The black pork which was sumptuous.

We had dinner here during the week. It is a gin bar with over a hundred different types of gin, and a gin sommelier to assist you in choosing the gin that suits you. You choose by smell, rather than tasting. Highly recommend the Sharish gin which is Portugeuse. Note that the gin you select will be served to you as a gin and tonic cocktail garnished with appropriate fruits and spices. For dinner we had the duck and the pork. The pork was superb and was prepared like pork belly schnitzel. The service was attentive and efficient. Even though there was a large party of ten dominating the restaurant, we did not feel at all neglected.

I thought this place was a little pricier than advertised. The food is good, but a bit expensive. The place itself is very modern and quirky, you'll definitely notice when you step in. They have a large restaurant area and a bar in the back where the specialize in Gin. I'm not a huge gin fan, but I hear it's a must try here. The staff is friendly and speak perfect English. I got the steak. It's a healthy portion and it comes with fries. More fries than I was able to eat. The steak was perfectly cooked. Melted in my mouth and had great flavors. It comes with a blue cheese dip, that wasn't the typical overpowering blue cheese flavor I'm used to. All in all a great meal at a very interesting restaurant, but a little too pricey for me.

Well this is tied for the best resultant experience in 10 days of Portugal. Service was good and the food was amazing. Burrata cheese with tomatoes and avacado is soft rich and fresh. The tuna was creative and perfect. It was lightly cooked and served i a wonderful sauce that was based on soy sauce and sesame seeds with small bits of broccoli and a few mild chilies. The texture of the tuna was tender and the salty souse pulled the dish together. Last we shared chocolate cake and a dulce de leche type ice cream. Oh yeah lovely outside seating in Lisbon too

This is a funky and modern place in the heart of Lisbon and I was nearby and in need of lunch. Sitting on your own for lunch can feel like a lonely experience at times, but not in Taberna Moderna. The staff were friendly, as were the other diners. A real pleasure for someone in a big city. I thought that tapas was probably the right way to go. Speaking to my waiter, it was obvious that he knew his stuff, so I leaned on his experience. I ordered the warm scallops with salad and chèvre ice cream because it sounded like a combination that would work. How right I was! Every bite was perfect. To continue on the seafood theme, I chose tuna tataki with floral salad and it went perfectly with the scallops. The tuna was cooked just right, showing a talented chef. The tender Iberian pork meat with peppers and potatoes was my third choice of tapas. I knew it would just melt in the mouth. This is a classic tapas and one I often go for but it is rarely cooked as well as this. After all of this I was at one with the world. Sitting in the modern style restaurant and looking at the world passing by was an absolute satisfaction. I felt that the only thing that could make it better was a dessert. I went for something traditional - the paezinhos de ló, a typical sponge cake from Portugal and it topped off a great meal.

This is a truly GOOD restaurant. Sorry Lisbon, but most of the restaurants I've been to here have had very bland, but this place is great!

Truly great food. Please go here and avoid the places in the center/ Rua De Prata area. Most places are very bland plain baked/boiled food but this place was amazing. Definitely go!

Fantastic modern Portuguese typical dishes with a twist. The dining room has an industrial look and table layout is with unmatching plates, chairs and glasses. 'Love that! The cod dish with corn crumble with fig was spectacular and shrimp black rice with octupos paired with vinho verde... would be back definitely.

Wonderful meal from start to finish! We began with cocktails- Basil Smash and Raw Ginger. I had the Smash and it was delightful and my fiancé found his drink to be great too. The dishes are all meant to be shared with generous proportions. We had the burrata and then the duck breast. Finished off with the sweet milk and ice cream dessert. All were delicious. Ambiance and service was top notch too.

The codfish dumpling fusion was a pleasant surprise, creamy on the inside and a nice chewy gyoza wrapper. The octopus rice was good too. A decent amount of octopus with rice in a smoked bell pepper sauce. I was disappointed by the seafood pasta soup though. I liked the mussels, but the shrimp and the clams weren't the freshest. The clams were a little mushy. It had a nice seafood stock flavor, but definitely could have used more salt and seasoning. We had mixed service from one of the female servers.

We each ordered a glass of 20 year port to celebrate my birthday and the staff overheard and brought a complimentary rich chocolate dessert. Very enjoyable meal all the way around.

It's rotisserie chicken doused with a spicy hot sauce so what's not to like? I knew it was a Portuguese-originated dish, so I looked for a place famous for it. Here on a Sunday evening, there was quite a queue extending up the cobblestone alley, so I realized this must be the place. Although it was at least thirty people deep, it didn't take more than twenty minutes for Jamie W and me to secure a table upstairs. It was a homestyle dining room set-up that hovered between cozy and crowded depending on the fluctuating volume level. Interestingly all the servers were male, and while ours was the most junior, he consciously followed the behavior of his veteran brethren. There was no question about our main course, the 13,5€ Frango Assado No Espeto (Roast Chicken on the Spit) (Photo 7). It was tender and succulent enough albeit a bit under seasoned, all the more reason to pour a liberal dose of the piri piri sauce (Photo 8). Our sides were simple but shareable, the 3,2€ Batata Fritta (French Fries) (Photo 9) and the 4,3€ Salada Mista (Mixed Salad) (Photo 10). Both were fine, though we really wanted to try their Cream Spinach. They were already out of it in the kitchen. We were quite satisfied nonetheless, and their service pretty much worked like clockwork. Jamie and I agreed we'd definitely come back if the passion for poultry strikes us on a return trip to Lisbon. In the meanwhile, I'll just do a run to Costco, buy a rotisserie chicken, and dream of Portugal. A small line of one or two groups at a time formed throughout the night. We were seated outside and there was a street performer with an acoustic guitar - def added some great vibes to the night. It was a chilly December night but the heater provided *just enough* warmth. We ordered the codfish cakes which were alright - nothing too special. Since it was a little cold out, I also ordered the chicken broth. It was bland, but good in its own way. There was some rice and chicken bits in it that tasted really good. The rotisserie chicken that they are known for was EXTREMELY salty. We were a group of 6 and ordered 2.5 rotisserie chicken (so 5 pieces) but this was actually way too much. It's a little better (but still salty) if you don't eat the skin, but that's the best part given how crispy it was! I tried to drown out the saltiness by using the piri piri sauce and it helped a little bit... but biting into the chicken meant biting into the undissolved salt bits. Given how salty it was, we could not finish it at all and left behind 3 pieces. Service itself was meh. They made sure to inform us that the tip was not included in the bill.

He will talk to you for hours and teach you about food and wine and culture and talk about the history of food and how it came to be in Portugal. I loved it. I learned so much. I aspire, as an American, to learn from and look up to other cultures. I feel very honored to have dined in a restaurant managed by him on our trip to Portugal. I'm going to recommend to our travel coordinator to add this restaurant to the Google map recommendations list because more people need to go to this place - they need more tables, more space, because I'm convinced this is such a hidden gem that should be exposed to the masses to enjoy! We visited several wineries and this restaurant had the best wine - bar none! The fish, a fish I hadn't tried before, was deliciously seasoned, falls apart with the fork, the creamy rice was just divine. I normally will never eat little cherry/grape tomatoes - ever - but the perfect bite of fish, creamy rice, and a tomato was... perfection. The menu is deeply curated; flavors - textures - wines that make sense. You can tell Frederico what you normally like and he 100% knows what wines he has that you will love. The tomato, orange, ham, salad, was absolutely balanced and delicious. I'm so grateful that our first trip to Portugal we got to meet Frederico and dine with these wonderful people who love food and wine as much as us. I'll never forget it as long as I live.
