I have just moved to this neighborhood from Bay Ridge and always go to the same spot for tacos, decided to switch it up and I'm so glad I did! The service is amazing! This place doesn't look like anything special, but the simple and no-frills Mexican food is delicious. I had the chicken burrito and the nachos, both of which I devoured like they were my last meal on Earth. Service was languid but that seems normal for NYC. Prices were low. I believe the owner's of this place also do the taco truck near the bowling alley on the corner of 5th and 38th, Tacos El Bronco, which is also yummy, but lacks the variety of this restaurant. There may be better places to eat in this prominently Latino neighborhood, but if you like Mexican food, you won't go wrong stopping by and trying this place out. This restaurant has reopened. If you just came from Taco Matamoros you will notice that the menu is exactly the same! (similar to a chinese take out menu). I tried the Cabezas and Lengua (tongue) tacos here and boy were they good. Their tacos had the piping hot, fresh off the grill taste and flavor. It's a somewhat small, narrow place with about 14 tables taking up most of the room, with a counter at the back where you can order to go (or they'll seat you). It looks brand new, with smart wood tables and paneled walls. Very clean and minimal. It's also a tad sterile - lacking character. That said, I had some beef and carnitas tacos, each were filled with decent meat, herbs, onions, a decent dollop of guac served in two tortillas. They were served with a side of spicy green salsa and sliced radish. These were ordered a la carte for fairly cheap, but they also have tortas, burritos and combo meals in the $7-15 range. Overall the food is good, but it kinda lacks character, isn't remarkable in a neighborhood of similar joints, and also likes variety (one salsa, no refried beans, etc). read more

Cons ~The place is small so sometimes on weekends you have to wait to get a table. ~When you order for delivery you sometimes have to wait over an hour for your food to come. Poor, inattentive service, very slow to serve. Got simple order completely wrong and didn't tell us. Only admitted switching cheese for chicken after bill was submitted - no apologies. Tacos below average and not worth a 45 minute wait in cold weather when we were the only diners there the entire time. Could understand if crowded restaurant/busy night. This was the worst night to be honest. Never have I ever had my card snatched out of my hand to be charged. Let me give you some prefix for how that happened. My friend and I were apartment shopping and had a rough night so we stumbled upon this restaurant that seemingly had margaritas, so we were all for it. As we're drinking and eating and have a good time, the waitresses keep looking over at us and whispering to eachother, but also coming over every minute asking if we were done with what was on the table. Annoying but whatever. We finally ask for the check and it comes out to 75 dollars and some cents for a meal that was definitely not hat much for such a cheap restaurant that's seating two people. We also realized she added a 10 dollar service charge which.... has never happened to me at a hole in the wall B grade Mexican restaurant before. We ask her about it and she says it's something that happens in the system, it automatically adds 10 dollars when the charge is 50 dollars and up. She sees us confused by this charge so she comes over and snatches the old receipt and hands us the new one with no service charge this time. At this point we're over it so we decide to just pay. My friend pays half in cash, I put my card down. She proceeds to come over with the nastiest attitude and tells us we can't do half card and half cash, with the biggest fake smile on her face. This was obviously bullshit. I proceed to get up to go to an atm(my friend is still seated) and she comes back and snatched my card and the receipt to go and charge it. I walk over to her by the register and take my card back because I'm so shocked that she had the audacity. She's telling me she was going to charge the card because I was trying to leave. I tell her I'm going to an atm, because obviously you won't split the check and I have no cash, my friend has been seated this whole time. Obviously we're not trying to dine and dash. Dear Tacos California, Two words say it best, "Never Again." Came here for the first time last night because I always go to tacos Matamoros and I wanted to try a place I had not been before. The food here is decent but I've had better and the service is complete trash. They come to you within two seconds of you sitting down with the menu and when you're not all decided they go to the back and emerge 15 minutes later to check if you're ready to order again out of spite. Because it was late my friend and I looked at the door for business hours and there were none but the sign on the door said we're open so we went right in. I don't like to go into places that are about to close. That being said we were served without being warned once inside that the place was about to close. Despite their failure to communicate when they close like a normal restaurant, they serve you when you come in and rush you out. Another miscommunication was the sign on the door that says they accept all cards but said they only were taking cash at the moment after presenting the check. Which is most likely because they were rushing to close and took the register out. They even the audacity to turn the lights off on my friend and I and turned them back on the moment we left the place. True, I haven't been to that many Mexican restaurant in the area so I don't have that much to compare to, but that's because I am super satisfied with Tacos California and don't really have a reason to look for other places. I come here at least once a week with a friend, sometimes as many as 3 times a week. The tacos here are the best tacos I've had anywhere, including 4 different states in Mexico. The tacos are perfectly seasoned and taste so good that I usually start craving tacos around 8am. The staff is really friendly and attentive. Sure it gets busy here sometimes, but isn't that a sign that the food is awesome? While we've never had to wait for a table, I would happily wait to be seated here. Love this place! read more

I love the tacos here! I always order the Pastor, Lengua, or Carnitas. They are so tasty that I would travel all the way from E Village to eat here. The menu is varied and has a lot of stuff you wouldn't find in other Mexican restaurants such as Tripe and cow's head. read more
