricky. The lot only seems to hold about 30 ish cars. I would say on the moderate / hard side.

The creek, little waterfalls (especially after rain), and the ruins tucked into the canyon make the walk interesting without feeling crowded or overwhelming. What I love most is how peaceful it feels. You get ocean air drifting in, birds everywhere, and just enough shade to make it comfortable even on warmer days. It's perfect for a relaxed hike, a slow morning walk, or taking out-of-town friends who want something scenic without a hardcore climb. We tried to stop somewhere in LA that looks cool, but there was no parking and waaaaay too many people to leave our car packed with luggage. So I hopped on Yelp to find a new spot that looked away from the city, and this was perfect. It was quiet and beautiful, and its simplicity was very engaging for my kids 5-8years. My husband walked on the paths for a bit and I enjoyed a spot in the sunshine as the majority of the park was shady and a bit chilly! The park and trail is tucked into a neighborhood. The only thing confusing to me was the parking lot. There was two marked spots--one for handicapped and one next to it which said 'no parking' on the ground but there was no sign on the wall in front of the spot. It seemed odd and unnecessary. Why can't people park here in the only other marked spot? Is this parking lot only for people with handicaps? Where is anyone else supposed to park--the curb on the other side that's not marked and not deep enough to be out of the way of someone backing out of the handicapped spot? Other than that, and the dirty bathroom which had what looked like a poop smear on the floor and a pile of liners and crumpled TP blocking the bowl of the women's toilet, this was a great spot to be.

We've all heard of PTSD…read more... You know, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. But have you heard of PDSB?? (I'll break this one down in a bit) Well, if you've read any of my other reviews of the picturesque beaches in Southern California, your PTSD of "here we go again, another review about white sandy beaches, moderate temp. waters and picture perfect sunsets" by Lance L. just might kick in. But bear with me, because this review, you're definitely not gonna want to skip. So what is PDSB you ask? Well Point Dume State Beach of course! Yes, one of Malibu's finest & for good reason too! Sure, when everyone thinks about beaches in Malibu... For those with families, It's usually Zuma Beach, but that's where EVERYBODY goes and because of this, it's ALWAYS packed! And of course, there's where all the surfers go.... Surfrider Beach, hence the name! But Surfrider is for hangin' 10 and you just might get a big stare down by the locals. But Point Dume State Beach or PDSB as I know you will now refer to it is about to be your new favorite. Here's why: A pay lot which sounds like it sucks to have to pay just to go to the beach, but the minimal cost ($6-$15 depending the season) is worth it. The lot is literally parallel to the beach and once you park, you are right on the sand! In addition, Point Dume State Beach, although smaller than Zuma is pretty decent because it's not as well known about so you will definitely find a place to plant that umbrella and set up your beach towel to watch the kids play, throw a football around or work on your tan lines. As far as Safety, Not only is lifeguard towers right on the sand, but a lifeguard headquarters office is also onsite, so if something goes south, help is very nearby. Point Dume State Beach does have fairly maintained, public restrooms that's are serviced regularly by the beaches and harbors maintenance team as well as a few porta-potties onsite for use. The beaches themselves are clean and do not have a lot of trash, debris or tar like some of the beaches that I've been to up North on the Ventura County Side (Oxnard & Ventura beaches). And the best part, some of the best sunsets you can catch on this part of the coastline. Besides the actual beach, you can actually hike from the beach side itself up the Point Dume hiking trail to get an even better view or jump off the cliff if you dare. But.... Please, Please, Just make sure you are a solid swimmer if you are a real swimmer thrill seeker as the water near the cliff is rocky and the currents are very unforgiving. There are always calls for service where Lifeguards, Firefighters and the Sheriff's department are on scene performing rescues, but unfortunately, sometimes are unsuccessful and people have tragically drowned. So maybe leave the Olympic style diving into the Big Blue to the pros. And now that you probably have actual PTSD from me telling you how you could actually die if you aren't careful.... Maybe just shake it off and get some PDSB instead and enjoy the Best of Malibu from the safety of your seat right on the sand! "Life's a Beach, Enjoy it!"

We parked on the PCH passed Malibu Seafood (watch where you park, cops are serious in this area, they were hunting to give tickets to people when we went!). We walked into Malibu Seafood parking lot, there is a sign and you start a hike. You can check various trails, we stayed on the main path, which is tight and there is vegetation on both sides, so long pants are important as is sunscreen and water due to lack of shade. There weren't too many people, the views are incredible, the Pacific ocean shines in the horizon and Malibu coastline is gorgeous. We saw a few hawks flying above. There's plenty of free parking and it's never been crowded. I have had some negative dog encounters here because it is so quiet people will sometimes bring less than fully socialized dogs here. So you have to be cautious and monitor your dog if they're not in the park alone. But that's any dog park. And as a dog owner, we owe it to our pups to monitor them. There's no cell phone service here at least for me with AT&T, but I do love the ocean views. It's really a great dog park. The picnic table is in the shade always helps us beat the heat. And although my dog doesn't jump over the little rails or going to the red tunnel, he loves that there's chaparral on the hill that he can go pee and sniff, and he loves all the trees in the park and the positioned rocks within the park. They're fun little obstacles for him and I to play hide and seek

Parking is mostly plentiful, especially early in the morning when I tend to arrive, the trails can be easy or they can be fairly aggressive, depending on your desires for the day, but on a clear day, you will get some spectacular views and some excellent exercise.

Reservation America guided us on exactly how…read moreto reserve our spot but upon arrival the rangers said it was not possible and that reservation America does not know how they work, and ive seen many similar problems in multiple other reviews as well. My question is if they know about this major disconnect in communication between the two that is so bad that it's affecting customer reservations then why have they not fixed it at all? In regards to service it was horrible as the ranger Graceyn was extremely rude even laughing at our predicament and saying we were lying about our reservation, it was hard to even begin talking to her as before anything she didn't want to even talk to us and had to be convinced by another ranger to talk to us which was very weird behavior? I've never experienced such ungrounded rudeness before to the point where the other ranger seemed almost apologetic in the stead of Graceyn's behavior. I understand everyone has a bad day or long shift but this was beyond that so i highly do not recommend this place for the horrible communication and service experience. Very disappointing with the whole predicament but silver lining, we were able to transfer to another campground which was the best part of the service there so i'm thankful we at least were able to get that.
