What a magnificent experience! Our meal here was a true highlight of our two weeks in Portugal. We walked by early on a Friday evening and asked about making a reservation in the outdoor patio area. Most tables were already spoken for - just two small tables left without reservations. You know when they're all taken as each reserved table will have a small framed piece of artwork with the name for the reservation written on the glass. We came back at our allotted time and found our name marking the spot. A group of 4 is a great number to come with as courses are brought one at a time and portioned for sharing among the group. This worked so well for us as we got to taste multiple things and everything was delicious. At first you are served marinated tomatoes with bread - complimentary, no extra charge. For our main courses we tried the sesame tuna, octopus with black rice, homemade pasta with cream and truffle, and duck with Jerusalem artichoke chips. Each course was better than the last until we got to the duck which was excellent but not as much of a superstar as the others. The biggest standout for me was the octopus, which was presented in two ways, as large battered pieces that were very tender on the edge of the dish, and then smaller pieces of octopus mixed into the rice, which had a citrusy tang to it and was just so rich and satisfying. The service was outstanding, with everything appearing just as we needed it or had questions. At the end it was hard to resist trying some dessert as the mains had been fairly unique and really tasty - we got a trip of sorbets and the fried cream which sounded like something different and was also very good and added to the experience! We had dinner here during the week. It is a gin bar with over a hundred different types of gin, and a gin sommelier to assist you in choosing the gin that suits you. You choose by smell, rather than tasting. Highly recommend the Sharish gin which is Portugeuse. Note that the gin you select will be served to you as a gin and tonic cocktail garnished with appropriate fruits and spices. For dinner we had the duck and the pork. The pork was superb and was prepared like pork belly schnitzel. The service was attentive and efficient. Even though there was a large party of ten dominating the restaurant, we did not feel at all neglected. read more

This place confused us. They want you share plates but the sizes are such that each is an entree and they come out at different times. This wouldn't be too big of a deal but then the options are difficult to find that give you a complete meal, meaning protein, starch, vegetables. We ended up with creamed rice and the black pig pork. Just makes for an odd meal. If you're trying to do a tapas thing, then do it and let us order lots of plates otherwise plate the entrees properly. The food was good so there is that. Now, about the server..... nothing good here. We definitely got the wrong one tonight! The man who seated us couldn't have been nicer and I watched as he attended his tables well. We weren't one of those. The woman who "served" us came by twice in over 2:00. I do not think she wanted to be there. After sitting with nothing to drink and no food in front of us for :30 I finally got up, chased her down and told her we wanted the check. We would have liked more to drink and a dessert. Not to be. I get the relaxed dinner and I appreciate not being bothered constantly but being ignored and abandoned isn't good either. The couple that sat down shortly after we did was getting the same poor service so I don't think it was personal. I'm guessing either understaffed or incompetent. I thought this place was a little pricier than advertised. The food is good, but a bit expensive. The place itself is very modern and quirky, you'll definitely notice when you step in. They have a large restaurant area and a bar in the back where the specialize in Gin. I'm not a huge gin fan, but I hear it's a must try here. The staff is friendly and speak perfect English. I got the steak. It's a healthy portion and it comes with fries. More fries than I was able to eat. The steak was perfectly cooked. Melted in my mouth and had great flavors. It comes with a blue cheese dip, that wasn't the typical overpowering blue cheese flavor I'm used to. All in all a great meal at a very interesting restaurant, but a little too pricey for me. read more

Well this is tied for the best resultant experience in 10 days of Portugal. Service was good and the food was amazing. Burrata cheese with tomatoes and avacado is soft rich and fresh. The tuna was creative and perfect. It was lightly cooked and served i a wonderful sauce that was based on soy sauce and sesame seeds with small bits of broccoli and a few mild chilies. The texture of the tuna was tender and the salty souse pulled the dish together. Last we shared chocolate cake and a dulce de leche type ice cream. This was the best restaurant we tried in Lisbon. We went on a week night and the restaurant was mostly empty. We ordered 4 dishes to share and they were excellent. The meat was perfectly cooked and it is obvious that they know what they are doing with food. The portions aren't huge for the price. The manager also created gin & tonics for us based off of what we liked and they were delicious. Definitely a place that deserves to be much busier than it was. We spent 200€ for 4 people and we would do it again tomorrow if we could. read more

This is a funky and modern place in the heart of Lisbon and I was nearby and in need of lunch. Sitting on your own for lunch can feel like a lonely experience at times, but not in Taberna Moderna. The staff were friendly, as were the other diners. A real pleasure for someone in a big city. I thought that tapas was probably the right way to go. Speaking to my waiter, it was obvious that he knew his stuff, so I leaned on his experience. I ordered the warm scallops with salad and chèvre ice cream because it sounded like a combination that would work. How right I was! Every bite was perfect. To continue on the seafood theme, I chose tuna tataki with floral salad and it went perfectly with the scallops. The tuna was cooked just right, showing a talented chef. The tender Iberian pork meat with peppers and potatoes was my third choice of tapas. I knew it would just melt in the mouth. This is a classic tapas and one I often go for but it is rarely cooked as well as this. After all of this I was at one with the world. Sitting in the modern style restaurant and looking at the world passing by was an absolute satisfaction. I felt that the only thing that could make it better was a dessert. I went for something traditional - the paezinhos de ló, a typical sponge cake from Portugal and it topped off a great meal. read more

We had a fabulous meal here. I recommend calling ahead - it was about 9 pm on a Monday and pretty well packed. We used the online request feature, which did work but they were definitely surprised to receive one that way. The service was top notch and our waiter helped us pick the perfect vino verde to accompany seafood. We ordered three shared plates for two people and it was too much food - it's family style, not tapas. Oops. I'm not ashamed to admit we ate most of it anyone because it was just that good. Wonderful meal from start to finish! We began with cocktails- Basil Smash and Raw Ginger. I had the Smash and it was delightful and my fiancé found his drink to be great too. The dishes are all meant to be shared with generous proportions. We had the burrata and then the duck breast. Finished off with the sweet milk and ice cream dessert. All were delicious. Had a wonderful meal! Being Americans we arrived right as they opened so we were the only ones dining for the first 45 minutes or so but it quickly filled up. MADE ME SICK AS A DOG Writing this review after a bad night being sick in my hotel and waking the other guests. It was the octopus I reckon - to add insult I paid 17EUR for a tapas size portion. All portions are this size so you will have to spend 100EUR to feel anything approaching full. At this price many of the Michelin star restaurants are in reach so best to treat yourself. I wanted to like this place, nobody goes out for a meal and wants to write a bad review but food hygiene and very poor value meal means I will never return. I should be grateful this poisonous muck was a small portion, a bigger portion would have kept me in bed for longer. The management response on Tripadvisor was to suggest something else made me sick and that I ought to eat at cheap buffets in future - not very sympathetic are they? read more

I ordered a cod dish, a scallop dish, and an octopus dish. A lot of seafood but standard for a Lisbon meal. The food tasted good but was very rich and oily. Furthermore the restaurant was fairly empty although it was dinner on Saturday. Regardless i was excited to eat there. I ended up getting sick that night into the next day. I emailed the restaurant to notify without being aggressive and still thanking them. They never wrote back, which I consider rude. I would recommend staying away from this place for anyone with a light stomach or scared of getting sick. It wasn't worth losing two days. read more

When I was on holiday in Lisboa, already a few months ago, this place stole my heart. We walked by in the afternoon when the restaurant was not open for dinner, but we could make a reservation and it was a good idea to make one! Later that night we stumbled in a full Taberna Moderna, but the atmosphere was nice and relaxed. The place is so nicely decorated: meditteranean colours, wooden floor, different kind of plates on the table, dimmed light and so on. A waiter came at our table to explain their concept: from the menu you can chose one or more dishes, and the idea was to drink it with a special made gin (like normally you would drink wine). Gin was something new for me, but the waiter made me very enthusiastic about it and I let him decide which gin I should drink. He came back with the most appetizing drink, a bit sour and bitter but most of all refreshing and a hint of sweetness. From 'the house' we got some fresh bread and sliced tomatoes in oil. We ordered two fish dishes: some baked ones and risotto with ink and squid. Oh, it was so delicious! Creamy, tasteful, my mouth waters when I think back to it. Truly worth going to this place! Spent two weeks in Lisbon and Taberna Moderna was by far the best food I had. Fusion of Portuguese and Nuvo Cuisine. Excellent knowledgeable wait staff and very friendly owner. It was a pleasure to combine the food with the gin drinks and not the typical wine/food combinations. I was very lucky because this restaurant was next door to the hotel I stayed at. I ate there almost every night and was never disappointed. Not to be missed when in Lisbon if you appreciate great food.
