Had a pretty okay lunch at this Mexican restaurant in Belvidere. It has a pretty nondescript location on a dead end street to be honest. Taqueria El Torito is serious authentic stuff. A lot of the familiar items. You can even get exotic things like tripe if you like it meaty. Found out about it while looking up the Mexican restaurants around here. It's certainly got lots of competition to be sure. There's shit tons of these. A pretty boring place inside. Really not much of an atmosphere with it actually pretty quiet. Has no alcohol. It's about $3 to get the Jamaica. This is a hibiscus beverage that's good stuff. As for the food it's mostly authentic. It's about $12 for the Taco Salad. Choose a meat or get it with toppings that include avocado, cheese, lettuce, onions, tomatoes, and more. The rest of the menu is meaty with animal parts such as tripe. Got a menu full of classics. It's located on North State Street at Old Beloit Road. There's a plaza behind the gas station and next to a laundromat that are things to look for because it's hard to find coming from wherever. read more

This is by far the WORSE place I have ever ate it . First the chips were DISGUSTING the salsa was water with tomato sauce in it and maybe a piece of cilantro then main course came I literally took a Bite of the chicken that was in my burrito and Immediately spit it in my napkin. I could not even swallow it. I am not sure what or even if it was chicken. I almost feel as though it may have been the foot of the chicken in my burrito. The suppose to be chicken was dark chunks that had stringy fat when I ripped it apart and the small piece in my mouth that was not swallowed! I was hungry so tried really however I couldn't. I ate a few bites of the flour tortilla shell from 1/2 but my plate looked like a pile of puke. Wish I had a picture ! Anyways told the waitress she said oh well I like them I said ok that's good but Literally I can't eat this . Refused to take off the order was beyond rude and the lack of professionalism and ultra sensitive attitude spoke volume . So not only was the food the grossest I ever seen or tasted without swallowing has the most unprofessional staff representing their business. We love the tortas sold here. In my, and family's opinion, they are made just right. We order the skirt steak torta and ask for "chiles toreados" ( somewhat fried green jalapeños) on the side. Each one of us have a different way of having our torta, and the owner makes them how we want them. The owner is really nice and humble. Got food to go for the first time today only because I accidentally ordered here instead of one of the other Mexican in Belvidere. They overcharged us on everything. When my husband asked for a receipt the lady at the counter said they didn't have one. I called when he got home to inquire about extra charges and she said it was 12.99 for chicken fajitas & 1.95 for each taco (we got 5). I asked for extra salsa which I always do at the other location (they never ever charge) & she said she charged .25 extra for each of those. So $5 for those even though that's a complete rip off! It's still doesn't add up to $48.00. Entire experience was shady. Food was meh. I do not recommend especially since there are several other Mexican restaurants in Belvidere to choose from. read more

The chicken was dark meat chunks that were apparently cooked on the grill ... it wasn't shredded or marinated as it used to be, instead it was tasteless and fatty. The chunks were stuffed into the burrito with hardly any tomatoes, lettuce or rice!! Forget about any cheese or sauce on top the burrito! Waitress was able to cancel my to go order, but I paid for the other food (and I'm using that term "food" lightly)! Restaurant was recommended to us by another party. Was told they have very good tacos. The steak tacos were very good. Had lots of meat. Refried beans were from a can. Had no flavor. Chili Rellanos was the worst I have ever had. They had one girl taking orders, bussing tables, answering the phone and taking payment. Excellent food full of flavor. I had the burrito dinner and it was great..I have eaten at all the Mexican places here in town and this is by far the best. The menu is small, but there is a reason, the food is outstanding. They have some American food for the kids if they don't like Mexican food. The food was ordered and was on our table within 10 minutes. Chips and salsa was great, they provided two salsas, one mild and one hot. If you like even hotter hotsauce like I do, they have some even hotter. The staff is very pleasant and courteous. Would highly reccommend. read more

This is one of my favorite places in town. They have great food, a friendly staff, and a pleasant atmosphere. I recommend the tamales, tacos and burritos, but everything is really good, including the chips & salsa. Owners/operators Esteban and Anselmo are great guys who often take the time to come out to your table and ask how your meal was. That says a lot.
