Not many cake designs to choose from, but fortunately they had one that was exactly what we were looking for. It's a neighborhood bakery, so don't expect anything fancy. We had a most unique request and Sylvia's Bakery came through! My husband and I wanted a donut cake for our wedding cake and they created a tower of every kind of donut you could imagine! The bakery itself is a pretty standard, old school type of place, but Raoul and his crew can bake a hell of a donut. They also created a huge donut for the "top tier" and put our cake toppers on it. They delivered and set everything up with plenty of time and it looked great! Fabulous little bakery in Darien!! A hidden gem! The donuts are fresh, fresh, fresh!! The people are very friendly and personable! Upon going in last minute on the way to my parents I saw their sign for their hot cross buns which I love and you can only get this time of year! I ordered cupcakes for my sons 1st birthday party. The woman who I spoke to both times (not sure who it was) was helpful and even made great suggestions for the order. The cupcakes turned out fabulous and tasted wonderful. Several of our guests had asked where they were from. The only hiccup was that my husband came home with the order, only for us to realize we only had half the cupcakes, so he did have to make a 2nd trip. Greeted right away, very kind, and the woman helping me was kind to another employee that she was asking to put out more cherry turnovers or whatever it was. The last part is really important to me too - i wont spend my money at a business that doesnt respect their employees. Im wondering if there isnt one person that people had bad experiences with or that person was having a really crappy time in life then. Carrot cake slices i bought are good classic carrot cake. Chocoholics unite - I found our clubhouse! The chocolate chip coffee cake is the BEST. It has a lot of chocolate and is amazing. Be warned however, if you aren't a huge fan of chocolate - this is not for you. It is coffee cake with a thick layer of chocolate frosting on top. We have also had many other donuts and pastries from here. They are all very tasty, too. I don't know about their birthday cakes as I have not tried them before. read more

I would say the best cake ever. The Grandma was great. I went in a day before the good Friday and ordered Welcome party cake for my new born. They were able to accommodate me on their busy busy schedule. I had got lot of designs taken from internet and showed her i need something like that. and I said i need fondant everywhere. She explained me why its not good idea to have fondant and also its expensive. Then she showed me few cake toppers / toys , that will give the same effect with less price. I didn't have hope and i was telling my husband lets go other shop. but we didn't have choice as it was a busy season for all bakers. So i stick to this bakery. Then she took order asking all my needs on the cake. I told my kid loves Baloons and Numbers and other few items. she said she will do really nice job and dont worry. My DH went to pick up on sunday Easter day. They were waiting for him. One person( she was the designer for the cake) asked to clear our trunk. She strictly told, you cannot carry the cake on lap, it will spoil the design and you wont enjoy it. Then she gave the cake. When the cake arrived, I opened thinking how it will be. I was amused to see the cake and its design. It had baloons and numbers.. and there was one little baby who was shining. Lot of minute details are perfectly given. My guests liked the cake and they said they haven't seen cake like this before. I was so happy. I didn't want to cut the cake. I just want to keep that forever and watch it.. Lovely....i still feel that happiness whenever i think about that cake. Taste was good. Also the cupcake were designed well too. Im glad that i could give the best welcome to my son. Thanks Sylvia's. I ordered cupcakes for my daughter's bridal shower. I met with the baker, showed her my plan to use white cupcakes with white frosting in the shape of a bridal dress at the shower venue. We also decided on a 'rose' frosting swirl (and paid extra) instead of the usual frosting swirl so they looked more finished. When the cupcakes were picked up, they were PINK! I immediately called the bakery and was told to bring them back after trying to explain they needed to have white frosting. After bringing them back to the venue, it seemed they sliced off the cupcake tops to re-frost!!!! And all the cupcake wrappers were pulled off the cakes! How hard could an order for 36 white cupcakes with white frosting be???? BEWARE! read more

Run. Run fast. While the baked goods taste amazing it's not worth the amazingly poor customer service & nonexistent business ethics. I guess it really is true; you get what you pay for. I ordered a wedding cake & decided 9 months prior that I do not want to put up with this kind of service so I called to cancel & get a refund. They told me no refunds. The lady Maria who is the only person you can talk to if its wedding cake related even went as far to say that's how they make their money! Too bad their cancellation policy is posted on their web site. As long as its before 30 days of the wedding full refund less $50. I have filed a report with the Better Business Bureau & filed a complaint with the States Attorney General Office for fraudulent advertising. I left several messages that were never returned, I was told I would get a call back & that never happened, I called back to say I didn't get a call back & was told she forgot but she's call tomorrow & then she still didn't call. You do not want to trust your special day with people who run a business like this. I should've known when I set up the very first appointment how unprofessional they were & listened to the awful reviews on yahoo. I hope the states attorney tickets & fines them big time for deceptive practices!!! **UPDATE 12/28/10** Almost a year later from the first time I called to cancel & were still trying to get our money back from these thieves. We were granted a judgment in our favor at the DuPage County courthouse for a full refund plus court costs back in May & here we are year end & still they refuse to pay. The bakery we ended up with which should've been our first choice blew this rinky dink filth hole out of the water. Everyone commented on our cake. For what Sylvia's was going to charge us, we got another layer of cake for even less money. Check out Naples Bakery on 95th St in Evergreen park. Honest, family run. They even have a place to sit with you for an appointment & have cake samples ready. I'm telling you hand to God, these people are dishonest or may God strike me dead for lying. One star is too generous for this absolute dump of a business. I have no idea how they can call themselves a, let alone stay in, business with the way they treat their clients. Our wedding hall gave us Sylvia's contact info as part of our package. We made an appointment more than a week in advance and during the same phone call requested a tasting which was agreed to. The first employe we encountered had a huge attitude problem from the very moment we stepped in the door. She could not have acted less interested or have been more unprepared. She never introduced herself, didn't explain that the consultant was still on her way to work, and mumbled in response when we asked simple questions. The bakery was seemed very unclean. There was no sitting area to meet with clients other than a ramshackle patio set outside. And worst of all, the tasting which we had asked for was not prepared! Despite our initial reservations we patiently waited for their consultant, Maria, to arrive. As we were doing so another couple showed up. She had double booked the appointment time and after her arrival began tending to them before us! This is totally unacceptable. She instructed them to sit down at the table with us as if we were going to have a group consultation. At this point, we realized that they had no concern for customer service, so we literally stood up and walked away. As we were driving back home, the bakery called twice to let us know that Maria was now "finished" with the other couple and that she would have time to see us. My fiance explained to her that because of their rude attitude and the fact that they assumed were so busy that they had to double book our appointment with another couple that they didn't need our business and we would go elsewhere. Take my advice now and don't even go near this pit. They are one of the most unprofessional businesses I have ever encountered. read more

I came here on a whim this morning since it's the only bakery I know of that's open on Sundays. I was apprehensive because it's a small building crammed in between two other businesses in a strip mall off of Cass Avenue. Although it may not seem welcoming from the outside, I was pleasantly surprised when i entered. The bakery may not be modern or very organized, but the workers were friendly and quickly put me at ease. They offer an assortment of breads, buns, donuts, cupcakes, cakes, cannolis, cookies, pie slices, lemon bars, and so on. Being a first time customer I stuck to donuts and cookies. The cinnamon rolls are to die for- they come in both a glazed version and a sugared version, twisted or in the regular roll shape. The dough is a perfect consistency; easy to pull apart, but dense enough to be filling. After buying donuts, I moved onto the cookies. I got a small assortment of snickerdoodle, pinwheel, butter sprinkle, and almond crescents. The cookies did not live up to my expectations after eating the delicious donuts, but were average in general. The crescents were a bit too hard, and the butter cookies fell apart and crumbled very quickly. Before I checked out, the clerk saw me eyeing the cannolis and gave me one on the house to try. Definitely a bonus! Overall, the bakery was very good. It may have been small and cramped, but it made up for it with delicious treats and warm service. read more

Yesterday was Paczki Day. I looked forward to trying Sylvia's Bakery since they stated on website they are baking thru March 10th. They had a very good selection of flavors everything from coconut cream to oreo plus traditional flavors. Arrived around 1 pm or so hoping the morning crowd was gone. There was a small line, and moved quickly. I picked 4 different flavors cheese, blueberry, coconut cream, and boston creme. All the flavors were delicious, however, the actual paczkis tasted dry. I wasn't able to get there till about 10 min before they closed and fortunately they still had 2 flavors left. I bought the fresh strawberry and cheese paczkis and they were both delicious! My mom requested a cake from Sylvia's for her birthday, letting me know in advance her cakes were pretty pricey. But when mom tells you, you listen, so I called and ordered a half sheet cake and asked how much the cake would be and they told me $85. My sister picked up the cake and paid for it, we ate the cake, it was good, but nothing extraordinary and the decorations on the cake were pretty sad for such an expensive cake. My sister told me they charged her $110 for the cake when she picked it up, so I called and spoke to Diana who apologized and asked me to come in the next day to pick up a $20 refund. When I went into the bakery, I ended up speaking to a woman who said she was "da boss", unfortunately Diana was gone for the day. This woman proceeded to go through her stack of orders pointing out to me the prices of all the cakes (the prices she was showing me were all different for the same cake!) and refused to give me any kind of refund. I tried explaining to her what had happened, but she wasn't having any of it. I ultimately told her she would lose my business and she told me that was just fine, she had been in business for 30 years and didn't need me. If you use Yelp regularly, you will know that if there's smoke there's fire and I should have heeded the other negative reviews - unfortunately I didn't and it resulted in a bad experience - at least this wasn't my wedding cake! read more

I used to love this bakery but I am so upset over a cake I ordered. My brother wanted a carrot cake and so I asked if they could put balloons on top and a birthday message but I also asked will it still be cream cheese frosting. I was assured it would be. The total came to almost $40. When I got the cake home we were all very disappointed because it was frosted with buttercream frosting and cream cheese only in the middle. I called the next day and was told that's always how they do it. The woman in the phone was very rude and though I told her I was promised cream cheese she said it can't be fixed. I asked her if I scrape off the frosting and bring it in could she frost it cream cheese. She said no then I asked could she give me the frosting and I'll do it. She then said she would do it but charge me another $7. I was so insulted. I didn't take it back because I didn't think it was right to pay even more.
