Crumby. (Not necessarily in a bad way!) By lunchtime the floor is full of crumbs from breakfasters. This is a problem because I have a service dog that is a terrible scavenger. It's not that the crumbs are bad for him but that he has a hard time staying put with all the temptation around him. Otherwise this is a great little small-town cafe in the North Woods, and there are no negatives to be said about its service or its cuisine. It's packed on Sunday mornings when church lets out. The waitstaff is so busy that it doesn't seem to have time to sweep up the crumbs. I always try to go after the rush hours. read more

Syl's is an annual stop for us on vacation from Indiana so we can stop and get a pasty. I got the regular size pasty with coleslaw. The coleslaw is nice and creamy and the pasty was so big I couldn't finish it all. Next time I'll get the mini pasty. Also got a piece of pie and an apple danish for the road. They were delicious. Went here while visiting the porcupine hills with my wife. The town is absolutely charming, as is Syl's. The waitress we had was seriously the best, and the food was great. I had the double bacon cheeseburger with beer battered fries and my wife had the chicken strips with sweet potato fries. The burgers there are fairly basic, but you can tell they are homemade.. they taste fresh and delicious. We also shared a strawberry shortcake and it was amazing, we would've licked the plate clean had it been socially acceptable. I eat at Syl's every time I am in town. I am from the Twin Cities, MN. I go up here for summer/fall vacations to hike in the porkies. The food is always so satisfying. The portions are huge! The best Pasties and Burgers i have ever eaten. Burgers are so juicy and pasties have that great taste. Service is so amazing though it took a little for the food to be prepared. My family is from Milwaukee and every year we go up to St.. Germain WI for vacation and one of the days we are up there we always go to upper Michigan one day to look at the waterfalls and go to the porcupine mountains and we always stop there for lunch. Ate here a couple times on a recent vacation. I love the breakfast. Definitely a step above a typical diner. Homemade hollandaise sauce for the skillets and fresh blueberry sauce for the blueberry pancakes are really nice touches. All the pastries in the cabinet up front look dangerous. Great pastries (the best thing there), Bellow average breakfast, be VERY careful of their sausage, off tasting, we were told it's the original recipe you either like it or don't. My family has been going to Syl's for pasties whenever we're in the UP for maybe 30 - 40 years - as long as I can remember. It has been a long time since the last trip up there and I was so looking forward to Syl's on this trip. We brought an electric cooler just so we could take back pasties to our family. We ordered the 16 pasties, and ordered some to eat there. We've never been treated badly in all the decades we've been going up until this time. The restaurant was less than a 1/4 full. But we waited and waited for service. We saw our two pasties up, but they seem to have forgotten that one person in our party ordered a hamburger, and it took forever to get it. After looking at our pasties for 15 minutes under the warming lights, she brought the pasties and said the burger wasn't done yet. And it had been at least half an hour! No apologies, explanations, or communication of any kind. I ordered an ice tea and it took very long for the drinks to get there. Weirdly, the waitress told me they had run out of lemons, and then later served another customer an iced tea with lemon. That just seemed inept, pointless and random. Sometimes orders get messed up, but there is no excuse for rudeness. read more

I guess I will start by wondering how this place has bamboozled 4 or 5 stars out of people? I ordered a chicken breast, yep a simple grilled chicken breast. It was a boneless chicken breast that came in 3 pieces and as dry as the Sahara. I seriously couldn't cut it! There was canned corn for the vegetable. I sent it back and got the special which was spaghetti. It was decent but I couldn't take my eyes off of the filthy floor which couldn't have been cleaned in weeks. Service was lacking, a couple of overwhelmed young ladies. We waited too long and I saw other patrons becoming very impatient as well. Never ever again. We generally found the UP towns to be lacking in good restaurants, if you don't want to eat at SubWay or McD's. Syl's seems to be the only game in town if your town is Ontanagan, but fortunately, it was a good choice for us. We had a couple of the pasties, and were delighted with the size and flavor. Came through town after visiting the Porkies. The place reminded me very much of a long-gone restaurant in my hometown since it still has that 70's vibe and atmosphere. Waitress was very friendly but service was a little slow. I got a meat lovers omelet with a generous portion of delicious hash browns. I didn't particularly like all of the American cheese on the omelet, but that is just my personal taste. Otherwise it was excellent. They also make their own bread and the toast tasted like it. Loaves are sold in the bakery area if you want to purchase some. The cinnamon roll french toast was fine but nothing special. The real star was my pie. There aren't many places that serve raspberry pie (my favorite flavor), so I always try and order it when I see it. This one was one of the best I've had. I could tell they used fresh raspberries instead of frozen like I often see. I was particularly impressed that there was no additional charge for pie a la mode with Jillbert's ice cream. If I'm up here again, I will be back. Syl's has been open 48 years for a good reason. read more

Pizza was great- daily made dough and cheese on it was great. Sour cream and chive fries were great- so crunchy, they clearly fry at the right temp here. I got the local food, pasty. The pasty outside was great. I did not care for the inside, but it was my first time trying that food. The food came fairly slowly. When we got there all tables were dirty, so we chose the least dirty. The check out stand/bakery area seemed dirty- we sat next to it. Maybe they were having an off day. Went to Syl's while camping at the porkies. Ate around 5pm on a Sunday. I ordered the daily special , ham, cheesy potatoes, and cor. my son ordered fried shrimp. My ham was dry, cheesy potatoes were almost burnt and dry, and my corn seemed as if it cooked all day and was really over cooked. My son's shrimp was burnt ans was obviously VanDeCamp;s frozen popcorn shrimp., and when i told my server about it , she told me that it always comes out that way. Server was awesome, but the food was awful !! . The Interior was typical up-north diner which Is part of the fun of going places like Syl's when in small towns.
