After closing their lunch buffet due to COVID-19, Szechuan Restaurant in Salem, VA has reopened it as of 10/01/2025. They serve the same delicious selections they originally offered with their crispy General Tso's Chicken being a favorite of most. While being a buffet, the service is still great as always. The atmosphere is a little calmer than other buffets, which is a plus. As for the price, it is roughly $13 a person, which is a little high for lunch, but better than some similar places in the area. All in all, I'm glad Szechuan is offering its buffet again. read more

I had a craving for Chinese takeout and I wasn't sure I'd be able to find anything decent in Roanoke. On its face, it seemed okay. A heavy bag greeted me, and ample customization was available online. However, I found the dishes I ordered somewhat bland. The Buddha's delight dish had a strange off taste to it that caused a bit of an allergic reaction in my mouth and then made me violently ill when I tried it again. Not sure what was in it but nothing good. Even if I didn't have that experience, it was a good quantity of food but nothing that I would have been in a hurry to return for. Since they've started their noon buffet we've been regular customers. Their evening meals have been the best in town and now their noon buffet challengs their evening meal. Great food, always hot and very good service with minimal waiters/waiteresses. The noon buffet is medium priced for this time of day. read more

Finally, an Asian restaurant that is on par with what I consider to be the best place in my mind from my childhood (Young Chows in Beckley WV). The sauces were tasty. The meats were prepared perfectly and were tender and flavorful. The rice was fantastic. The service on Christmas Eve was prompt and courteous. My wife had the Peking duck, which was probably the best Peking duck we've ever had. We will definitely be coming back here when we return to the Roanoke area. read more

I had already tasted some of this restaurant's food at a business meeting in which they had it bought it to go in serving trays, but this was going to be the first day I visited the restaurant, took a look at the menu, and would have a total dining experience in its physical location and atmosphere. A friend of mine just happened to invite me to go try this restaurant out. It is located in a strp mall in Salem, Virginia, with plenty of parking spaces in the mall's parking lot. In front of the restaurant, there are stairs as well as a cement ramp to make the entrance easily accessible to the older population and wheelchairs. Its bright red business sign is found over the brick building, and a bright blue canopy under the sign announces FREE DELIVERY. When one enters the front door, around the foyer, one encounters a multitude of frame certificates of Dining Awards from the Roanoker Magazine and other places as well as framed articles about the restaurant and its owners. One can see the pride that they have for this restaurant. When one enters, the bar is on the left, also surrounded by framed awards and photographs of the owners. It was very clean and simply decorated with a nice carpet, blue ceiling, and bright red round chandeliers. The seating arrangement was blue and light color wood booths all over the restaurant. We were quickly greeted and taken to our booth as soon as we arrived by a native host and given a copy of the menu. Then, after a short time, a native server greeted us with a big smile and took our order. I thanked her in Chinese, and she smiled back, indicating that she understood the language. We ordered the Crab Rangoon as an appetizer and the Happy Family main dish from the Chef's Suggestion part of the menu. The food was plentiful, included fried rice, and very well presented. The chicken and beef pieces were very thinly cut, but the shrimp and scallops were nice and plumpy. And the whole dish could have used more seasoning because it was a bit bland, even though they had a bowl with soy and duck sause on the table. Many customers of all ages arrived while we were there, and as we were leaving, an older group of individuals were just arriving, so this seemed to be a very popular place. Who seemed to be the manager greeted me with a smile when I went to use the restroom, and I thanked him for such a well organized restaurant and wonderful food and service. I had been going there for about six months and my favorite meal at lunch was the green pepper steak with onions, rice and egg roll. Had not tried other menu items. Ambiance and service was always good and reasonably priced for meal. Last time there was about a month or so ago. Same lunch order. but they evidently forgot to tenderize the beef. You can see how this is typically done on YouTube videos. I could not chew the beef and after trying left the beef on the plate. When the waiter asked if I wanted it to go i suggested he or the cook chew the beef. Was not offered a discount or an apology. I may go back and try something else (it's hard to mess up chicken) but now I fix my favorite meal at home, tenderizing the beef. I save gas and $. read more

Have a friend who insists on eating here, so we've been here several times in the last year. The food has been virtually tasteless. Tonight I had a noodle dish with chicken and vegetables and the carrots were the tastiest thing in the dish. I also had an egg roll that was worse than the frozen ones you get at the grocery store! My wife had the crab Rangoon appetizer and she said it was the worst she's ever had. The food has been mediocre the last 3 or 4 times we've eaten here! Our service was quick and cheerful. The server checked on us frequently to make sure everything was okay and that our drinks were refilled. The prices are reasonable. The food? Mediocre....All of us ordered the chicken lo mein (to be fair, the other two with me liked theirs). I found it a bit bland, though the chicken was very tender. The rest of it, along with the veggie rice, was also lacking flavor. The egg roll that accompanied it was dripping with oil. I ordered Broccoli with Garlic Sauce as a side - not great, mainly because I could not detect much garlic. Bathroom report: Ladies room had a changing table that appeared to be broken. The floor was sticky. The faucets were sticky. The room looked like it could use a good deep cleaning. One of the women I was with went in later and was also pretty grossed out. Yes! This restaurant has great food, bright atmosphere, and affordable prices. I'm not normally a fan of Chinese restaurants in strip malls, but I'm glad we took a chance on this one because it was excellent! It was very clean with friendly service. As you walk in you see lots of awards they've won and calendars from over the years. This photo is just the starter soup and it was delicious! Everything else was just as fresh and appetizing, but we were hungry and ate it before I remembered to take more photos. The food was bad. The Rangoon's were like jelly and very oily. The sea food was extremely bad, extremely bland. It said that it was fried in the description with king crab meat- they used imitation crab and it was steamed. The plate came out in a bowl with a lot of water and she dumped it onto the sizzling plate in front of us. I tried a little bit of everything on it and spit most of it out. Okay now, where did the flavors go in my dish. It was a simple 'Buddha delight' option on their menu. The server presented it as a really great sounding dish.... As you can see by my one star it was not. There was no wow to any seasoning being presented in any bites of my food. The dish seemed to appear as steamed vegetables and white rice. Barley any sauce. I'm a saucy gal, I need a flavorful saucy dish. This did not help a case of the Sunday scaries. Go for a cheaper restaurant and you may find better flavors than here, find the good sauce. I was hesitated to go to Szechuan restaurant because of the reviews. Craving for some ducks, and one of my coworker have said some good things about the restaurant, my fiancé and I went there to try. The restaurant seems pretty clean and fancier than the average Chinese restaurant, and I guess of course that comes with the price, I agree with everyone's rating on that , it's definitely a $$ restaurant. As soon as we walked in, a staff greet us, and before ordering anything (not even order a drink yet), they already poured us water, and offer us carry out plastic bag after noticing I am carrying a box for leftovers. We ordered a half order of Peking duck, and an order of beef lo mein. The Peking duck looks fancy! Have some fancy flowers made with vegetables for decoration. And most of all, it tastes pretty good, skin is crunchy, with some meat under, sliced just like it supposed to be, with green onion, some sauce and steamed pancake on the side. Yummmmm! Taste pretty good, similar to what I remember when I had it in Hong Kong! However, I would prefer my duck abit fatter Oh and the Peking duck comes with a huge bowl of rice too. The server even offer to wrap the Peking duck with the pancake for you! The lo mein was pretty good as well, give you plenty of beef, and it was tender. I came to Roanoke for a business trip, and was craving some good Chinese. Unfortunately, there isn't much choice around these parts. I just asked the front desk for a recommendation and crossed my fingers. Well, TL;DR, this place is probably good for people who don't know what real Chinese food is or those who prefer Americanized Chinese food, but it's extremely disappointing otherwise. There is 0% Real Sichuan food here. They don't even use the characteristic tongue numbing lemony Sichuan peppercorn that is characteristic of the cuisine. Also Sichuan food is supposed to be spicy. I even specifically asked for extra spicy and told them to underline "MAKE-ME-CRY-AND-SWEAT-EXTRA SPICY" on the order a lot of times so the kitchen gets the point. It didn't even tingle my tongue... I was so sad. I got shrimp, which was the best out of the lot I ordered. The broccoli with garlic was sweet like candy... Chinese food isn't supposed to be sweet. The soup tasted like it was made with water, boiled veggies and tofu, and thickened with cornstarch. There was steamed rice too. I guess that was pretty good. It's hard to mess up rice. read more

I went to place a carry out and after feeling rushed to place my order I was told they don't have any sauces or salt to hand out for carry out. Food tasted sweet when it was suppose to be salty and they gave me 1 rice for 2 different entrees small quantities of meat that costed me $13.95 per dish and it was all mushy. Also once I arrived to the hospital I realized they didn't put any cutlery with my meal is it not standard to not place cutlery with carry out order ??? While I can't imagine Chinese food being interpreted worse than this I can attest that what I ate was no where near Chinese but most importantly it was no where near food.
