To preface my review, I am from Texas and I have incredibly HIGH standards when it comes to tacos. I had yet to find a taco joint up here that I absolutely love, until yesterday! That said, I decided to give Taco Rock a try while I was out with friends, because they had an extensive menu that ranged from tacos, to nachos, and sides like elote! Not only were the vibes immaculate, but the food exceeded my expectations. I loved that there was a full staffed bar and a walk up / order food bar. I appreciated the touch screen order menus up at the front, because I could take my time and browse without feeling pressured. The restaurant played sports on the tv, as well as music videos to accompany the early 2000s rock/ alternative! They also had a salsa bar (although it was more like hot sauce). I ordered two vegetarian tacos, the Asian fusion general Tso's taco, the fried avocado taco, and the elote. All I have to saw is WOW! Everything I ate was incredibly good. I was shocked at how tasty and crispy both my avocado and cauliflower were. The tacos are good but needed a little extra spice, so I threw on some of those salsas and it was perfection! Also, the elote? Incredible. It was soooo good despite being a little messy. Taco Rock got this Texan's stamp of approval! Everyone loved the food they got. And we all agreed this place is a true gem for taco lovers. Also, the prices are incredibly affordable. I think I spent maybe $15 for two tacos and the elote? And I was very full. This is my neighborhood taco spot. They have a good size menu. They also have happy hour until 7pm, I believe. What I like about the menu is that you can do infusion food or regular tacos. The best part is that they actually have a good salsa bar. With salsa that is actually spicy. The drinks are amazing, the mango one with tequila is the best one. If you order the birra taco it comes with consume. If you want to be more healthy you can order your tacos in lettuce instead of tortilla. There's only street parking and it's metered. First timers here -- we came because we were recommended by our server (Ashton) at another fine Cordero establishment -- Carbonara. We got six different tacos -- and all were fabulous! The very busy kitchen clearly pays close attention to all of their ingredients. The chicken in the Colonel Sanders taco was done beautifully! The fish and shrimp in the seafood tacos were done to perfection as well. Really love that the tacos themselves are thin blue corn tortillas that do not compete with their fillings, but simply highlight them. Super impressed with the staff as well. As first timers, we were not familiar with the system. But three different staffers approached at various times to happily walk us through the process. I ordered takeout from Taco Rock. The online portal for ordering and the pick up process was extremely smooth! My food was ready on time (actually earlier since it was ready to pick up immediately). I ordered 4 birria, 2 carne asada, 1 Shake Down Shrimp and 1 Al Pastor. For the birria tacos, it had braised beef, cheese, onion, cilantro, guacamole and came with a beef consomme for dipping. The carne asada was a marinated steak with chilies salsa, cotija cheese, onion and cilantro. The Shake Down Shrimp has shrimp, shredded cabbage, pico de gallo, chipotle shrimp, cilantro, pickled fresno The Al pastor has pork, char-grilled pineapple, jalapeno salsa, onion, and cilantro. I loved all of the tacos! They held up really well in the containers and did not soak through. The meats were all very flavorful and weren't super oily. Salty Taco Rock? I've enjoyed Taco Rock for years --living just up the street in Clarendon it's easy to order and pop down and grab the take out. They do a great job of making the take out experience frictionless and their food over the years has been consistently good...especially their rice and beans! That said, I was surprised to bite into a Cauliflower taco I ordered tonight and witness only 1 piece of cauliflower versus the 2 they used to provide inside their yummy tacos. And worse, the rock N bowl w/veggies entree was so salty it wasn't edible. Why do restaurants think "more salt" to the dish makes it more delicious? It's just the opposite. I called and spoke with Asia who offered to replace the dish and cook the new one with no added salt. Yet, that second dish was still overly salted (guac and salsa was on the side so that should not impact the sodium levels) and was difficult to eat. Was it the rice? The beans? Doubt it since I usually love their rice 'n beans. Was it the way they cooked the veggies? Hard to say but I've noted going forward I need to stick to tacos (it's in their name!) and avoid entrees such as Rock N (Salty) Bowl w/veggies. read more

I can't believe I haven't written a review for Taco Rock as I've dined here about three times over the past two years. It is a casual Mexican restaurant, with ordering on a tablet at the front and you pick up a device that will buzz when your food is ready. Food is prepared relatively quickly. I've ordered tacos (in a blue shell), quesadillas, and burritos here before. The tacos are kind of expensive but the quesadillas and burritos are priced reasonably. Service is really minimal and you seat yourself and get your own drinks. There are a variety of sauces to choose from on the side. Overall, I enjoy coming here and will continue to do so in the future for casual dining of Mexican food. read more

Great lunch spot near my work - my co worker and I sat at the bar and had lunch margs and I had the floutas and Mexican fried rice - loved my meal. THE HYPE IS REAL Picked up my order today and I was so so hungry and Taco Rock DID NOT DISAPPOINT. Started right with the birria crunch wrap supreme and the amount of meat and the cheese was amazing. That dipping gravy sauce was full of flavor. This felt like a peace of meat dipped in love. Been here a couple times and love the tacos here. They have the classics like Carne Asada and Al Pastor, but they also have tons of specialty tacos that have some interesting, unique flavors, as well as non-taco items like quesadillas and tortas. I'd compare this place to Taco Bamba in that regard. For the classic tacos, I recommend the Al Pastor, and for specialty tacos, the Colonel Sanders, Shake Down Shrimp, and Puffy Beef Taco were really good. You can't go wrong with any of the tacos. TLDR: wouldn't recommend this place unless you just wanna drink. I'm not sure if I just went on an off day but my experience wasn't great. I ordered the lengua taco and the ahi tuna taco. The lengua wasn't cooked through and had a lot of pink on the inside, and the tuna was slightly more fishy than I'm comfortable with eating. Their saving grace were their drinks, the margaritas are great but be sure to upgrade your tequila! The rail is worse than Jose. The restaurant is self serve so can't really say anything about service. And the ambiance was ok, it wasn't anything worth reviewing. read more

I usually wait anywhere from 1-100 days to review a place I've eaten at, and yet here I am, still sitting inside of Taco Rock, trying to bask in all of it's wonder and glory. I'm not from around here, and have never heard of Taco Rock. I'm staying nearby and decided to take a short hike over to this place because, hey, when am I NOT craving tacos? I thought I'd only order once, asking for two tacos (the birria and the blackened salmon) and a margarita (passion fruit), but I was wrong. It took every ounce of self control to not inhale those two tacos, trust me. They both had such intricate flavors and textures, plus the birria had a sauce to dip in? And it was delicious and hot? Was I over here slurping up taco bits off of my hands and tray? You bet your booty I was. And the drink was DELICIOUS. I ordered my food and drink from the bar, and the lady bartender was extra sweet and wonderful. Fast forward to maybe 5 minutes later as I sit with an empty tray and glass. "I could leave" I told myself. "I could choose the healthier option and just go" but... I stayed and ordered again. My second round consisted of an ahi tuna and land and sea taco, plus an Island in the Sun cocktail. I'll tackle the cocktail first. It made me think of my trip to Jamaica and it was so tasty, and I don't regret it, but it took me too late to realize that I must like the familiar taste of margaritas with my tacos. My ONLY ISSUE it that there was one single shrimp in the land and sea taco. The tacos aren't massive, and maybe had I actively tried to distribute the shrimp throughout the taco prior to eating it like a wild animal, it wouldn't have been so obvious. I guess I get the appeal of seeing the whole shrimp helps people realize they aren't being robbed of partial shrimp meat, but I almost wanted it to be finely chopped and intermingled with the skirt steak so the texture and flavor was well distributed. But even that minor thing can't keep me from giving TR a well deserved 5 stars. So, in conclusion? The tacos aren't huge, but that helped me find the courage to try four specialty ones without feeling TOO gluttonous. Everything seemed to be cooked perfectly. All of the toppings and sauces were all SO different, but all were amazing. Yum! I love the variety of options here. I've never had an ahi tuna taco or thought about it! The empanadas were great, flaky crust & soft/flavorful insides, both the steak & chicken were equally delicious. My favorite taco was the Birria with the consumme. Stopped by for an early HH (everyday 3-6pm) and a bite to eat to hold me over until a late dinner. The restaurant seating area was surprisingly pretty full so early (it was a Friday late afternoon, though), but we were able to grab a couple seats at the bar right away. I started off with the jalapeno pineapple margarita, a special listed on their board outside. This drink was definitely what I need to end the work week/start my weekend! It had a nice kick to it, was freshing, and had a generous amount of tequila in it. So good I ordered a second round! To eat I decided on the carne asada and Key West grouper tacos. I really enjoyed the blue corn tortillas both tacos came on. They were both soft and a tad sweeter/nuttier than your traditional corn tortillas. I do wish the tacos came on two tortillas or like a paper underneath as both tacos quickly fell apart after two bites. Although I preferred the fish taco over carne asada, both tacos were delicious. The carne asada was flavorful and tender. I couldn't tell my grouper was tequila battered, but it was cooked nicely and was crunchy and soft when I took a bite. I liked the toppings that came with both tacos and there was no need to add any additional salsa. Service was great, with both bartenders taking good care of us. As a california native, im a bit picky about my tacos. Theyre not exactly the double tortilla, palm sized tacos im used to,but nevertheless they were very tasty and a good price for the size and amount of meat and toppings they pack into each one. I got the birria and al pastor. The consommé was very rich, albeit a tad salty. The guacamole on too was what really sealed the deal for me. I usually dont like flour tortillas but these were nice and crispy but still a bit chewy. The al pastor was also good, with the pineapple and sauces used. Was able to catch Taco Rock's soft opening a few weeks ago for lunch! The full menu wasn't available, but they still had great taco options. We also had the option of ordering at the bar, our seat, or in the back by the kitchen. We ordered from the bar and food came really quick! They also have a salsa bar with 4 different types of salsa. Chips and Queso: Queso was super good! Highly recommend, however be aware the chips are thick fried tortillas! I highly recommend the Land and Sea taco because you get a lot of steak and shrimp. Shrimp is nicely grilled and steak was super juicy. Ahi Tuna had some nice flavor, but I wouldn't get it again. There was too much corn tortilla to filling ratio. Lastly, I got the Portabella, which had a good amount of mushrooms and pickled onions. Overall, Taco Rock has some decent tacos and great vibes inside. I would say 3 tacos is a good lunch size! The blue corn tortillas are different, but mine fell apart within the first bite. The chicken lacked flavor, maybe it needs some chunky tomato salsa? The carne asada was ok. The best flavor was the pork belly, but 1) the meat was too hard/tough, and 2) the huge slices of carrots (??) made it difficult to eat. Perhaps they just need to work out some new restaurant kinks as far as flavors go. But the worst is when your taco falls apart and creates a mess. Not sure what they'll do about that. To celebrate a friend's promotion, we all gathered at Taco Rock for a mini-celebration. The food did not disappoint! We started with the blue puff chips - freshly cut blue corn masa, fried so it was crisp on the outside but still soft, chewy and tasty on the inside. Dipped in various salsas at different levels of spiciness, it was a nice start to the lunch before I dug into my three tacos: Shakedown Shrimp was plump and juicy, a little sweet. The food is amazing but the customer service is horrible. This was my first time at Taco Rock. I was not greeted when I walked in and nobody explained the concept of the restaurant. I had to figure out how to order food and drinks on my own. The bar tender in blue Milagro shirt had a horrible attitude. Some of the tacos on the menu were not available to order via kiosk. They closed the kitchen prior to the closing of the establishment. At the end of the night we were still sitting at our table waiting for boxes and one of the employees began picking up items that we were still working on or waiting for boxes for and throwing them away while there was an entire empty table filled with trash that he could have cleaned prior to our table and growing away items that we were not working on. The second taco I ordered was the Lomo Saltado, and it was good-better than the carne asada, but still not the best. Lastly, the street corn-I begin by saying I'm a huge fan of street corn, and this sadly was the worst I've had. It had an almost rotten odor, the corn itself was yellowish-brown like it had been sitting out or was old. I took one bite, and the flavors matched the smell and appearance-not good at all. I'm not local, but my next visit to DC would not include a repeat visit based on this experience. (I went with my sister who ordered two additional tacos. What a nice surprise! My girlfriends and I were craving margaritas and Mexican food and one of them recommended this place. I'm always on the quest for great margaritas and chips and salsa.
