I can't tell you about the dentist because I haven't actually seen him yet (except for a quick evaluation). And there's the problem. Almost four months ago I went in with serious pain because my toddler banged my tooth. The dentist said I needed a lot of work quite urgently. But when I learned how much it would cost, and that they don't accept insurance, I had to save up for a couple of months to be able to afford it. And then, because I needed so much work, I had to wait a long time for a two hour time slot. Then when the time finally arrived, they canceled because the dentist got Covid (which I do appreciate the caution, but I wish he could have worked extra hours or something to make up for it--at least for the urgent patients--rather than putting me in the back of the line again waiting for an extra long appointment.) I asked them to please put me on the cancellation list which they did. So yesterday they tell me that they have a two hour slot available (YAY!!!) But I couldn't confirm right away because I had to a) find a babysitter, b) find a ride to their other office 45 min away, and c) reschedule a job interview. They said "I will hold off on offering the time to other patients until I hear from you!" From the time stamps, it took me 19 minutes to line up all of those factors. I confirmed the appointment, and we were all systems go! ...until they called me back 18 minutes later and told me that they had given the slot to someone else who needed to move their appointment from the afternoon to earlier in the day. They said that I could get 3/4 of my teeth fixed, but there was no longer time for all four. (So in mom world this means that I need to find another babysitter, get another ride, and wait even longer to fix my situation which they initially told me was very urgent.) I told her that this was very "frustrating" because I had worked so hard to be able to take that appointment. She replied that the other patient had confirmed with a different receptionist before I got back to her, and they would honor that (then why did she say that she would hold it for me? And did they really compare exactly when, during that 19 minute period, the other patient switched their appointment? Or did it happen during the following 18 minutes before they called?) At this point I literally begged her, explaining everything I had done to get that appointment. And how did she respond? By insulting me! She said that she did not "understand the mentality" of someone thinking they had more right to it than someone else. And actually, when I called back again several minutes later to ask if they could please explain the situation to the other patient and ask if they were willing to be flexible, a different receptionist insulted me again using almost exactly the same words. So let me explain my mentality, since they both find it so crazy and/or difficult to understand. A) I have an *urgent* and serious dental problem. This is not just a check-up. This is a major intervention. I don't know what the other person needed, but I do know that it only required 30 minutes. B) I wanted it *way* more than this other person. I busted my butt to arrange all of the variables that had to come together. I called in a favor. My babysitter rearranged her schedule. I figured out a ride. I freaking moved a job interview! (That one detail I didn't mention on the phone, but it's not like I was telling them my whole life story. They did know about the babysitter and the ride and the fact that I had to save up for *months* to be able to afford this.) The other person simply wanted to move her appointment to earlier in the day because something else came up--meaning that she was prioritizing whatever else over seeing the dentist, whereas I was moving everything else to get to the dentist. C) It would be fairly easy for this other person to find another 30 minute slot, whereas I now have to wait for several weeks--again--for an urgent and serious issue. And D) they actually told me that they were holding it, which is why I went to the effort to jump through all of these hoops. So in sum, a) they made a mistake by double booking the same time, b) in fixing the mistake they prioritized A minor issue for someone making a change due to convenience, rather than someone with a major, serious issue who they knew had jumped through a lot of hoops to be able to go, and then c) they insinuated that I am either crazy or entitled for begging them to reconsider given the circumstances. The more that I think about it, even if the other person did slip in first (while the spot was supposedly being held for me), how does first come first serve make sense as a policy anyway? This is a medical office, not a florist! When you go into the ER they prioritize people based on need. This was a judgment call, and they made a bad one. Needless to say, I really ***really*** wish that Salt Lake had another biological dentist. read more

Best holistic dental office. I found Dr. Ulm six years ago when I was looking to remove my awful mercury amalgams. (I had at least six). Dr. Ulm is an expert at doing this correctly. The staff has always been professional, helpful, and kind. I live 35-40 minutes away, but the drive so worth it. Before Dr. Ulm had his office in SLC, I was happy to drive even further to his other office in Pleasant Grove. My health has improved, because Dr. Ulm provided cavitation surgery on all four of my wisdom teeth spaces (which contained rotten bone), and he removed three bad root canals. Frozen shoulder, neck pain, and body numbness all on the left side where all three root canals were....vanished. I do have good dental insurance, but it is not so great when a provider isn't a "preferred provider." Nonetheless, I so so so appreciate that Dr. Ulm's office DOES work with your insurance to retrieve what coverage is possible. Every bit helps. Be sure to sign up for the "in house plan", you'll end up saving if anyone/yourself needs services like a cavity fill. Dr. Ulm is not a drill and fill, flouride pushing dentist. That alone is GOLD. But his soft touch, gentle chair-side manner, and expertise makes him indispensable. I really do hope that when the day finally comes for him to retire...he is able to replace himself with three others trained by him. read more

Went there to get ozone cleaning. They didn't put enough water down my throat (which honestly is a dumb practice with ozone). I started gasping for breath, I got ozone in my lungs. The dental assistant just waited it out after I caught my breath and I reached out to them via email.. heard nothing. Ozone is damaging to the lungs... for someone certified... you'd think they'd have a better procedure. read more

How can I even begin to express the gratitude I have for Dr. Ulm and his staff. Previous to finding this office I was TERRIFIED of the dentist having had so many horrific experiences yet I am happy to say I have had nothing but excellent experiences with everyone here. This is a great establishment. Very clean and ethical work. They just don't work well with some major insurance companies. And for dental work, that is very important. You are required to pay upfront. They tell you they will work with the insurance company to get the patient a reimbursement, but I have not received any monies back all last year for some major dental work. That hits the pocket hard. This place would be far better if the insurance aspect were worked out. read more

This has got to be one of the strangest dental appointments I have ever had, and I've had some weird ones. After going to many drill-happy dentists I wanted to try something else. I also had severe anxiety after a major medical trauma that left it difficult for me to feel like I can't breathe. So I sought out a more natural dentist with the hope that they would support me through my anxiety issues. They state on their website that they participate with all insurance plans and I took that to mean literally what it says, but it's not true. I went for my appointment and was caught off guard by the hygienists wearing street clothes. I wanted to say that was maybe just a nice casual approach that made the staff enjoy work more, but their street clothes were unprofessional, too casual, dirty, and sloppy. At first I thought some parent was striking up a conversation with me and then realized it was my hygienist. Next, I couldn't help but notice the dirty conditions of the office. It was old and outdated but on top of that it was just grimy and dirty. There is no excuse for what it looked like. I have never seen a dental office not be pristinely clean. I was really determined to let go of that and the hygienists not being in scrubs because I was very intrigued by the approach to fillings and the "ozone" treatment as an alternative to fluoride. I wanted to basically have a consultation so I declined a cleaning and got a shaming lecture from the hygienist for it. Then I got harassed for not using an electric toothbrush. She left and waited for the dentist, then came back again and repeated her lecture. Then the dentist came back and his concern for my anxiety made everything better. I thought I could get over the other issues because I agreed with his approach to my treatment needs and appreciated how helpful he was in addressing and planning to accommodate my anxiety for the fillings. But then...then the billing. Because of how many cavities I had I wanted an estimate from my insurance company to make sure it wasn't some crazy amount, because we were also going to remove silver and replace it with resin and I had no idea if that would be covered. That's when I found out at the front desk that they actually are not in-network with any insurance plan at all. They will bill them, but they are not in network, and they seemed to think that was the same thing. They told me no worries, if my insurance only covered some but not all they would just write off the rest. So I let go of that issue also and left, waiting to get the treatment estimate from my insurance. A month later I got a bill because my insurance did not cover everything because I went to an out of network provider. It was only $13, no big deal, and I figured they were going to write it off like they said. But then I got another bill. So I emailed and asked about it and reminded them that they told me no big deal, they would write it off if my insurance didn't cover it. They then sent me a copy of form I signed that said I would still pay them even if my insurance didn't. At the time I signed it, before the appointment, I was under the impression that they took all insurance plans and wasn't worried about their being anything leftover. Then by the time I found out the insurance wasn't actually in network, they assured me it would be written off. But now through the email they changed that story and sent the original form, clearly they were prepared for this argument. Then I got the estimate for the treatment and again, because it was out of network, it was going to cost about 3 times what an in network provider would charge. At that point I decided I would not be going to them again. And I just got another bill for the stupid $13 so I'm sucking that up to my mistake for not knowing I needed to clarify the difference between "we participate with all insurance" and "we are an in network provider" for all insurance. Hopefully with the virus going around they decide to give their office a deep clean, because it was just flat out not ok. read more

I LOVE this dental office! Which is amazing, because I've spent most of my life hating the dentist with a passion. Growing up, any time I went to the dentist I felt like I didn't go numb, but the dentists told me that I was "just being a baby", when in reality I could feel everything being done. As an adult, any time I've had to receive any kind of treatment medically, it's taken two to three times the normal amount of numbing agent to numb me at all, so turns out I'm not a baby, but I had only gone to dental practices that didn't care. Fast forward, about 6 years ago I broke my tooth, but because of my fear of going to the dentist, and the fact that no one could see it because it was a molar, I never got it taken care of. Not proud of it, but it happens. Which leads me to my explanation of why I absolutely swear by this dental practice. It finally got to the point where I knew that my tooth was going to cause serious problems if I didn't take care of it. Dr. Ulm took the time to make sure that I was TOTALLY cared for, up to and including making sure that I was completely and totally numb, which took about an hour and a half. He also continued to check on me throughout, taking breaks to re-numb me because of how quickly I metabolized the numbing agent, made sure that I was comfortable and knew what was going on in my mouth, all while taking care while removing my tooth that had decayed to the nerve gently. I have super deep roots and my tooth wouldn't budge, but Dr. Ulm didn't rush or get frustrated, he just let me know what was going on and kept working to get the tooth out as painlessly as possible. I seriously could go on and on, but it was the best dental experience of my life. Dana, their practice manager, made sure that I knew exactly what was needed, what my follow up care was, and made sure that I was on the same page with my treatment. Which was something I have never experienced with any other dental practice. I know this review is super long, but I've been back for my cleaning and fillings (I don't recommend not going to the dentist for 10 years, just a tip), and the staff is ALWAYS super friendly, super kind and makes sure that I am comfortable with what is going on. Good dentists are hard to come by, and Dr. Ulm is not just good, he is absolutely the best dentist I have ever met. This dental office is the ONLY one that I will go to! Seriously can't recommend them enough. read more

Dr Ulum has been my dentist only for about 2 months- since I moved here to UT. My experience has been fantastic !! I never have to wait long in the waiting room and/or in the chair. Dr Ulum is super knowledgeable in providing a high level of non toxic care and that is important to me. When I recently had an extraction and then got an infection at 24 weeks pregnant, Dr Ulum was very attentive, checking in with me often and even calling me on the weekends. Dr. Ulm and his staff make it well worth my while to make the drive from Salt Lake City to Lindon to seek their care. I always feel like they take time to listen to my concerns, treat me as an individual not just another case, and look after my best interests and well-being. As someone who has previously had many negative experiences with other dentists, visits to Synergy dental put me at ease - the environment is so much more comfortable and less intimidating than other dental offices. Added bonus: I don't know how he does it, but Dr. Ulm gives the most comfortable shots I've ever experienced... I'm not nearly as afraid of shots as I once was. read more

Great staff, comfortable environment, and honest, straightforward dental work. Dr. Ulm is good at explaining any problems I'm having and what my options are. I like having a dentist who I can trust, even when I'm being given bad news about a tooth. He and his staff always help me understand any procedures that are being done, and also ensure that I'm comfortable and at ease when I'm there. My husband and I have been patients of theirs for over six years now and have benefited so much from their safe and holistic approach to dentistry. For years I was terrified of going to the dentist, but I can honestly say that I do not experience an ounce of anxiety when visiting Synergy Dental. We have each had cleanings, cavities filled, and old amalgam fillings replaced without any discomfort and our visits have been pleasant and relaxing. (Who'd ever think you could describe a trip to the dentist as relaxing?) We even live an hour away from their office but continue to make the drive to Lindon because it is WELL worth it. Do not go here. I took my family of 5 here in March of 2017. I sought them out because I was tired of being treated so poorly by other dentists for refusing fluoride and questioning other treatments. I wanted a natural dentist. I knew they most likely would not be a network provider of my insurance and was fine with paying full price if necessary. Our first visit, I felt like it was good and I purchased several dental care items from them, glad to give them my money. We paid more than $1,200.00 out of pocket on that first visit. They scheduled me personally, for a periodontal treatment which was split into two sessions. During their periodontal pocket depth testing, it was extremely painful and the technician said I was bleeding a lot. I thought it odd because I rarely have bleeding gums and my husband does have periodontal disease, so I know what the symptoms are, and I personally, do not have any. Not one time was a cost estimate ever disclosed to me, and while I thought it odd, I didn't really care, because I was already expecting to pay full price. 2 months after my cleaning (which I paid $300 out of pocket for) they sent me a bill for around $700. And I really shouldn't call it a bill, because it was a letter, a combative one at that, and they attached a very vague statement that just said 'balance forward'. Since I had 5 family members treated there, and had purchased several accessories, I thought that there might be a mistake and we may have been double billed for something. I called the office to get an itemized statement. They could not help me at all, so I went into the office to talk to someone. The person I talked to at that time, apologized for not disclosing information and said that they had a temp working there who didn't keep accurate notes and on and on. She said she would review my account and that hopefully my balance would be zero. I told her to just let me know what I owe, with a detailed statement and I would gladly pay it. 3 more months go by and I hear nothing. I took one of my daughters in 6 weeks ago to have a tooth extracted. Again I wasn't given a cost estimate, I just paid what they asked me to with no questions. And they said they would bill the insurance for the rest and let me know if I owed anything else. I hear nothing, until a combative letter came in the mail. The same tone, acting as if they have been trying to collect and I have been not paying, and with the same vague 'bill'. Balance forward.... I called the office, this time asked for the billing person, the office person insisted I could speak with her, so I told her all of my issues. She then said of course, that she would have the billing person call me. I receive a call from the Manager Dana, who first of all, acts as if she just coincidentally 'happened upon' my account today and saw there was a note so she decided to call. I guess she immediately assumed I was asking for a credit(which I NEVER have) and would literally not even let me talk at all! I was so frustrated and upset I hung up on her and will never be going back. All I wanted was an explanation and a detailed bill so I knew what I was paying for. You know, the kind of bill that literally every company provides? Whether it be a dentist, doctor, hospital, utility company, etc? I don't understand why that is so complicated for them. I also do have to mention that I have been to 2 other dentists who have performed periodontal pocket depth testing and my numbers are fine, the last dentist I saw even said that this dentist was most likely trying to 'pad their pockets.' The treatments they put me through were very time costing and invasive. I really don't care about the financial aspect, but I feel almost assaulted and violated by the unnecessary physical treatments they performed on me. They clearly don't care about their patients health or performing natural dentistry. I sure wish I had looked at the other reviews before going to them. read more
