Best then, best now, best ever! In all honesty, you haven't eaten a taco until you've eaten at Tacos El Gordo in Tijuana. It's been about 3 years since the last time I've been to Mexico and this is always the first and usually only stop for tacos. Often imitated by other places and time of street vendors, but never duplicated. You can't go wrong with the guacamole topped carne asada taco but the adoba pork is what they're known for. Cut right off the the spit and into the tortilla. It is the ultimate late night food, easily eclipsing any bacon wrapped hot dog. Sober or drunk, it's the best taco I've ever had, no question about it. I've been to the Tacos El Gordo in San Diego and I've been to the one in Vegas but there's something about having it in TJ with an ice cold Coke in a glass bottle. Came down to TJ for the day with parents. Got to the this spot since have tried the locations in Las Vegas and Chula Vista. This was the worse experience out of all of them. The food was actually good, wish I could say the same about the service. Ordered tacos and when it came to drinks they only had one kind. The problem was that even tho the restaurant was dead empty they were in a big rush to get us out of there. This was around 2pm today May 21st 2025. It's not like we made this up, my mom and I head the cook tell the waiter that we had finished eating but still had not left. I am never coming back here since TJ is crowded with taco stands that would love me as a customer. I advise you to save yourself the bad experience and rather get it to go or eat somewhere else. We took a trip across the border to go camping back in May (2018). We stopped by two other taco shops, but they were not open until later. Apparently some taco places only open up in the evening and we were too early. That is why we ended up at Tacos El Gordo. We love their taco shops in San Diego. We figured that it would be the same... but sadly, it wasn't. Service was very good. Our group of 10 was actually seated at two tables and brought menus. Definitely different from the US where we stand in line to order and have to practically fight for a table. The young guy (teenager) that took our order was polite and attentive. He took our order, read it back to make sure it was accurate, and brought everything out as soon it became ready. We made sure we left him a nice tip. We ordered carne asada tacos and of xourse the adobada. Most everyone in the group loves their adobada. The tacos were all good up until we noticed that a lot of the adobada meat was really fatty. This resulted in chewiness and a texture that all of us were not accustomed to. Each taco had a fair portion (30-40%) of the fatty meat. Maybe it is something that they like to eat down here in TJ, but just not what we are use to in the States. Tortillas of course tasted fresh and tacos were good, except the fatty meat. Parking was easy enough, but it's not uncommon for people to double park and block your vehicle, simply because space is limited. A minor inconvenience when we were leaving, but no biggie. I ordered some tacos from this taco stand in TJ and got freaking sick as hell! Still have the runs after 4 days from eating here! Don't recommend! I should've known not to eat the pork buche tacos, meat looked like it was 3 days old, the floor was sticky and the table had a layer of black dust that I cleaned with a few napkins. I used to absolutely go crazy for these tacos but once I discovered tacos el franc here in Tijuana these definitely took a back seat. They are definitely good tacos and one of a kind I must say but tacos el franc definitely takes the crown . I need to write this review before it gets too late, because it's been a few weeks now. I was quick to review another local restaurant because it was that memorable, but I also got around a lot the last couple weeks. What Tacos El Gordo reminds me of, is that local hole in the wall that you can reliably go to, and eat good, cheap food. I expected to come, get some tacos, and leave happy. I didn't expect to discover mulas, and love them. And get full off of only one! But there was lots to love about El Gordo. We saw at least 2 performances, my cousin got his shoes shined, all the while eating some very good mulas. A local person won't care to read this review, because chances are, they know what's up. So if you are a visitor, and not sure what to expect. It's outdoor seating with a tent like covering, and the restroom is in the nearby building. At 2:00am, with a good buzz on and nothing else is open- maybe. Any other time - no way. Tacos aren't themselves bad, but fucking smothered in low quality guacamole and cilantro. First taco a waste until I could order without. No beer, so that sucks. Also a Mexican DUI checkpoint right out front on a Saturday late night, so if you are thinking about driving over - don't! The place would rate higher just for late night tacos, but it's very very dirty, even by TJ standards. Scuzzy throughout and flies everywhere. I decided to take a trip across the border since I have craving authentic Mexican tacos. I came here at the recommendation of my cab driver telling me that the tacos are better here than the ones from Chula Vista. I should have known better... They are not. While they are super cheap ($24 pesos per taco), the carne asada meat was incredibly fatty and chewy and their al pastor meat was a little bit on the bland side. Their horchata also tasted like the average horchata you'd expect from a typical taco shop. The tables are also all outside so there are flies everywhere. It is definitely not worth it to take a trip across the border when you can get them for slightly better quality in the states. After driving a long way from Ensenada, before we hit the border, the family wanted to stop at TACOS el FRANC unfortunately we arrived too early. They open at 3pm. We settled for tacos el gordo right across the way. BIG mistake! The tacos I ate were very unpleasing to my taste buds and stomach. To make matters worse, the service was lousy. The waitress seemed to be overwhelmed with how many of us there were. She asked if we all were paying separate orders then paused and walked away and didn't come back until about 10 minutes later. Gordo may be king in San Diego, though good, there are much better tacos in Tijuana. Rather than publicising Gordo's competition, I'll point out a few things that they're doing well, which surely plays into these guys being in business for a very long time and for their success both in Mexico and the United States. Gordo isn't grimey and I appreciate it. There are plenty of places, carts, and trucks in Tijuana that would have the health department padlocking the front door (or booting the wheels) if they were doing biz in the USA, but Mexico does more than turn a blind eye when it comes to cleanliness. Seeing that health codes aren't strongly enforced I love that Gordo enforces good hygienic practices on their own accord. The service is great and it always has been. Even though there is still a pretty big language barrier they do their best to make sure all orders come out speedy and complete - these guys aim to please. Oh, about that language barrier... I don't mind one bit. I'm in Mexico, it's not their responsibility to speak to me in English but rather my responsibility to attempt to communicate in Spanish. I'm more than happy to try! After all of this, the tacos are good. They aren't great but they certainly scratch an itch. The al pastor is probably their strongest taco (in my humble opinion) but even their worst is probably better than the best taco in most cities in the USA. read more

I used to love coming to TJ for the original tacos el Gordo, but this is definitely not what it used to be!!! I heard that they have new owners and the recipe for the al pastor/adobada tacos are not the same and I could definitely tell! I was so disappointed when I came here today and tasted these tacos and how the quality and flavor was not there anymore. I decided to give this place a try because a friend said they're some of the best tacos in TJ and honestly, he did not lie. They are some of the best tacos I've ever had in my entire life. I decided to try the chorizo and asada ones. However, I am only giving them 2 stars because their customer service is terrible. The lady who took our order was very monotonous and she seemed like she didn't want us there. I am not sure if this is how they treat all their clientele or just the ones who come from the US, but it was a disappointing and awkward experience for both my dad and I. This is a place to get tacos al pastor, near the Costco in Tijuana in the Rio Zona area and easy to get back across the border. I took a group there from the East Coast...all they said was "mmmmm" as we went through orders of tacos. Authentic, plentiful, delicious and cheap! Cool place. Good food. Bad parking. The owners son is very cool, told me a lot about the business. If I'm remembering correct I think the special cost the same as ordering items separately. Parking is a hassle tho. Tacos de pastor and Asada are gooood. I like tripa but on one occasion out of the many times I've been there it tasted off like kinda herby and old. We had freshly crossed the border and were in need of some bomb tacos. We came here because it was pretty busy which is usually a good sign. The cool thing about this place is that since it's so close to the border you can order in Spanish, makeshift Spanish, and even some English. If you order in English just don't start asking a bunch of questions. Like, definitely don't come in asking if the meat is sustainable or something like that. It's meat and it's inside a tortilla. The service was good and they accept the dollar and the peso. In fact, they'll put both totals on your receipt to help you out if you're paying using the dollar. I ordered a couple of carne asada tacos and they were soooooo good. The green sauce on them was muy delicioso. It kinda looks like guacamole but it isn't. They had other things on the menu but I just needed a few tacos before heading to the beer festival across from the mercado. Anyway. This location was not good. I'm not a big fan of lengua but the lenguas at the Vegas location is AMAZING & like melts in your mouth. The lengua at this location is not that good.
