Moldy bread (before their announced "expiry date")
    Yu X.

The food inspection agency should really strictly look at this stupid supermarket. In recent two years, they kept selling rotten meat, rotten shrimp, moldy bread, expired bakeries etc. My whole family got food poisoned from their cooked shrimp and we each only ate one shrimp (stopped eating before we realize it was rotten). We kept the shrimp in our freezer all the time for a couple of weeks so there was no storage issue of our own. This food poisoning further triggered my heart attack. The next day I was eating their bread, and noticed that the half bread I ate was moldy (again it was too late before I realize). I would ban this supermarket and strongly recommend any of you to not buy raw products from this supermarket. It can severely affects your health.

This T&T location at the corner of Promenade Mall is a one-stop-shop for all your grocery needs. Great location with abundant free parking. Their aisles are a treasure trove of produce, meat, seafood, and more - lots of fully cooked meal options too. There's also a quaint corner for kitchenware and beauty products. Though prices might nudge a bit higher compared to other smaller Chinese supermarkets, T&T's well-stocked shelves and tidiness somewhat helps soften the blow to your wallet. Seeking assistance can be a bit hard though.

What's not to like...from the hot food section to the delicious looking bakery. Fresh produce, meat, poultry and seafood. Very well organized and easy to find what you are looking for. Lots of parking spaces. The place doesn't disappoint :-D

Drink with a straw or use a spoon?

I did not have any staff interaction this time but I noticed that a fellow shopper was asking a staff member a question. The customer asked something and the staff pointed to an item in the freezer. The customer had another question to clarify but by then the staff was answering but also mumbling the answer while walking away. This left the customer dumbfounded and without a clear answer to their question. To me, T&T isn't known for the same type and level of service as you would find in a Caucasian supermarket, especially for non Cantonese and mandarin speakers. When entering the site from the mall there's the prepared food section and there are premade drinks on a bed of ice. I noticed a drink that I haven't seen before, tofu pudding with tapioca pearls. Normally this dessert, minus the pearls, is eaten with a spoon from a bowl. My question is: are you supposed to use a bubble tea straw for this drink or a spoon?? While browsing I noticed that there were packages of boneless chicken feet and baby pork uteruses. I've never seen these before at any other T&T's.

Probably one of the quieter T&T supermarkets in the city and it is slightly smaller in size compared to the location at steeles/warden. However it serves as an important and extensive Asian grocery store in the area. There is an entrance to the supermarket via the mall and the street. There is a good sized cooked food section and today we grabbed some takeout dim sum. Not the best dim sum in the city, but it satisfies the craving when many dim sum restaurants are closed or operating at limited capacity at the moment. The outside dumpling wrapper was a bit thick.

The T&T Supermarket inside the Promenade Mall is the first T&T location in the GTA area. I also find it is not as nice as the newly opened one. The main problem is the aisle is so narrow. It is so hard to push your shopping carts around without bumming into everything! Aside from that, it is still as good and busy as the other T&T locations! I love to shop here when I am in the area.

reduced priced bbq pork that tasted weird.
    O C.

There was a sale of the BBQ pork (Char Siu/叉烧肉) last week and I bought a box thinking it was the usual red/sweet BBQ pork Char Siu recipe that I have always bought at T&T supermarket. To my surprise upon buying a box and tasting it at home I realize I was tricked into buying this meat on sale. We opened the box of the BBQ pork (叉烧肉) for dinner and we tasted it and noticed it tasted pretty weird. It tasted like it was marinaded in Lou Mei (滷味). There was a strong five spice aroma and we could not eat this for dinner because of how repulsive the taste was. This is not how Char Siu is supposed to taste and T&T supermarket knew this and decided to sell boxes of it at reduced price tricking people in thinking that this is BBQ pork Char Siu. This is totally an example of misleading sales tactics and fraudulent misrepresentation. I was extremely disappointed that my local T&T supermarket knew about this issue, and decided to sell it reduced price instead of throwing it to the garbage even though this would be considered out of spec and should not be considered eligible for sale. This is the second time where I have bought BBQ pork from this location and was extremely disappointed with the quality of the food. The other time I bought BBQ pork (燒肉) from this location the box was 75% fat and was considered inedible but the chef still sold it to me when I specifically asked for a lean cut. I only discovered when it was time for dinner that I had been sold this poor quality food after noticing piece after piece was literally FAT. I literally had to drive back there in the middle of my dinner to exchange it for another box. And now, I am done with returning to the store to exchange my food and wasting my gas. It's not worth it. They don't have anything remotely close to quality control in their kitchen, especially when it comes to their company trying to minimize cost. I sent a complaint to their customer service department and got a BS response saying they were doing a promotion for their BBQ pork using natural ingredients/food colouring, and antibiotic free pork. Oh really, so this was not some mess up by the kitchen, but you guys intentionally were trying to sell off this crap food without being transparent and upfront to customers. Thanks for letting me know after you pocketted my money by tricking me into thinking this was char siu.

I went here last Saturday night to buy Chinese broccoli, watermelon, and romaine hearts and was assisted by three different staff members. Both of them mentioned they had been on duty since that noon and yet still displayed a cheery disposition and phenomenal level of customer service throughout. I certainly wanted to give a big thumb up to these employees.

The cleaner and fresher experience compared to the Hong Tai supermarket chains and a much more elaborate selection of meat and seafood. Fresh white tilapia and the seafood tanks in general are kept very clean without the fishy presence of gills and fish guts lingering in your nose. Service of 'clean and cut' also available, I'm not too sure if they fillet at a cost or not though. They have fresh oysters in plastic containers and precut fish of the day(cheaper and about to get chucked out) and a long selection of imported frozen fish and the more exotic like sea turtle. I come here for the poultry selection as well. So many options with the cut selection of the chicken parts. Chicken breast is at better quality and expect it to be a bit more expensive than the average chinese supermarkets but inline with the quality offered at Costco. It gets a bit pricier with the fresh produce as well, but weekly sales from cooking oil to exotic fruits is worth the visit. This location also houses quite an extensive filipino selection from chips, sweets, condiments, drinks and canned goods. Daily specials are available in their HOT FOOD selection like spicy shrimp, gazillion chicken dishes, fried veggies, the roasted pork and duck section, sushi and dessert section. Smartly placed towards the end of your errand before heading to the cashier as by this time, an appetite has been strategically created by the power of effective marketing.

    6 pound lobster

The five stars is for the seafood section, it's incredible. Really clean area, no fishy smell. Mainly because it's almost all live in these huge tanks. Not only would I say this is the best place to buy fresh seafood in the GTA, but it's much cheaper than most seafood markets. Once I got a six pound lobster, that was so lively, I could barely hold onto it. Another time I got a pound of live prawns, cost me six bucks!

They have a self-serve hot bar now! And as such, their prepared foods are immeasurably better and cheaper. I wholeheartedly approve.

We have tried a few places in and around Markham that sell Wagyu, but non of them blew us away. I decided to do a random search for Japanese Butchers and Wagyu and came across FãMu Inc. which is listed as "The only Japanese Butcher in Ontario". FãMu is the Japanese pronunciation of farm. They are all about animals that are pasture or free-run, raised without chemicals, antibiotics, hormones or animal bi-products. Located in J Town, an indoor/outdoor mall of Japanese businesses located On Steeles Avenue E near Woodbine in Markham. (LOVED the shops at J Town!!). We have had several great experiences with this shop since our first visit 9 months ago. Everyone in shop is very helpful and knowledgeable about all of the cuts they sell. Our first try of FãMu we purchased the A5 Wagyu Miyazaki Striploin. BBQ'd on the grill for 2 min on each side (as per the butchers recommendation), the cuts were bbq'd to perfection and just melted in our mouths. I have never eaten a steak anywhere that was so perfectly marbled and so tender. I would say it was easily one of the best steaks I have ever had! The next would be the Australian Wagyu Ribeye we picked up (15oz cuts). A little on the pricey side, but WOW, you get what you pay for and no better way to indulge in a perfect steak bbq. Some of the cuts of Japanese Wagyu they sell are: Kobe - A5 Kuromame Nagi - A5 Furano - A5 Miyazaki (Miyazakigyu)- A5 Hokkaido (Tokachi) - A5 Various Regions Of Japan - A4 Plus ~ Australian Wagyu, US Wagyu, Chicken, Berkshire Pork, Wagyu burgers and Wagyu slices for Sukiyaki Hot Pots and more! During 2 of our recent visits we also tried their Double Wagyu Beef Bowl. Thinly sliced pieces of Wagyu seasoned with in store made terriyaki/soy sauce over a bed of steamed rice. Small portion for the cost, but filling and THE most tender beef bowl you will ever try! Not sure about which cut to try, visit their website and you can get detailed info on each cut, you can also stop in and ask or order online. In shop everyone is very warm, friendly and happy to help if you have any questions.
