Getting here you really need a car as it is not idealistic to take public transit since there's not a station nearby. This is a massive warehouse. The front area has a small produce selection, massive frozen choices and some dry goods on the other side. The back side mainly consists of bulk items for those that run shops. It's highly recommended to come earlier because according to some friends, there have been days where just about everything was out of stock. So do be aware of this. There's a selection of vegetables, tofus, meats, desserts in the fresh produce. The frozen section is incredibly massive and has just about everything you are looking for! Dumplings, cakes, meats, fish balls of all sorts, etc. The dry goods have a nice variety of noodles, sauces, spices and snacks! As of right now they are rather short on staff so the queue is a pretty long at the moment! Overall pretty good first impression since I came and everything is well stocked. Definitely a place to check out!

But now I dont have to because the guys of Holloway Fisheries bring you a lot of fresh fish, straight from the ocean (via Billingsate Fish Market ;-) ) for a reasonable price. No posh counter, just the fish in styrofoam boxes and ice. Happy to sell you just one fish or a whole lot and happy to clean the fish as you like it (pan ready). What they have on offer changes daily and depends on what they expect to sell. So for sushi quality tuna you better try on Thursday or Friday early in the day because these are the days they sell this the most (to restaurants). Cash only, but there is a cash machine on the opposite side of the road. They are the first shop at the entrance of the market.

I've been here a few times and always bought the seafood for the paella I always cook for the annual BBQ (and yes it's always a hit!). I can buy enough to feed 15 for around £15 (squid, king prawn, mussels) with a typical largish fish at about £3-4 though these are more much bigger than their supermarket equivalents. If you ask them they will also happily clean and prepare the fish for you. They even have fish heads if you want to make a stock. Apart from the paella ingredients I've also bought red snapper and scallops without any complaints. The great service and a decent range means that I will always come here and it certainly beats an early morning trek to Billingsgate.

There was also another stand that had fruit in a cup with chocolate. Our best deal were some arepas that were half off because it was closing time and they wanted to get rid of them. I live pretty near Billingsgate. Have done for about 8 years. I've been once. I went for an article I was writing and had a great time (met a fisherman who hated fish - go figure), but once was enough for me. I do not do well with 6am starts. And the last thing I feel like pre-coffee is buying seafood. But I like cooking. I like making tasty things. I like having fresh food that didn't cost the earth in the supermarket (although my local fishmonger is also awesome). I basically want all the good stuff, delivered to my door. Marky Market does that. Not just to your door, but to your office too. I live so close to Billingsgate that I'd have had a very early wake-up call (Mark starts his day at 2:30 am - I'm not even asleep by then a lot of the time). So Qype laughed at me when I got half a kilo of samphire delivered to their office. I made tasty salads with crayfish for a party, everyone was impressed. Even shared some in the pub with some other Qypers. They were happy too. I'll use Marky Market for any special occasion. If you don't like early starts and you like tasty food, you should too.
