The owner (I think that's who it was) was at the desk in front of the store, and he spoke to several people who came in about books. Alabaster is the quintessential used bookshop. The prices vary, so I would do a perusal of the store before deciding what to get. I also appreciated how this small shop is organized. It was easy to find my way around and to see if this shop had any books I had been hoping to find. Especially if you live nearby and are a book lover, pop in and see if anything catches your eye!

The books prices range from $900 to $500,000 which is very cheap for a rare book. You are looking at quality books that nobody else has. Customer service is excellent and I was able to ask some questions. I was able to get their catalogue so hopefully will be ordering one of the rare books soon.

As I immersed myself in this captivating realm, I lost track of time as its showcase, elegance, and charm enveloped me into a sense of comfort. Nestled discreetly on Madison Avenue in the 50s, this rare bookstore is captures bibliophiles and history enthusiasts alike, as features first editions of Grimm's Fairy Tales, and "The Bishops Bible" along with the The Complete Works of Abraham Lincoln. The woman at the front desk was very friendly and quickly helped direct me to what I was looking for. While many of these books are on sale for thousands of dollars, the chance to glance at several rarities in person is a awe-inspiring experience. I cannot shake my enthusiasm for returning to Bauman for further exploration. This rare book store is truly a hidden gem and I encourage others to come here to appreciate some of the world's greatest works. :)

It is located on the lower level at Rockefeller Center, along with lots of other stores & great, casual places with delicious food ...all NEAR THIS WONDERFUL BOOK STORE. I buy my favorite Manhattan Diary Datebook. It's slim, has great info in it, such as phone numbers from city government, to hotels, stores, police precincts, zip codes AND phone area codes, subway maps, and much more. This year I also bought some wonderful magnets with great sayings on them. The SERVICE IS EXCELLENT HERE!!! I usually call to make sure they have the datebook in stock, and then I head over. And then I get some great food at one of the food places just steps from the POSMAN Book Store. You can also enjoy some Ben & Jerry's ICE CREAM at the scoop shop near the book store. This is a wonderful book store, with very nice, helpful staff and GREAT ITEMS FOR SALE. I would urge you to stop in and look aroundd--LOTS TO SEE HERE. Enjoy! You can take an escalator to the Lower Level. If you need an elevator just ask on the main floor when you enter the Rockefeller Center building. If you are on Fifth Ave near 50th street OR on Sixth Ave near 50th Street, you are very close, the building is between 5th and 6th Avenues. In fact this location do not carry any journals nor diaries, or even postcards remotely close for tourists. I would imagine they would have printed matter for tourist but none of postcards or greeting cards, due to the size of this retail space. The associates are callous and inattentive to my prescence or needs. Whatever happen to the ethics of customer service in 2012 era, did it gone down into the plaguing toilet like mannerism, respect, honesty, open positive communication, and sincerity?

But Mercer Street Books & Records is a place with heart and soul. While the Strand might have tons of new stuff, Mercer has some quirky, delightful, and downright weird stuff. Niche stuff. Magazines that are 20 years old (we are talking about art, music, and culture mags, not Vogue or People). Worn and well-loved used volumes of poetry, film. Languages (huge German and Spanish section). Some records, though nothing recent. Mostly things from the 40s-50s-60s, maaayyyyyybe some a little older. Show tunes. Soundtracks. Patty Duke. Fashion, design, music (Jazz, rock, British Invasion). Was bummed there was no hiphop section, but I'm not sure I should have ever presumed there would be one. Religion, fiction, history, and more. Mostly organized. Loosely may be a better word. Makes it more like a fun treasure hunt, the way things are arranged. Maybe in the design section, you might find a random copy of, "Making Dinosaurs Dance" or a Netter's anatomy coloring book. Both are in some way about art and design, but they are unexpected discoveries. Mercer is smaller than the Strand, but not as busy or as crowded, at least not on the Wednesday night I went. As I said on my review of the Strand, the person I presume to be the owner of this shop was there working the register. I could be wrong about the owner part, but I could tell the guy was old school LES and village. Beatnik hat, scarf, vest, round rimmed glasses, beard. As far as value, a lot to be found here. Good prices and some interesting finds. And loved that they were playing jazz. Whereas other stores might feel commercial and crowded, this felt like a hidden community spot.

Their collaboration with artist is just a wonderful thing to behold. I'm a super fan and collector of Richard Prince's work and his artist catalogs. Karma has been the source of almost my entire collection of his catalogs in addition to a bunch of limited edition, rare zines by Prince. They've also created amazing editions with Julian Schnabel and Jonas Woods, artists that I also appreciate and collect. This is a wonderful and art-souled place to spend some time, and in my case, lots of money over the years (well spent btw).
