Tacos OJ - I haven't had this treat since my childhood!!! - Mexican Near Me - Fort Stockton, Texas

I'm a Texan with a penchant for Tex-Mex (and Mex, New Mex and even Lou-Mex), and I enjoyed this little joint. Was it the best ever? Hardly. But, in all fairness, I've eaten at no fewer than 200 different Tex-Mex restaurants in my lifetime. First, as one reviewer stated, this is very much a New Mexican-style restaurant, although they try to get there with the Tex-Mex. What does this mean? Quite simply, this place uses red sauce (vs. chili gravy) for enchiladas. It also offers stacked enchiladas with an egg placed on top, which is true New Mexican. Beyond that, the menu is quite varied. I'll start with my cheese enchiladas with red sauce. The sauce was spicy as hell, which was wonderful. The enchiladas themselves were a disappointment because they used two corn tortillas to roll them with the smallest pinch of cheese I've experienced in a while. -- I'm not sure about my dad's chile relleno and beef enchilada with green sauce, but he really enjoyed both. The rice and beans were pretty much par for the course. Not bad but nothing special. The salsa here is phenomenal. There's just enough onion and cilantro to make it memorable. It's served cold, which is a must for me, and it has some serious bite. Service here is really friendly and efficient. The atmosphere is old school: cheap paneling and trite "Mexican" decor. The men's bathroom is almost as dark as a movie theater. I don't get to this area often, but I would certainly eat here again any time I do. read more

One of the better places we stopped on our way through Texas! The service was nice and friendly, they all carry Mexican Coke (in bottles). Nice serving of chips, don't miss the queso. From the moment we sat down, we knew we picked the right place for traditional New Mexican. Lots of locals here. Between the two of us, we had a red and a green chile cheese enchilada, chile relleño, beef taco, and guacamole. All were served at the right temperature with a tasteful bite of spices. The complimentary green salsa and warm chips were perfect. Not greasy - light and crisp. There was a small dish of fideo soup served with the salsa that was a perfect starter. The service was spot on and attentive without being too much. Atmosphere was typical Mexican decor with tiled tabletops. You need to eat here! Mexican CFS is very good, green enchiladas were not hot and the tortillas seemed raw flavor was ok. Chips were sub par. Not our first time here and it was better last time so we may try again. We walked in, we're told to sit wherever, asked what we wanted to drink, tea, they brought it after about 10 minutes and ordered. We were there almost an hour, many people walked in, sat down and had their orders taken in a few minutes and their food brought out in a timely manner. About 40 minutes in a couple of waitresses put two tables together, put menus and silverware on it and went about their business. After an hour we went to the front and asked to pay for our tea so we could leave since they obviously didn't want our business after taking our order over an hour and hadn't even checked on us since. They said no charge but wanted to ask the cook about our order, which was never brought. They brought out an older woman who couldn't speak English, was obviously angry about us questioning about our order and leaving, who after translated rudely claimed they had this big party she had to start fixing for. I asked, "The party for the empty tables with menus and silverware and no one has walked in the past 20 minutes and sat down at"? I asked about the people who came in after us, some even since the tables were put together, orders taken and brought out to them... they had no answer for that. I told them I'd make sure all our friends in Stockton who kept recommending them to us knew how we were treated. I would not recommend this to anyone, these individuals had no customer service or care for their customers, unless they knew them by name when they walked in. In the past 21 years of living in Terrell County and eating in Stockton at least twice a month, we've NEVER been treated this way by any other cafe or eatery in Ft Stockton or in Del Rio. read more

Oh god NO! Greasy chips started us out. Then we ordered gordita plate,the waitress said we could only have Two different gordita out of the 3.. WTF? After waiting the waitress came back and said we could NOT have the one different gordita,it had to be the same. Ok fine We waited and waited and waited. The two women that were seated at the same time as us checked out.. Our waitress told us one more minute. We waited Gorditas are really no different than tacos. Come on it's not hard dish.. We waited. Then we left. Don't bother with me his place.. Oh! By the way the chili con queso is powdered or tasted like it . Even addinging tons of green salsa didn't oof it up. Ugh. Came here for a late lunch/early dinner on the drive back from Big Bend to Austin. Our expectations for food were pretty low on this stretch of the drive, but we were pleasantly surprised with the experience we had here! Most of the restaraunts here and in other nearby towns had similar feels, so we chose here on the basis of their incredibly long menu. I had the Enchiladas Montadas, the combination of runny eggs on top of enchiladas sounded intriguing and different than I would usually find at restaraunts in Austin. Our first takeaway was that you get phenomenal bang for your buck, even taking into account that you're nowhere near a major city. Part of my reasoning for choosing the enchiladas was they fell on the cheaper end of the menu, since I didn't want to overstuff myself before another long drive, but I was certainly mistaken. If you go for any of the larger plates I'd expect to bring some home, even if you come super hungry. The quality of the food was strong across the board. Nothing where you would go out of your way to come here, but I'd feel pretty confident you'll come away satisfied with whatever you order. Overall I think this is an excellent spot if you find yourself hungry on a long drive across I-10. read more

Never been so disappointed. We ordered queso that was water white cheese and had to ask twice for it. Then after ordering our meals( waitress/ manager)not knowing any detail on food it took an hour of politely asking and waiting. Finally I asked one more time and waited another 5 minutes and we walk up to the register and they tried to make us pay for food we didn't get. I never walk out of places. But this one take the award Beware don't eat here! Unless you like the abuse of a grumpy manager and never getting your food. read more

We stopped here on our way through town because the other Mexican place was temporarily closed. We ordered queso, fajitas, and chicken enchiladas. The queso was...not great. It seemed like it came out of a Tostitos jar. The chicken enchiladas were also not great because there was hardly any chicken in them at all. The fajitas were some of the best we've ever had though. We stopped in Fort Stockton for lunch on a trip back from Big Bend. This place was slightly better than the many typical small town roadside Tex-Mex restaurants I have been to. I had the tacos OJ (beef) and really enjoyed them. The portion was large but not as large as I expected for a place like this because I was able to finish it all quite easily. The front of the menu said prices were higher than listed due to inflation, but it turned out to be much higher than I anticipated. I'm pretty sure it said something around $12-13 on the menu then I was charged over $18. I highly doubt that price increase is very scientific. We didn't need to wait long for our large group on Saturday at noon. The servers were not very nice and made me feel bad. There was only one bathroom for each gender, so the line was long. read more

It's hard not to be impressed by this hidden gem in an unassuming truck stop town. Don't be fooled by the dirt parking lot. The soul of Juarez lives deep in the flavors of each dish here. Personally I stop here for the Birria tacos each time I drive through. Ask for extra salsa, then dunk each bite in either the perfectly balanced au jus or in house made salsa and you will understand. The friendly and helpful staff is always nearby to accommodate as needed. I feel justified in the act of over tipping at this establishment as the food quality quietly commands attention without begging for it. I hope the chef there reads this one day and decides to open up a spot in cave creek AZ, as we are in desperate need of really good Mexican food. I rarely walk out of places. We have been driving for over ten hours and stop here for food. We waited for 20 minutes and we didn't even get water. They brought us salsa and chips, no drinks and then we waited as those around us got drinks and food. No one took our order or checked in. We walked out. Soo when you're traveling on IH10 and either facing the fact that it's 3 hours to El Paso or 4 hours to San Antonio then you've got to make that decision that Fort Stockton is gonna be your food stopover. Service was amazing and the food... yeah the food was incredible! The refried beans and rice were absolutely amazing! You know the kinds where just about as much lard was added as beans to make them! They were good! The Molcajete Nortena was DA BOMB!! The best deal you can get! All that meat in the authentic sauce done up right on that volcanic stone was on point! My wife had the barbacoa tacos and my son got the beef steak tacos... they also loved them! The worst place about this place.... You've got to be trapped in a car for about 3-4 hours wondering if left overs can be safely kept. Otherwise you'd pack up every drop of this delicious food! STOP AND CHECK THIS PLACE OUT! The first time I came to Tacos OJ last year, it was pretty good. Our family remembered the meal so much, we made a stop to eat dinner here on Saturday night. Guess what - so did everyone else in Fort Stockton that night. By the time we arrived, the kitchen was backed up by 35 minutes and the only dishes available were tacos and enchiladas. I was lucky to get a chili relleno! Steaks and other beef items were sold out. Even the salsa for the chip was gone! Even tea and Dr. Pepper were the only real drink options. The entire staff was visibly exhausted, yet said if we were willing to wait, they would get us food. We waited patiently and appreciated how hard the team hustled. Many other customers were not as nice with them. One mentioned that they were looking forward to their day off on Sunday. While the food could have been a little better that night, I appreciated having a warm meal and look forward to eating more delicious, specialty items like the Ranchero Steak we've have on the menu on another day. read more

It was a typical small town restaurant. A bit dirty. Service was meh. Didn't have 4 of the types of beer that a Mexican restaurant should have because they were out of stock. No chimichangas. No lemons. The "queso" was straight out of the can. I can overlook poor service and a dirty spot for good food but it just wasn't there. read more

This was the only place we ate at while passing through Fort Stockton on our way to Marfa so I had no frame of reference when comparing this place to others in town. But I have had Tacos before lol (a lot of them) and these were superb. So close to the border, they were legit authentic. Nothing high brow happening here. Just legit tacos that were perfect. Not to mention the rice and beans were a star on their own. Don't let the unsuspecting store front fool you. The parking lot was full and so was the restaurant. Gringos and Mexicans alike. Not sure how this place has 4 stars. Took 1hr 15 mins From walking in to walking out. We got seated promptly. Didn't get menus or anything for about 15 mins. Should have been our sign to walk out. Our waitress kept forgetting about us. We had to ask about 3 times for everything because she would keep forgetting. My brothers rice had a piece of rock in it. My sons taco didn't have cheese as requested. Waited another 10 mins for it. I had to get up a couple times to get napkins and request utensils. The food wasn't even good.
