We were walking along Smith St. looking for a new dining spot when Ruta Oaxaca caught our eye. A cozy little neighborhood place with tacos and margaritas - perfect! We're glad we stopped in. We caught them during Happy Hour and their $10 classic margaritas (A-Wevos on the drink menu) were absolutely delicious (and not light on the tequila! ;-) We ordered Tacos Mixtos, choosing Birria, Chicken and Shrimp. Fresh ingredients all around, great sauces on them. The shrimp popped with flavor in your mouth, the chicken was super tender and flavorful, and the beef birria was ok, a little too chewy. The Churros Rellenos were a very hot, crispy and fun way to end the meal. Our server Jim was very friendly and helpful as well. There was so much more on the menu we want to explore, so we can't wait to go back!

One of the BEST Mexican restaurants I ever went to. The food is extremely authentic and I was obsessed with what I got. I highly recommend the tacos. The service was really good because the staff is knowledgeable about the menu and give great recommendations. I love the authentic atmosphere with the lovely music that really brings the authenticity out. This is a great restaurant for a birthday celebration or a date night out.

I really enjoyed this spot! Cute decor. Clean. Open and a solid lil bar where HH is available. Employees are attentive and constantly cleaning. They even knew to stop sweeping near us. I assure you not everyone everywhere does. They were able to give good recommendations for Mezcal and ensured I didn't have basic tahin. Try the worm salt. And yes, they know a Mezcal shot should come with an orange. I took a pic of the name cause it's a gooood Mezcal. You will be overwhelmed with the options. The food was good portion and flavorful. I had the grilled octopus and it was cooked perfectly. The corn salas is friggin amazing. The mole is perfect. Seriously, if I had a second stomach I could've eaten more. The wife's tacos were meeeeaaattttyyy! I only tasted the birria you can chose which and her other two were chicken. She enjoyed the flavor and my bite was delectable. Def come again. It's a chain too-- surprised and ready to have consistency in flavor and service.

I'm a big fan of Mexican food especially since I'm married to a Mexican who loves to cook and spoils my belly with food from his culture. Since it was our 14th-year wedding anniversary last month, I decided to treat him to a night at Ruta Oaxaca. Let me tell you that this place is now our favorite Mexican spot. The food, drinks, ambiance....just everything was perfect. We started th night with some drinks. I ordered a Oaxacan Old-Fashioned and it was the smokiest drink I've ever had. I just had to have another one before the night ended. It went great with my Oaxacan steak, which was also filled with smoky flavor along with Oaxacan cheese and sweet plantains. The rice and beans that came with dish was a great blend and the churros that we had for dessert was just heaven. It was tastier with the coffee flavored sauce that came with it. My daughter had ordered streak tacos and it was so big and filled from top to bottom with steak. I had a bite because I can't resist tacos and it was a mouthful of flavor. The night ended with a free shot of mezcal from the waitress because I had mentioned in my reservation that it was our anniversary. So the perfect end to the perfect night. I can't wait to go back and try their mole chicken.

What a cute back patio area! The inside was completely dead but the outside is the place to be. It's so cute and cozy and our server was super friendly. They've got a pretty large food and drink menu. My friend got a red sangria that looked delicious, but I stuck with water for dinner. I ordered the chicken quesadillas with no squash, and they were great! I didn't love the texture nor consistency of the melted cheese in the tortilla but that could be a me thing. The salsa and sour cream were great for dipping (if there's ever a side sauce of sorts, trust that I'm going to devour those). All in all they've got plenty of options and I look forward to trying something new next time I visit!

Today we decided to dine in for earlier dinner. Everything was delicious even the happy hour drinks. We ordered side or rice and beans and the ribs and eggs entree.

If you live in the neighborhood and you've seen other restaurants rotate through this space (the late, great HiHi Room was the most recent), you know the backyard is one of the best in Brooklyn. The long awaited margaritas (2 for 1 during happy hour) are also excellent. The Alma del Sol with its watermelon and basil flavors and a poblano rim is a favorite, and the Casafortunas is wonderful as well. All margaritas are a welcome bargain at BOGO. After a couple of meals, we've learned a little about what we love on this menu (and it's a lot). They have a lot of interesting and upscale options. We've tried the Steak Oaxaqueño, a NY strip covered in melted Chihuahua cheese and nestled in a red mole, accompanied by maduros and a little nopales salad. The flavors are big and bold and on point. The Pescado of the Day is also a win; we recently had a Chilean seabass served with a corn and quinoa salad that I loved, and a chileatole sauce that made everything taste amazing. That said, I'm far more taken with the simple items on the menu. The shrimp flautas on the appetizer menu, the complimentary chips and smoky chipotle salsa, the rice and beans that accompany many mains (bangin'), the pleasantly chunky guacamole, and the TACOS. Every single taco I've tried has been absolutely outstanding, and also quite different from the others. They have varied salsas, marinades, slaws, pickled items...they are all colorful, balanced, and just so damn delicious. Al pastor is always my favorite, but the pescado and the cochinita pibil rival it in terms of flavor. I look forward to trying all ten types. Also, I have to bring my children (because they're really small and people tell me I can't leave them at home while we're gone), and I appreciate that they do have chicken fingers and fries now since my younger daughter eats very little else. I'm a big fan of Ruta Oaxaca, and we'll be back again soon.

So good! The food was delicious it was just on the pricey side. The ceviche tasted very fresh and the server was friendly, and the complimentary chips were great as well.

Chicken Bunuelos- the mole is exquisite. The arugula salad is the perfect balance.

Absolutely delicious! I will be frequenting as often as my work travels allow to try all the menu items. The mole poblano is the perfect balance of spicy and complexity... service was amazing. The ambiance is quaint and sophisticated and charming.

We have eaten here a few times, they start you with chips and salsa, all the food pictured from the fish tacos, to the shrimp and short rib tastes so fresh and delicious, they are very attentive and the place has a nice atmosphere. Definitely, a great place to take family and friends!

We visited Rita Oaxaca on a Saturday night around 8pm. Tables were full outside of one right by a drafty door, so we elected to sit at the bar and were seated ASAP. I had a margarita which tasted great, though portion size seemed small given the huge ice cubes. I ordered the tacos mixtos (pick 3.) birria was the star of the show for sure, crunchy taco shell, flavorful beef, cheesy. Delicious. The Al Pastor was not good at all - very dry bland pork, absolutely no citrus/pineapple flavor to be detected. Do not recommend. The shrimp was good!

My friend and I each order a cocktail, and are catching up. I'm from Brooklyn, however I no longer live here, and this was precious catch-up time with my friend. Then I get interrupted mid-sentence by the old-timer DJ from his low seat in a corner behind the bar. I had bumped the bar with my wrist (bumped my wrist watch as well, not deliberately) and then placed my hand down (granted- more than placed but definitely not slammed), and he decided to warn me that I COULD HAVE made his record skip. It was the Eagles or Santana (far from eclectic, but that's just me). I'm also 99% certain he turned the volume up afterwards, making it even harder to enjoy the company. After that interaction, I struggled to pick it back up with my friend, because I found that distraction very effing rude. When this "4th wall" gets broken down with service, it is hard to then enjoy the space in an uninhibited state. I am all for the Tokyo Vinyl Bar vibe, and I'm also for also giving talent an outlet to share their collection, but this interaction colored my experience, and I closed out after one drink and went elsewhere. I mentioned this to the bartender, and he was kind to offer a buy-back of a rare whiskey, which I did accept. 5 stars for the bartender, but 1 for my experience. I don't like to be harsh or unnecessarily cruel, but this is what it is. I have visited in the past and enjoyed myself. Nonetheless, I certainly won't be coming back.

I've made it a point to visit every vinyl listening bar that I learn of in town, after enjoying the shared experience of someone curating a select vinyl list in intimate spaces in Tokyo. Few have been able to replicate the experience, but Honeycomb Hi Fi Lounge comes close. That the space is narrow with just a few seats along the bar and a few tables mimics the Japanese experience best, where you can almost have it so the whole room is having one conversation together. The music is the focus. The cocktail menu is rather simple, and my Stormbringer drink, with dark rum and ginger beer was not anything to write home about, but $15 is pretty low for cocktails these days so I'll take it. If they introduced new cocktails to the menu with more interesting ingredients I'd be more inclined to return, but the vibes overall are pretty good and the staff really nice.

Unfortunately this place fell very flat. Leading with what we liked: Their mocktail offerings were good, promising a 0.0% ABV which is hard to come across when mocktails are offered. They serve oysters, which adds to that aphrodisiac experience of the oh so 'wow this is a former brothel!'. The bartenders and servers were fast and very sociable with the more sociable customers. The immediate entrance is very tight, and it was uncomfortable navigating the space. We expected there'd be more seating in the back, which there was, but it was limited and not offered to us until we asked for it. We honestly had no clue where it would be and only asked because of how this place was advertised. While it was comfy once we made our way back there, it was reminiscent of a lounge style bar space that almost any bar could replicate with the right room and budget. We didn't feel as though this hit the spot and were let down by this experience. I'm not sure if I can judge the menu of drinks/ foods as expensive, but we left hungry bc we couldn't justify some of the prices. In addition, I've seen a lot of complaints about the volume of the music: it's definitely loud at the front but a lot lower in that back lounge space. It's as loud as any bar's music level would be, but truth be told we were expecting music that matched the vibe of what was advertised and yes, at a lower volume.
