The Hanover Crossing mall in Hanover has been in the midst of a major and much needed makeover for…read morethe last few years. The construction is nearing completion and has turned an old-fashioned mostly indoor mall of years past into a more modernized version of an outside shopping center with stores having their own buildings accessed from well manicured outdoor sidewalks with plenty of parking in the middle of it all. While not as charming as the Derby Street Shops which underwent a similar makeover about 15 years ago, but still nice and certainly much improved from the dated mess that was there previously. This latest L.L. Bean outpost has recently opened and I paid it a visit a few days ago. It is certainly big, bright and well-organized although of course not nearly as mammoth and wonderful as the original satellite store in Freeport Maine. But I am pleased to have this location so close by. As with everything everywhere prices have gone up on much of the tried and true L.L. Bean merchandise and products are no longer made in the USA. Most things it seems at L.L. Bean have been outsourced to China which continues to be a disappointment. I miss the days of the USA made products that could once be found here. But there are reasons still to shop at L.L. Bean. I am a decades long fan of their Ragg wool socks for example which I wear throughout the winter. They are very warm, comfortable and last a long time. I am also a big fan of their canvas tote bags and I cannot tell you how many of those I own. I keep at least 4 of them in my car at all times as they are the bags I bring with me to go to the supermarket and to the farmers market, etc. They are my beach and boat tote bags as well. They are sturdy, strong, can be machine washed and dried and they last for years. And they are fun to have monogrammed with initials or any word or phrase up to 10 characters. I also love the L.L. Bean H2O rain coat and H2O rain jacket I own which both have hoods and zip-out liners. These are so good at keeping me warm dry in the rain that I no longer use an umbrella (I hate umbrellas so this is a big win!). I am looking to get a new H2O rain jacket so when I am ready, I'm glad to be able to get it here. My husband just found very nice, warm pair of leather gloves here in a men's size XL. He is a big guy and has such trouble finding XL gloves with long enough fingers so this was good news. Nothing of course will meet the shopping experience and scope of the original Freeport Maine store but I am very happy to have this store nearby for easy access.

I've bought very good quality clothing here, especially nightwear and sweaters. Their cosmetics and fragrances department is really nice and there are always plenty of salespeople behind the counters to help you out if you want to try on a product. I've bought several items from this department and have never been disappointed with what I've bought. One of the last times I was here someone from management helped me out with a gift card that I was having trouble using. So the customer service here is great and I can always count on leaving the store happy. They always have their departments attractively set up. And the prices on the merchandise and displays are always very clear. This location is definitely worth visiting.

Bassy saved my wedding dress and my wedding day!…read more I had originally gone to another tailor recommended by the boutique where I purchased my strapless princess gown. Unfortunately, the work done at the other tailor's shop left my dress butchered. When I realized something was wrong with the original tailoring, it was two months before my wedding. I was distraught because I didn't think a new tailor would take me due to the limited time before my wedding and it being right before bridal and prom season. However, someone recommended I contact Bassy and I'm so grateful for their rec! Bassy listened to my concerns regarding my dress and what the other tailor had planned to do to it, advised me to take back my dress straight away, and booked me for an appointment ASAP. Within a week Bassy had me in her shop to assess all the damage that had been done by the previous tailor: (1) the hem was uneven by inches; (2) the train was lopsided; (3) the bustle was just a loop and a button that would be visible and unsecure; (4) the bodice was taken in so much that three people were needed to zip me up, which (5) left the zipper of my dress straining and puckering; (6) so much of the bust was trimmed away that my chest was exposed whenever I moved; and (7) they made a sash instead of the custom shawl I ordered for my ceremony. The worst part about the original tailoring work is that so much fabric was cut away there was barely any fabric left to correct the shoddy work. My dress was in really horrible shape and I knew I wouldn't be able to find or order another dress in time for my wedding. Despite the multiple problems with my dress, Bassy assured me she would find solutions for the above issues and she did! Bassy evened out the dress' hem by rehemming it and removing a portion of its petticoat to ensure it kissed the floor evenly. For the train, she adjusted it so it would be symmetrical and less oblong. It looked gorgeous trailing behind me as I walked down the aisle. The bodice was a tricky fix, but Bassy executed it perfectly! To expand the bodice, she needed extra fabric and found it within the seam allowance of the bodice's panels. She undid every panel, let out a little bit of fabric from each, and carefully stitched the bodice back up so that each panel was even and proportional. She was able to expand the bodice while also making it look like it hadn't been deconstructed. Bassy's work allowed me to properly breath while wearing my dress and my mother was able to zip me up by herself with no trouble! Bassy also created a custom shawl for me that looked like something Audrey Hepburn would wear! The attention to detail is so incredible! Bassy made the shawl so there was a slight curve in the front that elegantly hugs my collar bone. I love this shawl so much I plan to continue wearing it for special events. The most incredible fix Bassy made to my dress is the bust. I thought I'd have to wear my shawl the entire wedding. Instead, she came up with the incredible idea to build up the bust of my dress with additional fabric. The original bust had a cat eye neckline with draping across it. Bassy was able to expand the bust above my chest and next to my underarms to give me more coverage. She did this by building up fabric that mimics the original bustline's shape. The final result is beautiful! No one would ever know that the work Bassy did was not part of the dress' original design. I'm incredibly grateful for the amazing and transformative work Bassy did to my dress, her professionalism, her expert advice, and her direct and honest communication. She always set realistic expectations and provided alternative solutions that would not compromise the integrity of my dress or its overall style. Bassy is also just a lovely person to be around. I was really sad about the state my dress was left in by the previous tailor. With each visit to Bassy's (and she booked me for as many as needed to get my dress perfect), I felt better and more confident. Bassy saved my dress, my wedding, and my peace of mind. Bassy hemmed several pairs of pants, took in the waist on others, and completely altered a vintage dress for me. The dress needed extra room, and she expertly removed the belt and expanded the side seams so seamlessly that you would never be able to tell any alterations were made. The craftsmanship and attention to detail are absolutely unbelievable. Bassy is truly a talented artist, and her work speaks for itself. For about 45 years I've supported this store as a buyer and as a donor. The best buy - of my LIFE -…read morewas here, a camelhair winter coat, perfect size and $20! The employees who staff the intake area are just delightful, helping carry items to the donation area in the rear of the store from your car to the holding bins. I do a Swedish Death Cleansing about every 4 months, so I always have items piling up in the back seat of my car, waiting to go. Also, pro tip: if you're lucky to lose a little weight and your clothes are looser than normal, clean 'em up and donate! It makes it less likely that you'll creep back into that bigger size if they're gone and someone else is looking good! Inside, the store is bright, staffed well, the items are out to sell and if you don't see what you want today, go back tomorrow, and tomorrow, and tomorrow. New things are always to be found. And you'll feel pretty good for supporting a charity that actually benefits people in our local community.
