Sze Chuan is still one of my top 3 favorite Chinese restaurants in the Milwaukee area. It seems they are always busy, but the staff also does a good job getting guests seated, managing the wait list, getting food served and tables turned without rushing the guests. The Spicy Pork Dumplings have become my go-to appetizer, and the fried spring rolls are also very good. On a most recent visit, we ordered hot pot. Our server brought us the sheet to make our selections. You can choose from mild broth, spicy broth, or half tray of each. The spicy is pretty hot with lots of red chili peppers soaking in it, so I scooped out the chili peppers to keep rhe flavor but lessen the impact on my palate. For 2 guests, I recommend choosing 3 items from the list, maybe 2 protein and one veggie or 2 veggie and one protein to start. You can order more if you finish and need more. This is in addition to the two appetizers you will choose, which is included with rhe hot pot dinner. It's a great value! Tried the hot pot! To order you fill out the paper and put in a qty. we tried the half vegetarian and half meat spicy broth hot pot. The beef lamb. Fatty beef, and tripes were really good along with all the veggies. Be careful with the hot veggies so as not to burn your tongue. The food's so good, you could keep eating even when you're full, at least that's what happened to me. Definitely try the hot pot. I'm definitely coming back next time to try their other no. This place came highly recommended by a friend and she was so right. I was just along for the ride and defaulted to her for ordering and we all came away happy, full, and with leftovers to enjoy. We got the szechuan grilled beef, string beans, pork & tofu, szechuan cold noodles with peanuts, General Tso's chicken, and spicy pork dumplings. We shared a large Sapporo, too. Everything was incredible. The food and drink came out super fast and we had a lovely feast before us. The service is friendly and relaxed. Brief check-ins, water refills but mainly leaving us to enjoy and chat, which I really like. It's a place to hang out for a while with friends and family and take your time. I'm still thinking about the Dry Chili Fish Filet days later. Had that mala we sichuan people like. My sichuan dad would slap his knees by how good the food is. Service was fast and to the point. Tons of people at the restaurant around 6:30-7pm. Not pretentious but clean. They had 水煮牛 (boiled beef - it's Sliced Beef in Chili Pepper Soup on the menu) which that's how you know this food is authentic. But I actually really enjoyed the Crispy Chicken in Garlic Sauce - it definitely was not as spicy but had that crispy fried texture but glazed in sweet and sour sauce. I should have eaten at Sze Chuan ages ago. I was told it was amazing. I even lived very near to it in the past. It's been on my list, but I didn't go. That was an error. The restaurant is in a tucked away strip mall and is modest in size and decor. The strip mall also contains hidden treasures like a Chinese bakery/BBQ and an Asian store. We went early on a Saturday evening with friends. The service was excellent, although with some staff there were language hurdles. No matter - everyone made it work and we were left with an abundance of amazing food at a reasonable price. Wine and beers are served, as well as smoothies and other non-alcoholic drinks. BF ordered crab rangoon as a starter, which was good. He liked it more than I did, but it was nice and crispy. I just didn't think it compared to other dishes. My vegetable egg roll was very good as well, but nothing terribly unique. He went bold on the entree and ordered the pork intestine and blood cake dish. He really enjoyed it and said it was quite spicy. The portions are generous and he did bring a lot home. I ordered the homestyle tofu, which normally has pork. I got it without to make it vegetarian friendly. The textures were very good and the sauce was intensely flavorful, but mild. I also ordered a supplementary dish of braised mushrooms and Shanghai greens. Everyone at the table enjoyed this dish, particularly the greens, which are a variety of bok choy, called pac choy. The mushrooms were wonderful, with the texture of wood ears. I also had plenty of leftovers to eat the next day. Our friends ordered the Szechuan spicy pork dumplings and they got rave reviews. My cousin did say they were not overly spicy. She went on to order the sizzling black pepper beef, which she said was good, but not nearly as unique or deeply flavored as the other dishes. Her husband ordered the pork intestine with clear noodles, which he enjoyed but said was extremely spicy. He did leave a lot of sauce behind since it was so hot. He also had the ox tendon and maw in spicy sauce, which came with chopped peanuts on top. He seemed really pleased with that dish. We agreed that we would happily go back to explore the menu more. Everything was excellent and I thought the prices were generally quite reasonable, especially for the quantity of food. I do wish the menu had more descriptive text, so I could familiarize myself with the dishes. The choices are many and overwhelming and the menu is huge. I'd also love to see a symbol for vegetarian options since it's very hard to know otherwise and many of the vegetable dishes included pork or other meat. As we left the restaurant was getting increasingly busy with people waiting by the door for seats. This is a popular place for good reason. read more

Recently moved nearby & have been on the hunt for a good Chinese restaurant. Read the reviews & was excited to try this place. To say I was disappointed would be the understatement of the year. We got sesame chicken & orange chicken. The chicken had a terrible texture- it was mushy. Couldn't tell much of a difference in flavor between the sesame & orange chicken. Both of the dishes were ? bright red in color which was off-putting. & To top it off, the red chicken stained my counter tops! Wowow. I am still drooling thinking about the incredible food here. We came on a Tuesday night with a party of 6 and were seated right away. From the moment we walked in we were greeted right away and the servers came by to check on us several times to refill our water (always a must). We started with appetizers of spicy pork dumplings and egg rolls. The dumplings were incredible. They were so flavorful in the chili sauce. The egg rolls were also very delicious with a perfectly thin/crispy wonton. For the main food everything was incredible! You must come with an appetite to share these generous portions of food. Our group favorites were the sliced beef in chili pepper soup, twice cooked pork, and crispy chicken in garlic sauce. The mapo tofu in pork was also incredible in addition to their fried rice and dry chili fish filet (although too spicy for me!) We got dry pot with spicy jelly noodles, cauliflower flower, fish fillets in a stone pot, three mushrooms, spicy chicken, and rice ball in the wine shop. I got praised for ordering the food. Would say everything was delicious. We didn't go overboard with the spicy level. I'd lean towards fish and mushrooms this time. If I was reviewing based on my order alone, I would have given 5 stars. My boyfriend said his lo mein was a little bland- but this could have been from him cautiously ordering no spice/mild. So when we order again, I will encourage him to try a higher spice level to see if that helps. The potstickers were good- definitely homemade. I hadn't ever eaten in the restaurant, always had carry out, and the food had been great. Ate at the restaurant for the first time. I will never sit in a booth there again. The seats look like they are padded, but they are not and it feels like you're sitting on a board. The ambience was fine. Nothing special. Service was good. This was the first time I was disappointed in any food I've eaten from here. I ordered the shrimp with vegetables. Portion size was good, but the shrimp was kind of overcooked and somewhat mushy and had not been cleaned well so that was kind of nasty. There were some super thin carrot strips that looked almost like the peelings with the dirt marks on them. The carrots should've definitely been peeled. Amazing experience! Our service was fast and the servers were very nice. The restaurant is overall nice with nice tableware and real chopsticks (not the flimsy disposable wooden ones). We ordered the crab Rangoon and veggie rolls for an appetizer, which we loved! The dipping sauce is 10/10. My friend and I tried their stone pot, which was a fun experience but a tad spicer than the server explained it would be and had more of a Tabasco sauce heat to it. The service, food, and atmosphere of this restaurant are all great! We stopped in here yesterday to pick up some food to go. Every interaction we had with staff members was friendly. They were also patient while we tried to figure out what to order. The restaurant itself was clean and very nicely decorated with lovely canvas screen prints on the walls, hanging Chinese lanterns, and tasteful table cloths. I would love to dine in, next time! The food was really tasty and reminiscent of the year we spent teaching English in China. We tried the Dan Dan noodles based on previous reviews and we were not disappointed! I wish I would have gotten two orders of this dish. We also tried the sliced potatoes in vinegar, the string green beans, and the scallion pancake which are dishes we've searched for and rarely find around Milwaukee. Lastly, we got the General Tso's Chicken. I would not recommend the scallion pancake which was dried out (though the flavor was fantastic!). They were the size of a finger and filled with cabbage no seasoning. we should of ordered the vegetable rolls for $1.50 less. Chicken and vegetables was mainly bok choy. Not the biggest serving. Sesame chicken was a bit overcooked. Seems like a lunch portion for $15. The table next to ours had 3 very young children. They were frying their meal. Restaurant was very busy at 6:30 but we were seated promptly but grew concerned when no server approached us for 15 minutes. When she did arrive she urgently demanded our order as she had someone on the phone in her hand. Simple order, egg rolls, vegetable egg rolls, Mongolian beef, and chicken fried rice,and a can of Coke. No food for 15 minutes, then a plate flopped down with the announcement, Egg Roll, and the server disappeared. Now I am upset and seek another server. "Is this the traditional egg roll or the vegetable? Do you have any mustard?". He replied he would check. 5 minutes. Traditional egg roll (now cold) and mustard packets. 5 minutes, vegetables egg rolls. 10 minutes, Mongolian beef, covered in pepper flakes and little sauce. I wait 10 minutes for the chicken fried rice which never arrived. Mongolian beef now cold. I pay for the food served even though the beef was cold and uneaten. The restaurant is located in a small strip mall that has ample parking. The moment you walk in you are welcomed by the aroma of chilies. The staple, must have item for me are the szechuan pork dumplings; the perfect amount of spice, texture, and umami. This time I tried the wonton noodle soup which was tasty on its own, but I added some chili oil to give it a little kick. The Shanghai greens were just an order of braised bok choy, which I love, but lacked any exciting flavor compared to the other items I've eaten. My favorite place to go for HOT POT in milwaukee! The half & half flavored broths are so flavorful. The spicy side is my favorite but the regular side offers nice relief if it's too spicy. The thin sliced lamb is my favorite meat, but the fatty beef also has a ton of flavor. This is definitely a smaller restaurant with only a few tables so expect to wait if you want sit down service.
