    Storefront off Colfax

There are very few things in this world more satisfying than Taco Tuesday. After working at a nearby coffee shop, a quick Yelp search determined I was in an area full of hidden gems off Colfax. With it being Tuesday, tacos were on the mind, hence a short walk over to TacoMex 1. $1.50 tacos, y'all. All day, every day. I went with the classics: Asada, Pastor, Carnitas, Pollo, and Chorizo. Served all the way with diced white onion and cilantro. Tacos are small, but the double-wrapped corn tortillas make for a substantial bite with excellent flavors. Amplifying the taco experience was the sauce bar filled with sauces and condiments. The sauces had a tingling burn. Limes, radishes and more were in full bounty. I love finding places like this. A prime example of a business you won't find on social media or the popular local magazines, but serves bomb food for under $10. Try 'em out!

I've been coming here since 2013 and it's been great. It hits the spot and is very affordable! I typically go here during the day and its pretty empty service is always good and food is fresh! Try it out tell me what you think!

My fave QUICK taco and AFFORDABLE and GOOD Mexican food fix. Who would say no to delicious $1.50 tacos, quality horchata and amazing pozole! Yum! Plus I also like their $5.50 HUGE breakfast burritos and Even the French fries. Love the buffers of pickled goodies and salsas too!

It was our last night in Denver and we were craving authentic Mexican food. We'd asked around for the best spots and was told from our Hispanic Lyft driver to go here. It hit the spot! TacoMex 1 offers cheap street tacos, tamales and ceviche. There's plenty of plates and items to choose from. When we first walked in, we were greeted by two sweet ladies at the cashier. They explained which items they loved the most. We ordered the beef tongue, chicken, beef head and al pastor tacos with a side of rice and beans. Then we ordered the tamales and shrimp ceviche. Everything tasted great except I didn't enjoy the al pastor or shrimp ceviche that much. I've had better elsewhere, but it was still good. Just not very memorable. Things I'd get again would be the tamales (soft, spicy w/ tender meat), beef tongue & beef head tacos. The price here is awesome. Entire meal was $20 w/ taxes and tip. I highly recommend this place if you're looking for delicious and cheap street tacos.

Being in Downtown Denver at midnight not always gives you options in case you run hungry. Luckily this place is conveniently located on Colfax Ave and Colorado Blvd area. It's open until 3am and service is fast. Good quality food and real Mexican flavors. Service is attentive and you're greeted always with a smile. They have a salsa bar where you can feast in hot flavors if you so wish. Just one recommendation is to make sure dishes are cleaned off the table after someone leaves. Unfortunately some customers leave dirty dishes on the table instead of having the courtesy of using the trash cans. On the same token, make sure the vents are turned on or else the place gets all fumes from the kitchen and then the clothes will have a strong smell of fried food. But in overall is always a positive experience. The days other places are closed like thanksgiving or Christmas, they are open and ready for business. Give them a try. You'll love it.

East Colfax Taco Tour UYE! Sunday October 30th 2011 organized by our truly Tiffany N. 1st STOP TacoMex 1. Man this placed is indeed burstling with patrons. Long queue and we managed to be seated outside. You order at the counter and the staffs send your order. My order for that afternoon were : * Taco Cabesa ($0.99) * Taco Lengua ($0.99) * Taco Tripa ($2.00) You can get all the salsa and all the "trimmings" at the allocated salsa counter inside. All in all its A-OK Tacos, though I cant deny, since we were seated outside, the weather though sunny but chilly, might "affect" my tastebud. I like the salsa offerings, spicy and has a kick to it. Cant wait to return with Hubs and I hope to be seated inside so perhaps my review might differ.

On the weekends, I sometimes forget about eating until it is too late and hunger is driving me crazy. I was out running errands on Saturday, when the hunger pangs struck with a vengeance. With nothing in mind, I decided to head east on Colfax until something caught my eye. Suddenly on the right, smoke signals wafted into the blue sky, just behind a white sign that proclaimed...could that be? 99¢ tacos!?!? Slamming a hard right, I pulled into Tacomex, a stand alone building along East Colfax that possibly could have been a fast food chain in a past life. Today it is so much more. Outside, a young man stood under some pop-up awnings, grilling an assortment of meat on one side, while tending to some pastor on the spit grill to his left. The aromas were comforting and inviting. Inside, I found a clean, crisp, and brightly decorated room, filled with live plants and colorful window paintings. Counter service is the preferred mode here. While English is spoken, brushing up on your Spanish is always a good idea when ordering tacos. For those of you who are like me and lack fluency, all you need to know is this phase: "Quisiera {insert quantity - un(a), dos, tres, cuatro, cinco...} tacos de {insert desired meat}, por favor." Repeat if ordering more than one variety of taco. If eating in say "para aqui", if ordering to go say, "para llevar." Finish your interaction with a smiling gracias. You are now prepared to survive in any taqueria. The tacos are on the small side, but they pack a mighty punch. I thought that the cabeza (cow's head) and the lengua (tongue) were pretty delicious, but they were not the stars of this place. Clearly, the standouts were the birria and the pastor. Birria is a dish that I have seen in many traditional Mexican cookbooks, but rarely at Mexican restaurants. It is a stewed meat, made from beef, goat, lamb, or whatever is available (I'm pretty sure they use beef here). The meat is seasoned and marinated overnight with a chile paste and then slow cooked for several hours until the meat is tender and succulent. The result is a taco with tender, juicy meat bursting with flavor. The pastor is possibly the best in Denver (a very competitive field) when it is being made fresh. Al pastor is pork cooked on a spit grill and then shaved, similar to the way gyros are prepared. Tacos al pastor translates as shepherd's tacos. The tender seasoned meat is then combined with pineapple before going into your tortilla, then your belly. When the outdoor cook is present, you order your food inside and then take your receipt to the cook, who will prepare your tacos al pastor on the spot. I highly recommend coming to this place when the outdoor grill is fired up because the al pastor is simply so much better at those times. This place is relatively close to my house, so I am looking forward to plenty of future visits and hopefully a schedule of when the grill cook will be present.

This place certainly hit the spot the late Friday night/Saturday morning we stopped by. We loaded up on $1.25 tacos and humongous cups of horchata. It was a chilly night, and I kind of regret not ordering the caldo de res. The place is full of drunkies by 2. Whether you're stopping in for a post-drinking taco run or coming in for lunch, it's a good choice. It's very comparable to the spots in LA. The cerviche was spot on and a good value at $5. The tacos had good flavors to them but nothing out of the ordinary. We didn't know there are certain items that you order that you have to pick up yourself from the guy cooking it outside. It would've been helpful if one of the girls told us instead of having us sit there thinking they had forgotten part of our order. Come here if you want some legit Mexican food. That's it.

Then there are rare places that quietly rearrange the furniture inside your head and leave you wondering why you settled for less. Alma Fonda Fina in Denver belongs to that last category. To eat here, though, you must survive an initiation of modern technology. Reservations appear online at exactly 8:00 AM Mountain Time, sixty days in advance. By 8:03 AM, the digital world has consumed all of the appealing slots and the prime hours vanish into the digital ether. Three of us sat at separate computers like desperate laboratory monkeys waiting for a light to flash. Only one emerged with a 7:30 PM slot, feeling less like booking dinner and more like receiving a personal dispensation from the universe. Arriving early, the staff didn't make us stand on the sidewalk like lost tourists. Instead, they invited us to sit outside with the cocktail menu, hospitality announcing you made it through the machine and can finally relax. Once the drinks arrived, the universe seemed reasonable. I ordered the Oaxacan Old Fashioned, built with Milagro Reposado, Union Joven Mezcal, orange bitters, and hoja santa. The mezcal whispered stories through the smoke rather than screaming them in your face. Another 2 guests chose the Hibiscus Margarita, a combination of Milagro Blanco, lime, and deep hibiscus agave looking like a blood orange sunset and tasting like spring. Then there was the Avocado Margarita, ordered out of pure curiosity. One expects an avocado drink to be heavy, perhaps thick enough to patch drywall. Instead, this was weightless, silky, and impossibly cold, the house puree emulsified directly into Herradura Reposado, lime, and agave. It rendered expectations irrelevant, and after generously being offered a taste, I immediately resolved to order one later in the meal. Inside, Fiona introduced herself. Calling her our server is like calling Mozart some dude who played piano. She didn't merely bring plates, she choreographed our happiness. Under her guidance, the food arrived in a spectacular blur. The Guacamole Alma landed first, dusted with smoked salt, queso fresco, and chimichurri de hoja santa alongside brittle heirloom tostadas. Four adults, convinced they had eaten good guacamole before, realized they had been living a lie. Next came the Burrita de Frijoles Puercos, a sourdough tortilla wrapping rich chorizo rojo, queso fresco, and salsa de chile de árbol, which transformed humble beans into a lengthy, philosophical discussion. That was followed by Apache En Su Jugo, prime New York strip swimming in brilliant salsa verde with applewood bacon and confit onions. Every bite was perfectly balanced. Fiona wisely agreed with our order of two servings of Camote Asado, an agave roasted sweet potato with broken salsa macha and fennel whipped requesón. It is probably the finest thing that has ever happened to a root vegetable. We tasted the ocean with Callo de Hacha Al Horno, featuring tender Fall River scallops in sharp serrano ponzu, tomato butter, and chives, creating a sauce so delicious a tablemate literally drank it from the serving plate. The Tostada de Hamachi, pairing pristine fish with habanero mayo, cara cara orange, and Mayan pumpkin seed sikil pak balanced fat and acid with the precision of a Swiss watch. Even the deep fried Quesadilla Frita with rajas con crema and cotija proved elegance isn't abandoned in hot oil. We finished the savory gauntlet with the Taco Campechano, a flawless union of suadero beef and pork belly carnitas, and the Chilaquiles de Borrego with lamb neck barbacoa. Both were highly convincing arguments for the continued existence of the human race. Midway through, more drinks materialized. Two more Avocado Margaritas arrived alongside the Pineapple Sour, an absurd mix of Herradura Blanco, mezcal, pineapple, habanero, Fernet Vallet, and tepache oil. It was refreshing, smoky, and endlessly interesting. By the end, conversation degenerated into a chant of people insisting each plate was the best, concluding with a general admission that nobody knew how they pulled it off. Mercifully, there is no dessert here because we couldn't responsibly consume another molecule. People celebrate Alma Fonda Fina as one of the most affordable Michelin starred spots in America. To look at it that way is to view a miracle through an accounting ledger. The true value is emotional, found in the rare joy of watching talented people perform at the peak of their powers because they care. So yes, I recommend it. But set your alarm, have multiple people tapping keys or screens, and move quickly. Some tables on this fragile planet are worth fighting for. This one certainly is.

Our server was very knowledgeable without being too pushy or over explanatory. We tried the big eye tuna ceviche, the scallops and the classic braised lamb shank.
