Almost all tutors are the same: teaching and answering questions, but Terry goes beyond that to give deeper explanations to questions and concepts, something I haven't seen in many tutors. The pace of lessons are tailored towards the student; if a faster pace is preferred he can do that, and he really excels in helping those who want to understand how and why everything works together. Very patient in explanations and works to make sure the student understands the concept. Not only that, but he stays up late helping students with math and answering questions past midnight. He cares about his students and I'll definitely miss his classes as I'm off to university. There are many math tutors, but Terry is the person you go to for an in-depth understanding of coursework. There are endless words to describe my time with Terry. I recall my very first lessons and the nervousness I encountered back in my early middle school days in Algebra I and Geometry. I'm never going to forget the first time that I met Terry. It was October 1st 2019 and I remember him taking me in as a student to squeeze into his schedule. It was then that I met one of the most passionate, dedicated, and responsible people at their job. Terry had helped my two sisters before in math and were critical to their success going forward at the top colleges. Terry 's teaching is immensely great. He analyzes the ins and outs of a certain math problem, gives examples of how to attack certain problems, and finally makes you realize that you fall into trap and shows you how to not fall into that trap for a math problem. I've managed to grow despite being advanced from a C+ from Geometry to now a consistent A in Honors Pre Calculus and AP Calculus BC as a sophomore (This is all hats off to Terry once again as I couldn't do any of this without him). I won't lie, at the beginning of my first lesson with Terry, I was unmotivated. After all, I'm a kid suffering through the consequences of a pandemic that has plagued the world for months upon months. And it showed during my lesson. Terry quickly picked up on this and started shifting towards basketball discussions to spark my mind and energize it back to learning about Pre-Calc. Why do I tell you this? Because Terry Liu is one of the only people who believed in me when I didn't. For most of my academic career, I cruised through various obstacles like they were cardboard and I was a monster truck. That is until everyone came out of quarantine because that was when I slammed into a brick wall taller than ever imaginable. It was terrible. I was unmotivated, not really wanting to study, and, ultimately, wanted to go socialize with people over focusing on my academic studies. Terry is the nicest, most knowledgable tutor I've ever had in my entire life. We come all the way from Yorba Linda which takes about 25-30 minutes and it's definitely worth the drive. We don't have any tutors in YL that even compare to Terry for how well he teaches you and makes sure you understand every concept in an easy-to-remember way. He's always so helpful with all the questions I have and he'll slowly explain each problem until I understand it. I've only had about 3 tutoring sessions with him, the first time I went in there not knowing any of the concepts and when the session was over, I was so confident about the whole chapter that I was ready to ace the chapter test the next day! (**Long post alert) I started with Terry the summer before my senior year ('17-'18) - a bit late, I know, but he impacted me in ways I didn't think a math tutor could. First things first: With his help, I raised my SAT math score from 670 to 790 in September, as well as finished my high school career strong w/ A's both semesters in AP Calc BC. I wouldn't have seen those results without a tutor like him. But people need to understand what it took for us to get there. Terry has a people-first approach to teaching, meaning that in addition to helping us understand the material, he makes sure we're always in the mood to learn. Whether it's asking us how we're doing outside of school, or providing snacks here and there, he always finds a way to make it easier to absorb the material. There's a reason why this is so important. High school burnout is real. I still had a ton of AP classes and extracurriculars senior year, and normally, the last thing I'd have wanted on a weekday night is to drag myself over to someone's place for more math. But somehow, when Wednesday nights rolled around, I found myself actually motivated go get math help from Terry. It's not hard to tell why. He's friendly, patient, and extremely dedicated. When I didn't understand a concept, he would do everything he could to help, even if it meant going a little over our time (when there wasn't another student after me, of course), or answering my questions over text. I've had Terry for Trig, Calc 1, and I have him for Calc 2 right now. He's super helpful and genuinely cares. He doesn't just teach the lesson and cares whether you get it or not. Terry is also very selfless. He could be teaching a small group of kids each hour and be making double, triple, and even quadruple the money that he's making now, but because he wants to make sure that he gives each of his students his full attention, he chose to do one on one tutoring. When I had Trig my sophomore year, I was really struggling with it because I had a very bad teacher. My friend recommended me to go to Terry for tutoring and I decided to try it out. I saw improvement in my grade and my understanding of Trig almost immediately because Terry really knows his math and what he's talking about. During the end of the year, Trig got extra hard for me and Terry would offer me free sessions on the weekends so I could get extra help that I desperately needed. Because of him, I managed to pass that class with a B (most of the students in my Trig's class got Cs or failed). After my wonderful experience my sophomore year, I of course went back to Terry again for Calc 1. I took Calc 1 my junior year, which was a VERY tiring and hardcore year for me because I had to constantly stay up late to finish homework, so I would always fall asleep in my math class and miss most of the lesson that my teacher taught in class. However, I still understood each and every lesson because of Terry and his awesome teaching techniques. With Terry, I understood what the lesson was about and how to do the problems correctly. For the first time ever this year, Terry is tutoring Calc 2, and I of course went back to him again because of my insecurity about math and my good experience with him as my tutor. Even though Calc 2 is pretty much the same as Calc 1, it feels harder to me. Every time I go to Terry though, I always come out of the classroom understanding the material. He also makes milk tea and coffee! Terry's obsessed with coffee (just as he is obsessed with math!) and makes the best coffee! (I don't drink coffee because like it but I heard from my friends that he makes really tasty coffee lol) Terry will help you even after class! If you're stuck on a problem at home, you can just message him on Facebook and he'll usually help you after 10 because that's when his last class ends. Terry's super easy to talk to! I can be myself around him and ask him about everyday things and his opinions on things. Terry, hands down, is literally THE most dedicated tutor I have ever met. It's one thing to do your job for money, but it's another to do it for the love of doing it. Well, what can I say? Terry's one of the best teachers I've ever had. And im not just saying that. Terry's Math Place is different from any other math clinic I have ever experienced not only because it provides an effective one-to-one teaching environment but also because the tutor is one of the best in the fields of teaching and mathematics. The one-to-one tutoring is organized in a flexible manner that meets the needs of students at every single session. If students need help understanding the lessons or homework assigned in a particular week, Terry will not only ensure the students leave with proficient knowledge of the material but even future lessons so that they are prepared for the next day. If students need more preparation for tests or final exams, Terry will find their weaknesses and create a plan for making sure the student is well-equipped for the assessment. Terry is not good at math. He is GREAT! Terry teaches effectively and efficiently, making sure every minute of the session is being used, no matter what level of math the student is enrolled in. Terry has been teaching students for a long time with a resume that makes him overqualified in many aspects. But despite all these things, the reason that makes this Math Place so effective is how genuine and passionate Terry is. Terry is the type of person to stay up throughout the night and wake up early in the morning just so you can have guided solutions to problems you need in order to take a test confidently the next day. He sacrifices so much for his students and goes beyond what teachers should do for their students. Weaknesses: Forewarning, his students may be hyper after sessions because of the overwhelming amount of snacks Terry provides for his students. That's it for weaknesses. The evidence of my own experiences along with the successes of all his students can attest to how effective Terry's tutoring is. I had personally worked with Terry in my most critical points of high school during my sophomore and junior years. I was not at all a good math student and I actually didn't want to go for my first visit because of how my mom had been forcing me to go. But I cannot be more grateful now to have had Terry as my tutor throughout high school. His tutoring improved my grades drastically and also allowed me to fully understand the material that was taught every single day of class. Terry was the reason I was able to attend my dream school, the United States Naval Academy, which had a supposed 7% rate of acceptance that year. And for that I will always be indebted to him for all the late nights and early mornings he sacrificed for me and my math performance during high school. Terry is one of the most qualified and distinguished math tutors in service. His teaching style is specifically tailored to your needs and to your pace. As his student of almost 5 years, it did not take long for me to recognize his relentless dedication and patience for his students. I started off in CC Math 7 (the lowest math in 7th grade) and with Terry's guidance, I jumped ahead 3 entire math courses from where I started. I transferred to Advanced Math 7, took Algebra 1 in the summer, and after a confident year of Geometry in 8th grade I was able to select a path in high school that allowed me to finish both Calculus AB and BC by my junior year. I would not have been able to score a 5 on my Calculus AB test without Terry, and I'm sure my BC score will prove to be nothing less of a 5. Terry is also extremely patient and considerate. You will clearly see his passion for his job and his unparalleled authenticity in just a few sessions. Terry has taught both me and my brother with a rigorous tenacity that has been transparent across all of our 5 years with him. As students, we have days where we lack focus or endurance because of a long day, but in the 5 years I have been with Terry, I cannot tell you one time where he was lacking in any way, regardless of the time or situation. I have recommended several of my friends to him and all of them have been absolutely grateful. Furthermore, here is what sets Terry apart from other tutors: he knows the math curriculum of the local high schools like the back of his hand(SPMS, CMS, SMS, DBHS, WHS, THS...etc). Not only does he have most of the AP test problems literally memorized with the exact year and section, but he can literally describe to you the personality of a random Diamond Bar High school teacher without ever having met them before. Terry is by far the most amazing Math tutor I've ever seen. He really cares about his students not like other tutoring places that are in the business for the money. With more than 16 years of tutoring experience under his belt, I'd say he probably had seen all the problems you could imagine (Obviously he started tutoring when he was 4 haha). He also write those really helpful worksheets and collects problems on each topic from so many different books. He also wrote his own guidelines/handouts on how to tackle certain problems in easy 1, 2, 3 steps. I believe he should actually write a book :D. Hand's down the best math tutor in the area. If you're looking for someone who is not only knowledgeable, but a master of all levels of math, Terry is the tutor for you! Terry is the most kind and genuine tutor I know. He doesn't tutor just for the money like other places. He does it because it is his passion! He is compassionate and deeply cares about every single one of his students. Terry doesn't hesitate to go the extra step to help his students out when they are in dire need. It's more of an extra mile really...he'll stay up to sometimes past midnight to help students before their tests by explaining how to do problems that he sends out via text message. He's always there for your student whenever in need. And the best thing is that Terry is always super cheerful and patient when it comes to teaching. I personally had a hard time understanding a lot of the material in Calculus, but Terry was always there to try to figure out new ways to help me. All I can say is that Terry will always be the Math-Master in my eyes and hopefully he'll be around for many years so he can help many students through their struggles in their math courses.
