I've gone here twice. The first time, I got the classic tonkotsu ramen, it was spectacular. However, the last time I went, I got the same soup and it was completely bland. They are a bit inconsistent in the taste of their food in this way. The chicken bao buns were also pretty bland at first, but with one of their sauces they were pretty great. If you need a ramen fix, this place is a decent option, but nothing spectacular. We went this past Sunday (1/19/17) and split an order of the Spicy Edamame (READ: Definitely very spicy, but tasty) and I chose the Tonkatsu Ramen (Pork Broth). The broth was mild, which was a nice compliment to the Spicy Edamame, but was overall a little bland. Portion size was good, but not huge. You get a medium-large bowl with a good amount of meat, noodles, and veggies, though I almost wish there was more broth. Service was mediocre. We came on a Sunday night around 7 and it was clear the restaurant was under staffed (only two wait staff for the whole restaurant, one who was also working in the kitchen half the time). It took several minutes for us to be seated at a clean table (even though there were open, unreserved tables when we came in) and several more to be acknowledged by a waiter, get water, and then have our order taken. I'm usually not a huge stickler for service, but when you pay $15 for Ramen (and $1-2 extra per each additional topping), you expect the basics to be covered. With tip, you've paid $20+ each, which just isn't worth it for the quality and portion you receive here. My top three tips: 1) Keep track of any extra toppings you add, it can add up! I wouldn't consider this place to be a bargain by any stretch 2) Eat the Spicy Edamame slowly 3) Lighting is harsh near the front of the restaurant and near the kitchen due to the fluorescents, avoid those tables if you have the option. read more

So I struggled between giving it 3 or 4 stars. While the experience was excellent and the ramen was good, it didn't compare to really good ramen. THe eggs was perfectly cooked, but believe it or not, I found the whole bowl a little on the small size. My fiancée and I have been here a number of times as it's the only ramen place in Evanston. The ramen and other offerings are all decent, but it's really expensive (~$20) in comparison to places in Chicago proper and the West Coast. The pork belly doesn't seem to be the same quality as we've had most other places and you cannot substitute anything in its place without an additional charge, which is unfortunate. Place was pretty empty early on a Friday night, but that made for easy street parking. We started with the Chicken Karage which wound up being my favorite part of the meal. The spicy aoli sauce complimented the fried chicken nuggets perfectly. Both my dining partner and I choose the Veggie Miso Ramen and added bok choy, egg and garlic. So happy to have a ramen shop here in Evanston! My table ordered the brussel sprout and Gyoza to start, and I ordered the tonkotsu ramen. I could eat the brussel sprouts every day! Very rich, delicious broth. They also have a punch card system, in which after your tenth ramen you get one free! However, the seating is super uncomfortable: all high tops. Also, each additional topping is $1+ dollar, which kinda sucks because an additional topping is like 1/2 an egg, a piece of bok choy, etc, very minuscule. read more

I really don't care that much for the olympics themselves. Might catch a swimming event if I can but wouldn't be torn up either which way if it turns out I never enter an Olympic arena while there. Even though it's the first Ramen place in Evanston and I was so excited to try it, the experience here does not worth the $ at all. First, the service is really bad. The waitresses always have a poker face, and they are very impatient to customers' basic needs or questions. I came here twice, one was with a friend, another time was by myself. The waitresses seemed to be very careless to any customer who came alone. The different treatments between a group of people and a person were not only shown in their attitudes, but also in the services they provided. When I came alone, no one even checked my table or mentioned the promotion that they have kept advertising to other tables. When I left, none of the waitresses said goodbye, even though they were just standing and watching. Second and the most importantly, the ramen is so plain that I'd rather drive an hour to many other good Ramen places in Chicago downtown. The dishes' size is really small and the ingredients are way too simple. I regretted so bad on what I've just eaten the time I finished my dishes without a choice. Never come back here. Just moved to the area and it was rainy and hubby had a day off. It was noon on a Thursday. Many nearby ramen places only seem to open later in the day so we went here. SOOO happy we did. Terrible customer service. Absolutely not worth it. We ordered via PostMates, who delivered an hour and a half late. The ramen was ice cold, and they refused to make it again when we asked them about it. They tried to say that they didn't contract with PostMates. Well... we could order through their site. I'd say that would indicate a business relationship. They gave the delivery person the food that sat there for *an hour and a half.* RAMEN that sat there an hour and a half. Table To Stix should have remade the food. I've worked in food service before - even Burger King would remake the order. Ramen doesn't cost that much to make. I had been craving some ramen all week, but there's really no where near me that has good ramen. I happened to be visiting a friend in Evanston who told me about this place. It's pretty great. I had the spicy miso ramen and substituted brown mushrooms for the pork belly. The broth could have been richer; it was a little one note for me, but it was warm and had a nice kick without being too spicy. The noodles were perfect and chewy without being overcooked. Came here with my brother to get our ramen fix. We started with some edamame and the pork belly buns. The pork buns were awesome! Wish we got more than one each for the plate. I tried the tonkotsu ramen, which was pretty good. It was a good sized portion and had good flavor, but I wasn't overly blown away. It at least satisfied our fix! I'd give 4 stars for just the food, but giving it a 3 because of the ambiance. I don't mind that it's a smaller space, but it was loud and occasionally hard to hear my brother, who was sitting right next to me. We also sat at the table right next to the door so the chilly breeze was constantly coming in. We got there just after 6 and I'm glad we did because people will continually pouring in the entire time we were there. All in all, I'd come back to get a ramen fix and try the other types. So this place isn't really well advertised. I just see it across the street every time I go to Bennisons. I didn't like the other ramebn place I went to, so I decided to try this one. The ramen was kinda pricey. I think the lowest price was $15. I chose a $15 one and brought it back to work. I was really surprised at how good it was. Also, some of those Asian ingredients are expensive. For the price, yumminess and speediness, the $15 was worth it to me. Will come back. read more

Table to Stix is a roughly one-year-old ramen shop in downtown Evanston. The place is fairly small, with about a dozen tables. I've been here (I think) three times at this point. The first two times I had the tonkatsu ramen. It's very good, fatty and porky without being too salty. It comes with a lot of garnishes and a ton of noodles, so it's very filling. But they have a la carte extra garnishes if anything else tickles your fancy. The shoyu ramen, which I got the most recent time, is not as good. It's blander, waterier, and doesn't have the meaty, smokey, umami flavor the tonkatsu has. Stick to the pork (or maybe the miso ramen if meat's not your thing). The spicy edamame are quite good. Just on the verge of being over-garlicked and oversalted, but if you split a bowl with one or two other people, you can handle it (just bring breathmints for afterwards). Portions are really big. Don't fill up on appetizers too much, because the ramen will leave you in a food coma. read more

Unlike Chicago, the L.A. Ramen scene is fast paced and your experience with the food you eat is known to you as soon as you look at the dish. This anticipation of taste can ruin or belittle an experience. As someone who has eaten Ramen in Japan and L.A. I would never expect Shoyu Ramen to be a dish with softer qualities. Yet my experience with Table To Stix was a Venusian and delightful experience. Eating here caused me to step out of my analytical mind for once and feel, Shoyu Ramen in a state of flow. Think about how rare it is, that we eat something so exquisite that it mimics creativity, or the feeling of time passing. What we have here is either a genius attempt to lure the unsuspecting guy with a beard, or something that is so good, the chef decided to let it speak entirely for itself and just freak out all the young people, who I'm sure will become slowly addicted and skip their communications class for their new lunch in a dream. In a nutshell, Table To Stix makes west coast Shoyu taste like saltwater in comparison. The modern interior is small with about 6-8 tables and acoustically horrible. A boisterous table will give others a headache as this tiny place (but not intimate) can get loud. The ramen is expensive at $15 and I feel smaller than other joints. 2 pork buns are $7 - tasty but not worth it. The Tonkotsu ramen's broth wasn't as rich as other ramen joints and actually greasier. They also put canned corn in it and the texture just threw it off. If you really like Oiistar or Jinya, you will be disappointed with this place. read more

After trying Furious Spoon, I can now say that at least out of these two, this place is the best (and possibly one of the very best Ramen places in Chicago-area). They have two very tasty options I have tried: Spicy Ramen and the Tomkatsu. What made this place better than it's more popular sister is that it tasted fresher and less oily/greasy. Furious Spoon made me feel bad after eating it, like I had eaten a greasy cheat meal. Table to Stix was just so delicious and fresh. The bowls are huge servings and very filling. Great ramen! Not quite 5 star taste, but solid every time. My favorite is the Modern Tonkatsu add garlic and brussel sprouts. And when they add the garlic, oh my, they do not mess around. Not a huge fan of the soy based broth ramen but it was still pretty good. I love the toppings and they are consistently good. The noodles are solid too, though I've had better. This place really has the broth down pat and some creative toppings to go with it. Price is on par for the area and they are good with take out. Wish this place did Uber Eats.
