Sylvan Learning has been such a helpful support system for my daughter. We first came in because she was struggling with homework and reading comprehension. Sylvan started by doing a full assessment and then walked us through which program would best fit her needs. We began with homework help, but after seeing her results, we switched to their reading comprehension program. She now attends twice a week, and they focus on helping her understand what she reads--things like cause and effect, main ideas, and writing at a 5th‑grade level. One thing I really appreciate is that they even reached out to her school teacher to get a clearer picture of where she was academically, so everyone is working together. Since starting, my daughter has grown so much. She actually enjoys writing now and is slowly building more interest and confidence in reading. The small group setting works really well for her, and I love that Sylvan does monthly check‑ins with parents so we always know how she's progressing. Absolutely terrible. I had great hopes in this center to help my daughter. And it just comes down to that you can't trust this center. I will explain in detail. But in summary, I just had a terrible experience that cannot be justified in any situation. This is a true experience I had. First off, I saw the commercial on TV and went online. I got a call from Sylvan where they discussed what they do and to set up testing for my daughter. I asked about whether they had a guarantee because I recall something on TV there was a guarantee. I was told they did which made me feel that if at least they stand behind their center. Something like an additional 12 free hours if they do not progress within 36 hours I believe. Sounds great? Wait for it..... Printed out a coupon online and went down to test. Coupon indicated $25 savings in testing and $100 off in center. Sounds great??? Not quite, wait for it..... Spent $125 in testing (no $25 discount because representative said there was another coupon for that), and spoke to representative and asked questions. First of all, they don't tell you until you are there that testing can take 2 to 4 hours. Thank god we didn't have anything planned that Saturday morning. Daughter completed testing early. Good sign, but wait, the director is not in and we have to wait a week and a half to meet with her to get results. Ok, not a problem yet. But can you tell me how much the program is? Rep responds $41 an hour and approximately 30 to 40 hours are needed. That's about $1,600. WOW, sounds great to me. I can totally afford this I tell my wife and I tell the rep that they should market how affordable they are (Boy was I dumb). Wait for it.... Had meeting with director where she tells us that my daughter is way way behind and needs over 100 hours to bring her back to current level. 100 hours?! What happened to the 30 to 40 hours? And the cost ranges in price is now from $41 per hour if I pay everything up front ($4,100), to $52 hour if I pay monthly ($5,200). So the cost just increased from $1,600 to $5,200. What happened to the $41 an hour? Only if I pay everything up front do I get discount pricing (you buy blocks of hours like 80 hours)? Not what I was told. And if you pay everything up front to get the $41 an hour rate and cancel, pricing reverts back to the $52.00 hourly rate. So there is no real savings after all. And what happened to the $100 off? Oh sorry, I didn't see you had the coupon, it was in the back and should have been up front. HUH? BTW the coupon was either $25.00 off testing or $100.00 off the contract is what the Director stated (but not what the rep said when she said there was another coupon, another contradiction). I still haven't received any refund for the testing. And now the finale (biggest contradiction), there is no Sylvan Guarantee for beginner readers. Only academic reading. I wish the person on the phone told me that so I would not have wasted my time in testing. According to the Director, she did (SO I'M THE ONE THAT IS WRONG?). I do not agree. So pricing increased, more hours needed and no guarantee. In summary, there are too many errors, too many misunderstandings, too many contradictions of a learning center that is suppose to be well-educated and experienced to teach and train my daughter. What would they teach my daughter after this? It is ok to say one thing and do another. Bottom line, I believe that they need to encourage repeat customers. If they correct problems right away, there is no further need for them to tutor your child. They are way too expensive and I do not trust them. I understand that many have had a better experience. I think it is important to ask is what is the average time that a student stays in the Sylvan Learning Center program and if it has been an extensive period of time, WHY? I think it is more important to talk with your teacher beforehand. Yes, I understand that miracles cannot be achieve over night. But then again, are they really motivated to improve students at a fast or slow pace? At $52 an hour, I am not sure. read more

Enrolling my 7 year-old has been a great experience from start to finish. Everyone at this center is very welcoming and experienced. I was reluctant at first because trusting people with your children can be a tough decision but I'm very confident that everyone here knows how to help my daughter learn. My oldest son took his GRE test at Sylvan. (This is the test you take for graduate school.) At the end of the test, he filled in paperwork to have his scores sent to his chosen graduate schools. Since he was worried that they might not make it to the appropriate institutions in time, he asked the representative if someone could call him when the scores were sent to confirm that everything was okay. Well, long story short, not only did we NOT get a call from Sylvan, Sylvan only ever sent three of the four test scores! We had to pay $27 a pop to have the scores resent and expedited by Educational Testing Service. Sylvan was incredibly unhelpful and we never even received an apology or offer of assistance in fixing the situation. My impression of the facilities was also quite negative. They seem to rely mostly on one huge room that must get really chaotic with a full class of elementary students. Carpets are scuffed. Lights are dim, and the vibe, over all, is pretty grim. read more

They have always been flexible in accommodating around my busy work schedule. I believe so much in the program that I enrolled my daughter in second session for math and my younger daughter in reading! The token exchange for toys is a great tool that encourages learning! I was at my end of hope in wishing that my daughter would improve her grades and learning habits. But when she started attending Sylvan..she immediately loved it since day one.
