My husband and I enjoyed our late lunch at Blacksburg No. 1, but our meal was quite pricey for what we got. We started with the crystal shrimp dumplings ($6.99) and pan fried dumplings ($5.99). The shrimp dumplings were chewy and a bit fishy tasting, and we'll not get them again. The pan fried dumplings were much better. But they weren't served with the usual teriyaki sauce, just with packaged soy sauce. For our entrees, I had the hand pulled noodles with shrimp in clear broth ($9.25), and my husband got the beef with spicy broth ($9.25). The bowls were full of noodles, and we liked their chewy consistency. My broth was slightly bland, but the shrimp were really good. They tasted like they were marinated in a sauce and then stir fried before being added to the soup. My soup was simple, with just noodles, bok choy, green onions, and shrimp. My husband's beef was similarly marinated and cooked before being added to the bowl. It was of good quality, too. The spicy soup had better flavor than mine, too. So, why only three stars? For the price, I'd expect real silverware and bowls, not the flimsy plasticware they used. So much trash! And their minimal service was a bit off-putting. We had to order at the counter, pick up our food, and bus our own table. But...their soup hits the spot on a cold day, and we really did like the noodles. I'm confused as to why this place got such a low rating. I almost didn't go but I'm glad I did. I loved my food, talk about flavor! I got the Fatty Beef Soup last night and refrigerated it and had it today and it was still perfect! The lady at the front desk was able to communicate with me clearly and my order was her recommendation, I wanted pork belly but she said fatty beef was her favorite, I added eggs and chicken to it so I could have more protein and eat less of the noodles and I had my personalized meal. There are many reviews here that give Blacksburg No. 1 low ratings due to language barrier and/or the "rude" customer service. I would bet that these low reviews are coming from individuals who are unfamiliar with Asian cuisine culture in general. All of my fellow Yelpers who are familiar with this know that with Asian takeout cuisine, little to no service is expected. I also believe that a language barrier is no reason for a lower review. I visit Blacksburg a few times each year and I'm a variety guy so this trip I searched for some new eateries and found No. 1. It's a great find the menu is very well executed and the portion sized was immense all while keeping the price low. This is a seat yourself order at the counter place the lady was helpful but young and inexperienced so her description of the dishes was inaccurate. I enjoyed my pan fried beef noodles non the less however I didn't eat most of the weirdly jerky like beef disc thingys. I also orders an appetizer which cane a few minutes after my entree. You see you order at the counter and they call your number given on your receipt so you can run up and grab it. They also serve everything in take out foam boxes. This is a turn off but a clever move because you are going to need a takeout box anyway. Overall the food was good (except the beef) the place is kind of cute, definitely roomy, and costs were low. read more

I had heard some good reviews about this place when it first opened so I definitely had to drop by and try it. Sadly to say I was pretty disappointed in how things ended up. First off, theres no service here, which is fine but I really couldn't tell by just walking through the door so that should be more explicit. Essentially the process is grabbing a menu at the front, ordering and then waiting for them to call your number. If you choose to eat in, then you just seat yourself, and you throw the away what's left and the box in the designated trash can. I ordered the soup dumplings and beef noodles to go. The soup dumplings were okay. The beef noodles had almost no flavor to it and the beef was extremely chewy. I also thought it was little pricey for how it ended up tasting. Theres also a language barrier with the cashier I had, which is not a problem for me however the owner had come out and gotten slightly aggressive and rude with me for not being able to understand everything the cashier was saying. I don't blame the cashier at all and was doing my best to understand, but the owner could've been more polite about it as opposed to being rude towards the customer. Maybe I just had a bad experience overall. I like to give places a second chance so I will be coming back and then updating my review if it goes a lot better. So as of right now, "service" was pretty poor and the food was not that good at all, pretty so-so in my opinion. read more

I like Blacksburg No. 1. I've been here a couple of times, and I think that after you figure out what you like, it's a win. The pricepoints are not bad at all, the food is hot, warm, and comforting, and they service is solid. These aren't the best noodles/soups I've had in my life, but they're definitely some of the better ones you can get in Blacksburg. The soup is comforting and really sticks to your bones, and the portion size is pretty good -- it will fill you up, but if you're not super hungry there will be some leftover. I never remember what I ordered last whenever I visit, but I always get some recommendations before I order, so I'll be more sure that I'm going to like what I eat. Inside the restaurant, you pay at the counter and there's plenty of seating inside (though things might be different in the age of COVID-19). This is one of my favorite hidden spots in Blacksburg. For a college student on a budget, this place can't be beat. It's only a short walk from campus and the portions are huge and cheap. I've gotten the pan-fried noodles every time and I've never been disappointed. My family always stops by when they visit and they love it too. However, my dad has warned me that the spicy noodles are not for the faint of heart. Other reviews have complained about the customer service or communication issues. It can be a bit difficult to read the menu but not impossible. Personally, I have never had any issues with service. The shop is never packed, so service is usually prompt. I love Chinese food. It's one of my favorites and I travel a lot and eat Chinese from different areas. This has to be the worst food I've ever eaten in my life. For starters, my egg roll was burnt black on the bottom very black and it was cold. I took one bite and threw those in the trash. I also had steamed fried dumplings. Those were OK. Not too bad but could've been a lot better. Also got sesame chicken, which is one of my favorites and I would have to say this is the worst sesame chicken. I've eaten in a long time looks good. After summer vacation I came back to Blacksburg for my fall semester. The first thing I heard from my friends were "yooooo did you hear about the new restaurants?" So during the summer Blacksburg had a bunch of new restaurants open up (Blacksburg No. 1 being one of them). So one Saturday morning my roommates and I went to try this new place which had hand pulled noodles. Now off the bat, I didn't like the service. Going in for the first time we were completely lost, and no one really tried to help us. So for the first timers reading this,I suggest to go straight to the counter, grab a menu and sit down. When your ready to order go back up to the counter to order. Then grab a seat somewhere and wait till they call out your number. They called our numbers out in Chinese and since we didn't know Chinese we were a little lost. However after a little bit if no one picks it up they would call the numbers out in English which is helpful. We eventually ordered, but our food came out at different times. Since we wanted to all eat together some of my roommates food got cold waiting. Eventually all of our food came out and we were ready to feast. Since this place was known for hand pulled noodles, I got the fatty lamb hand pulled noodles and a side order of shumai. I was not a fan of their dim sum. It was more on the expensive side and the taste just wasn't there. Now I was also a little skeptical of the fatty lamb hand pulled noodles. Since these noodles were very uniform almost looking like it was made through a machine. However they had a bounciness , which made me pretty happy. The broth was good and it coated the noodles very nicely. Overall, I would come back since the food is cheap and the noodles are good, but next time I'll probably just call it in and get to go to avoid the service. read more

I heard a lot of good reviews when this place opened that I had to try it. It's a very authentic Chinese noodle joint where you can get soups with your choice of protein or stir fried noodles. The first time I went I got the fatty beef soup and my cousin got the fried noodles with dumplings and both were very good! It's a refreshing flavor to come by in this area instead of the classic southern comfort flavors you'd get anywhere else around town. The spicy soup was actually really spicy for me but also really tasty. Next time I might try the "clean" soup and add my own spice. I went back and got the stir fried noodles another time and I prefer that over the soup! The pork belly noodles were delicious but the ratio of meat to noodles was off by a lot. To preface, this place is a hole in the wall, but given the prices, I was expecting it to be as good at Panda Express. We got general tso's chicken, pork belly hot pot, pan fried dumplings, and beef udon noodles. The beef with udon noodles had decent noodles, and long tough slices of beef. The dish was filled with an unnecessary amount of celery and red onion, needs more noodles. The general tso's chicken looked good, but the chicken was gristley. Lots of breading, barely any actual meat. The fried rice was bland, I dumped a bunch of soy sauce on it. I ordered the pork belly braised rice combo, and they gave me the hot pot. I didn't have a problem with that, but the pork belly was extremely fatty and chewy. The veggies were cooked fine. I ordered pan fried dumplings, and I don't think they gave me the right thing. They were filled with a mystery meat that reminded me of when I got frozen seafood bao buns at Oasis Market(big mistake). I tried this place after having subpar lo mein at Spicity, and I guess I'll have to learn to make my own Chinese food lol, since the burg seems to be lacking. Oh well, life goes on. read more

I had very high hopes for this place, judging from the early review that came out during their opening week. The manager (the lady that seemed like was in charge) was very, very rude. Kept yelling at both her customers and the workers when there was a simple mix up with our order. The yelling was very audible throughout the restaurant and made all the customers silent and uncomfortable. When I wanted to have a word with the manager after our meal, she promptly walked away, telling the cashier to "take care of this" in Chinese. We had the pork soup noodles and the chicken fried noodles with some Shumai. For the price, I do not believe it was worth it. The noodles were pretty comparable with the other Chinese Restaurants around Blacksburg, with a higher price tag. They were bland and nothing out of the ordinary. The Shumai tasted like the frozen ones you get at the world market. The restaurant has an open kitchen which you could see in. The 2 chefs working DID NOT have any gloves or hairnets on. The gentleman chef was grabbing ingredients by the handful (bare hands!) to put into the noodle soup before it was directly served to customers. All in all, the service from the staff were okay, unfortunately the person in charge was very rude and impatient at doing her job. The food was mediocre at best, and coupled with the sub-par sanitary protocols in place in their first few opening week, I could only wonder what the potential for this place is down the line. With all these facts taken into consideration I am giving this place a 1 out of 5 stars. Maybe in the near future we will give them another chance, but after today's ordeal, I am confident about the score I gave in the review. read more

We've been looking for authentic Chinese food in Blacksburg since we got here and we finally have it in town. I got the Rib Bridge Noodle soup and it was tasty. I had the original soup but you can choose the spicy version. The soup was well seasoned and the rib was tender. My foodie partner had the Original Hand Pulled Noodle Spicy Soup with beef and it was delicious as well. The noodles are flavorful and they absorb the flavors of the ingredients really well. Our son had the chicken stir fried noodles and he loved them. He also devoured the steamed dumplings and we had the black bean sesame balls which were sweet and delicious. We will definitely be coming back again. This is our new favorite chinese/noodle shop in town. Better than anything else in town. read more

My review of Blacksburg No. 1 has been a long time coming. If you're looking for the best noodles in the area, look no further. Since they opened last spring it has become my most frequented restaurant in Blacksburg. Both the udon noodles and the pan-fried noodles are just fantastic. The service is usually good, although I have had a few unfriendly encounters. Although I REALLY want to give them 5 stars, the main issue I have is inconsistency. I pretty much order one of the two same dishes every time, but it is literally always different. Both dishes are always supposed to come with a half of a delicious soy-marinated egg, and one time I went, I was just given half of a regular boiled egg! Such a letdown because the egg is part of what I look forward to. The vegetables are also always completely different--sometimes there's cabbage, sometimes tofu, sometimes potatoes; they're also sometimes very saucy but sometimes very dry, and though it typically tastes great, it's better when you know what quality to expect. The spice level also varies like crazy--I always order the medium spice level and sometimes it tastes more like mild and sometimes it burns my mouth off! The broth of the soup had too much spice and oil to really taste the broth, while the pork belly was average. The noodles though were well made and very good. I was able to try my friends shumai, which was subpar as it seemed processed. Also, the service, such as the cash register attendant, seemed reluctant to help my group of friends, as we were new customers. It was not a very welcoming environment upon entrance.
