One of the Owners, Karl, used to work at Skylight in Los Angeles andI found him to be a superb book group leader (we read Pynchon, Gaddis,Knausegaard, Ferrante, Renate Adler, Gass , Joyce)who can get you thru the most DIFICULT of books with ease and you leave feeling as if you've connected with someone who loves books and understands how to impart that to his customers. There is a new book group now coming out of AEON and would recommend ANYTHING that Karl Bauer is discussing even if you think it is not the kind of thing you might want to read. They also carry best sellers and are enlarging their children's section, where they carry books in ENGLISH and CHINESE!!! Since the bookstore is located in what is fast becoming a VERY HIPneighborhood in the heart of 'old' chinatown. Go AEON!! Remember the turning of pages in a book is much more fun and satisfying that reading on the INTERNET (if you ask me). And they carry both 'used treasures' which are unique and really reflect taste , but they also carry NEW BOOKS and the atmosphere is that of a "TRUE BOOKstore"

There are also used and signed volumes. Legend has it one is hollowed out in the shape of a wrench. I buy my favorite Manhattan Diary Datebook. It's slim, has great info in it, such as phone numbers from city government, to hotels, stores, police precincts, zip codes AND phone area codes, subway maps, and much more. This year I also bought some wonderful magnets with great sayings on them. The SERVICE IS EXCELLENT HERE!!! I usually call to make sure they have the datebook in stock, and then I head over. And then I get some great food at one of the food places just steps from the POSMAN Book Store. You can also enjoy some Ben & Jerry's ICE CREAM at the scoop shop near the book store. In fact this location do not carry any journals nor diaries, or even postcards remotely close for tourists. I would imagine they would have printed matter for tourist but none of postcards or greeting cards, due to the size of this retail space. The associates are callous and inattentive to my prescence or needs. Whatever happen to the ethics of customer service in 2012 era, did it gone down into the plaguing toilet like mannerism, respect, honesty, open positive communication, and sincerity?

As much as I love Kinokuniya Books at Bryant Park -- the more, the merrier for this bibliophile. This location captures the spirit of the Nolita store, but is expansive enough to accommodate tourists who don't make it downtown. The bookstore is well-organized and well-curated. I was pleasantly surprised by how expansive their fiction, non-fiction and economic theory selections were. I'll definitely be back soon -- I can see this area becoming part of my weekend routine, with a few books picked up at McNally Jackson, followed by a glass at Lodi's.
