I could not wait for this place to open! Stopped in with a friend of mine for lunch on opening day,…read morewhich I was a little leery of, because I'm sure there are kinks to work out. It wasn't terribly busy, the busy lunch crowd had come and gone. But we were greeted warmly and asked if we were dining in or carrying out. We wanted to dine in and were told to sit anywhere. We chose a booth by the window. The service for the first day was spectacular. Sweet, smiling servers eager to meet our every need. We first ordered water and a margarita while we looked at the extensive menu. They are open for breakfast, lunch and dinner with a bar. The quickly brought out chips and salsa. The chips were crispy and there was a small bowl of a greenish salsa, good flavor, but a bit too hot for me. There were 2 bottles of sauce as well in the little cart the other salsa came in. I tried each of those...again, good flavor at first then the burn. I had to keep eating plain chips and drowning my tongue in water. I alternated between my water and the frozen margarita I ordered. I feel like the menu was a bit more authentic than I'm used to, so I asked our server for something with steak. I don't recall the name of it, but it was nicely seasoned, thinly sliced steak, onions, jalapeños and tomatoes fried together served along side reddish rice and beans with a bit of cheese sprinkled on it, a side undressed side of lettuce and tomato salad. I asked them to hold the tomatoes in the steak and they accommodated.. I immediately dove into the steak... tender with good flavor. I went for the rice and beans and my beans were cold. The server came around asking how everything was, I told her the beans were cold and she immediately apologized and brought me some fresh refried beans, they had no cheese on them, but they were piping hot. So much better. My friend ordered a chicken burrito, she said the chicken was really flavorful and tender. My margarita was frozen, and you can request them either way, frozen or on the rocks. It had some kind of red spice sprinkle on it, maybe Tajin? I've had never had it that way before. Not much tequila, it wasn't strong at all. We had to ask for more napkins as there were none at the table. Otherwise servers were very attentive. The prices were average, but I would have liked to see lunch specials on the menu! I will try it again in a few weeks.

Found yet another locally owned Mexican restaurant in Belvidere. Gomez is actually pretty clean and…read morespacious compared to many others around it. It also has a pretty big menu. Actually impressive how much one can get. The prices are okay for portions. Coming here the first time we had assumptions about what it would be like of course. It's actually a lot better than expected. The thing is it still needs lots of improvement after several years. A lot of confusion about what got ordered. Pretty slow and took forever to get service. As with any of these places, there has to be alcohol. It's about $11 for a margarita. These come in a few flavors including peach. It's about $9 for the Vegan Burrito. We each got this and this is filled with avocado, beans, and other stuff. A lot of the menu is meaty. They have chips and guacamole for one of the few choices for vegetarians. A lot of authentic items. They even have tongue and tripe. Getting anything here is a chore. It's closed Mondays. There's not much to get for vegetarians.

Well as everyone said it's in a strip mall but recently painted and spruced up a lot it's small…read moreand independently owned. My friend loves the margaritas here and so we both got large ones and I upgraded tequilla but shouldn't have bothered. It's just a margarita, or I shoulda just got a shot. It's my opinion margaritas are kind eh, unless you really know how to make them super traditionally with lime, tequilla on lots of ice and salted rim. Anyway it wasn't bad, I'm just picky when it comes to mixed drinks. So I got the ground beef taco meal with rice and beans. It had some pretty runny "sauce" and the beans and rice were standard. I was ok with everything but not impressed quite frankly. Especially when the bill came. For taco meal, a margarita large it was $36 before tip. Making it in the forties with tip seems just kinda ridiculous. I know prices have gone up everywhere but geez. I probably won't make a trip to go again but overall just ok, except for prices. Friends looked good. Service was great anyway.

Certainly wasn't sure about this Mexican place in Belvidere. De Juan looked like it was pretty…read moresketchy even from the outside. It's at the end of a pretty crummy strip mall and that's saying nothing about the kinds of people. How bad would it be inside? Turns out not that bad to be honest: cheap looking but okay though. After thinking about it we went inside and got seats at the bar. It had a few others in there and it looked pretty okay. The menu is basic Mexican American stuff. It's about $7 for cocktails. Luna Azul is a blue margarita. This was an innocent looking but strong one though. As for the food, not bad. There's the basic types of stuff. It's about $11 for a burrito. The Vegetarian Burrito is among these. Very stuffed with onions, peppers, and whatever. Comes with a cheese sauce on it. The burrito without it is maybe even better it seems. Honestly it's a place that needs to be given a chance and not passed up just because of the sketchy area. It's for sure not authentic, but it's still mostly okay though. There's plenty of choices for meat eaters as well as vegetarians.
