I hear a lot of Hispanics complain about "Authentic Mexican Restaurants" being deceiving Tex-Mex food. Sure, I'm Hispanic myself, but I never care as long as the food is good. I'm open to everything. But sometimes Hispanics are tied so much to their culture, food just doesn't taste the same here, and that's understandable because from what I've eaten in Mexico, I'd be the same way if I grew up there. Well, that's for the most part. I haven't been to Mexico in years, but one thing I do remember is food and their settings. It was in Mexico where I saw my very first vehicular restaurant. In short, it's usually a bus or a large truck with a kitchen in the back. You get your food right then and there. It almost brings new meaning to the "drive-thru" concept. These places are very lacking in the sense that you usually don't have restrooms, sinks to wash your hands, or even a place to sit. But for what these places lack in, they definitely make up for with food. Taconmadre is as authentic as a "real" Mexican restaurant can be. Not only do you have a mirror image of what you'd expect from Cuauhtémoc, Chihuahua, but the food is as fresh and delicious as any "real" Mexican food I've eaten in Mexico. The prices are usually cheap. One of my favorite feats is the pricing. When something is listed as $5, they mean it. No taxes. $5=$5. $2.50=$2.50. I wish every business did their pricing like this. Another feat is the fact that it's open 24 hours. They serve breakfast in the mornings and lunch during lunch, etc. They're usually swamped on weekend nights because clubs El Rodeo and Liquid are right down the street and a lot of people eat there before or after their clubbing, but they do a good job not to keep you waiting too long. All and all, the food is great and as authentic as Mexican food can be. I'd love to see them open a restaurant instead of having a bus--or what we in Edgebrook call it: "The Roach-coach." (Not trying to infer anything with the name). They do have tables with seats, but only a handful, and that's the only thing keeping this place from getting one more star. P.S. Supposedly a rapper by the name "Chingo Bling" owns this place. That's what I heard at least. Doesn't matter. Eat there. read more

This place does NOT honor their sign. It clearly states in English and Spanish that your meal is free if they don't give you a receipt. We spoke with owner and his reply was "We are not here to give free food". We suggested they take down the sign if they are not going to honor their sign. Owner and Claudia Ramirez were both rude and stated "well don't come back". Plus the food Sucks. Don't eat here.. It's disappointing that people give our ethnicity a bad reputation. read more

I use to love eating at their taco truck location off Bellfort, because the food was always hot, made to order and the guy behind the window was super friendly. We decided to try their dine in location today and it was an epic fail. Don't get me wrong, the food was hot and fresh, authentic Mexican food, but the part of explaining our missing order didn't fair too well. We ordered the nachos especiales and the nachos michochana. When the girl behind the counter handed us our order, she also read over what we ordered. We grabbed the bag and went on our way. When we pulled out the order in the car, it turns out we were missing the nacho michochana. I called the restaurant and informed one of the girls that the order was missing and she kindly said, come on over and we will take care of it. When we arrived back in the restaurant, the same girl I spoke to, requested that I bring the actual order inside so she could verify that she handed us everything. I had to iterate to her that it was not everything, therefore I called and returned back to the restaurant. She reverted to speaking Spanish with me, when she clearly spoke English fluently on the phone earlier and when she took down our order. I had to tell her once again, the order of the nacho michochana was missing. We were not asking that they remake both nachos. I only asked that the order that we placed and paid for was given to us. After much quarreling about the one missing food order, she finally gave in and handed us our nacho michochana. It took her fifteen minutes to stand there and argue with us about remaking the order since she insinuated we did not like the food. The food was exceptional, but not as good as their Bellfort location taco truck. The portions for the nachos were massive. I don't think I'll return to this location, due to lack of service and people forgetting to actually give you what you ordered. read more

El Borrego down the street was packed and so I opted for this place. There was only 1 other couple there who ordered right before me. 20 minutes goes by and couple of people who ordered AFTER me received their food. My husband then started complaining and realized they forgot our order... Finally 30 minutes later in 40 degree weather... we got our tacos that shouldn't have taken no more than 15 minutes. The tacos were bleh. They added too much onions and cilantro which overpowered the taste of the tacos. Would not recommend or come back. read more

Horrible service, cut me off and began helping a person behind me who had a bad order, argued with the customer about his order as I waited to put mine in. I ordered over 20 tacos and asked them to put in 5 charros. They only gave me 3, and I told them if I had to pay for the others I would, when the lady stuck her hand out asking me for the money before she put the charros in the bag.. They gave me attitude about that and about me asking for more than 2 red salsas for that large order! Didnt get a receipt, but didnt bother to bring it up against their "no receipt you may get your order for free" since I was dissatisfied with their service. Not to mention the cilantro they gave me was old and the charros were cold. El Borrego would never treat me like this. Taconmadre - Mexican Near Me - Houston, Texas

There's at least 5 taco trucks within a half mile drive on this street. I only had a chance to try taconmadre, but i'm pretty happy i picked this one. Order loud and preferably in Spanish. I got a #3 combo (2 flour tacos, rice and beans, and agua fresca) with barbacoa. The tortillas are crisp and the barbacoa is so tender and fatty. Really awesome tacos, but i'd forget about the combo. Rice and beans are just rice and beans, nothing out of the ordinary, and the agua fresca is a little too sweet and forgettable. The truck also has a burgers and a whole bunch of other food options. They take card as well, so don't worry about not having cash. The only annoying part is how they package salsa into tiny bags that explode as you try to open them. read more

So I'm aware that there's a few of these around town, but if there anything like the one in South Houston I'm not interested on visiting the other ones. The tacos are over priced, they aren't big enough, the "fresh lemonade" wasn't so fresh and cost way more then two tacos together and finally the frijoles charros just tasted strange. One thing that also really bothered me was that i literally poured the whole little baggie of green salsa they give you and yet I couldn't taste the salsa! The green salsa is an important factor when it comes to eating tacos and I was just extremely disappointed, I expect way more from Taconmadre. To be completely honest I only decided to try it out because they accept credit cards. I wouldn't recommend this place to anybody, unless if you're anything like me, don't like to carry cash and have to settle with a taco truck that does accept cards. read more

Great Tacos! Good price! There are a MILLION and 1 taco places in Houston, honestly its hard to get it wrong. However There are ONLY a FEW taco trucks in Houston that really do get it right. Taconmadre is one. Add avocado to your tacos! Also menu isnt only limited to tacos, in fact the last times that I've been going I've been Strictly going hard on their "chicharron gordita" To die For!! When you're a taco truck and your gordita is better than the gorditas from the place, literally directly across from you, and actually/specifically called "Gorditas aguascalientes" you're doing something right. read more

I've had good Mexican food from Sout Texas to San Diego, California. You have to explore the menu the best dish at one place might not be the best dish at another. I'm glad to see a couple of West coast favorites served right here in houston... I like the super fries (like super nachos but with fries) and I love the fajita burrito with rf beans cilantro and onions... (on the West coast they call it carne asada instead of fajita) around here if you use the term asada you get guisada... but it's very good either way. If they would make the fries crispy I would give five stars. But whatever don't take wooden nickels from Indians and don't buy half raw potatoes from a Mexican... read more

One of the best if not the best taco trucks tacos in East Houston. Very cheap too. I just wish they were located in a different area. For one, their parking lot is way too small, there is hardly any light on the street, and well the area seems unsafe tbh. And even though their taco sauce is amazing, they serve in a small bag, if you are traveling and you are not careful enough you could end up spilling all the sauce on you. The food is...okaay. Some nights the food is warm and fresh and other nights the food is OLD and COLD. Every single time I go I order in the drive thru and every single time the wait is exceptionally long, they take your order and if there is a long line, they ask you to park in the strip center next door. I have had to wait 30-45 minutes before. I waited so long because I had already paid and not because I couldn't wait to eat my MEDIOCRE gordita combo, which I had ordered fajita and got chicken fajita. I ordered in Spanish and they got my order wrong before, so when I went back I ordered in English and they also kept getting it wrong. Not sure what language you have to order in. I guess the people who take the orders do NOT know the menu, because if you order a combo # they ask you to tell them what it is. In that case, why even have combo #'s?
