Well as everyone said it's in a strip mall but recently painted and spruced up a lot it's small and independently owned. My friend loves the margaritas here and so we both got large ones and I upgraded tequilla but shouldn't have bothered. It's just a margarita, or I shoulda just got a shot. It's my opinion margaritas are kind eh, unless you really know how to make them super traditionally with lime, tequilla on lots of ice and salted rim. Anyway it wasn't bad, I'm just picky when it comes to mixed drinks. So I got the ground beef taco meal with rice and beans. It had some pretty runny "sauce" and the beans and rice were standard. I was ok with everything but not impressed quite frankly. Especially when the bill came. For taco meal, a margarita large it was $36 before tip. Making it in the forties with tip seems just kinda ridiculous. I know prices have gone up everywhere but geez. I probably won't make a trip to go again but overall just ok, except for prices. Certainly wasn't sure about this Mexican place in Belvidere. De Juan looked like it was pretty sketchy even from the outside. It's at the end of a pretty crummy strip mall and that's saying nothing about the kinds of people. How bad would it be inside? Turns out not that bad to be honest: cheap looking but okay though. After thinking about it we went inside and got seats at the bar. It had a few others in there and it looked pretty okay. The menu is basic Mexican American stuff. It's about $7 for cocktails. Luna Azul is a blue margarita. This was an innocent looking but strong one though. As for the food, not bad. There's the basic types of stuff. It's about $11 for a burrito. The Vegetarian Burrito is among these. Very stuffed with onions, peppers, and whatever. Comes with a cheese sauce on it. The burrito without it is maybe even better it seems. Honestly it's a place that needs to be given a chance and not passed up just because of the sketchy area. It's for sure not authentic, but it's still mostly okay though. In my opinion, this restaurant is more Tex-mex. It is not authentic Mexican food ( POV: I'm Mexican). My daughter and I came here and we ordered tacos and enchiladas. The tacos had lettuce, tomatoes, and cheese. FYI, real Mexican tacos only have onion, cilantro, and salsa. Plus, the tortilla was more on the cold side and not fully heated. I did take off a point for the ambiance, not because of how it looks, just that it's so tiny that sometimes it can be hard to get a table if you have a big group. 10/10 get the margaritas. I enjoyed my dinner, enchiladas and a taco. All were flavorful and served hot. The sides, rice and refried beans, were nothing special but admittedly it is really hard to make those stand out. I really like this place! It's on a weird strip mall in the middle of Belvidere. By looking at it, you wouldn't think it's much. The chips are good, the salsa is ok. What I was impressed by was their corn and flour tortillas! They both tasted like they are made their, abnormal compared to Mexican restaurants in Rockford, sadly. That's a huge huge plus! I ordered the deal where you pick three items, I did a taco, chimachanga, and a tamale. Both were excellent. Flavorful and fresh. The rice could of been approved. The beans were good. (I'm a picky ass bitch about the rice and beans). We split the fried ice cream. Now this is the greatest choice of all. It's a huge cylinder chuck of ice cream, covered with a thick sugary covering of corn flakes. It has a syrup in the bottom. Oddly enough, the ice cream was butter pecan. But it was really rich, almost like a custard more than ice cream. But it was damnnnnn good. With hint of cinnamon, OMG, girl....GET IT! It's $3.50, but you def want to split it. He's huge! I was back in the Rockford area for a week and decided to meet up with a couple friends for dinner. I was craving some Mexican so we headed on over to De Juan. The sign is super tiny and it's in a strip mall so don't drive too fast, otherwise you will probably go right by this place. I think some would consider it a dive, but these hole in the wall type places always have the best food. They had pitches of margaritas for $10, so my boyfriend and I split that. They taste super authentic and not overly sugary like a lot of margaritas usually do. I opted for the Enchiladas Verde with chicken, which was amazing. The verde sauce is super spicy, don't be fooled. I cannot really tolerate a lot of spice, so this was a bit much for me. But that being said, it was still ridiculously tasty. The portion sizes are huge too, so be prepared to take some home, like I did. Between this place and Molcajete, Belvidere has some legit Mexican places to eat. I think I still favor Molcajete slightly, just because their guacamole is out of this world and the service is a bit better. But the waiter we had at De Juan was super nice too, and joked with us throughout the night. I wouldn't hesitate to come back here if I'm in the area again! read more

I love Mexican food and this restaurant is the very best in the Rockford area. I don't even waste my time anywhere else. The chips and salsa are really tasty but you've got to try the guacamole...so fresh and delicious. My favorite dish to order is the chile rellenos. They are perfection at De Juan. You can also make your own plate with two or three items and that is an inexpensive way to try a few more of their options. This was my first visit to DeJuan. Stopped on lunch hour with a friend and her husband. We were seated immediately in the small restaurant in a small strip mall. The waitress was friendly and efficient. We were served complimentary chips and salsa. The chips were good, freshly fried, but the salsa was the consistency of tomato soup. We ordered a side of pico de Gallo and added it to the salsa for more substance. We also ordered guacamole which was incredibly fresh and quite delicious! I ordered the cheese enchiladas and I loved the fact that you can choose green sauce or red sauce. I had the green sauce. Three enchiladas came with rice and beans for $8.95. I'm not sure how this place can tout that they have "authentic" Mexican food. I ordered vegetarian enchiladas and they came filled with INSTANT mashed potatoes, topped with what appeared to be a ketchup-y sauce. The guacamole was also well below subpar...I'm not even sure if real avocados were used in the making. I couldn't even eat my meal, which turned out to be $17! (including a tecate-the only consumable thing I ordered). The service was also absolutely horrible. Had dinner tonight with the family at De Juan for the first time, wasn't thrilled with the food quality or service. I've visited other Mexican restaurants in the area and have had way better Mexican food at a more reasonable price. Rice was dry and seems to be reheated as it was crunchy on top, refried beans tasted out a can. My daughters kids meal came with one taco that she didn't eat because she didn't like the taste of the meat. My wife's torta was okay but needed more meat and if you'd like steak expect a dollar surcharge on burritos, tortas or tacos. My taco dinner came with only two tacos which could of used more meat. All together 2 tacos, a torta, kids meal taco and some dry crunchy rice and beans with 3 drinks cost us $32. Not worth it and never coming back again. I looooved the vegetarian (potato) enchiladas I got! I also tried my friend's veggie burrito and loved it too. So, based on my first visit and the fact that my friend goes here more frequently, I'm going to say the food here is great. The atmosphere was pretty similar to a lot of other Mexican food restaurants, nothing super memorable except that the music kept stopping and then being really loud and then going away again... kinda weird but not really important. The prices and service were also pretty average, but the yummy food is worth it. Really the only negative for me was the salsa (too mild and cold), but I am sure some people like it. As some other yelpers have pointed out, the service here can be terrible. They got my friend's order completely wrong (he ordered chicken fajitas and they brought out chicken chimichangas. They then argued with him that was what he ordered. I heard what he ordered and he said fajitas. He took the wrong order back and a while later brought the fajitas out and slammed them on the table.
