Super clean, clearly newly renovated bathroom!

Pepinos was pretty decent! We were on our way out of big bend national park heading back to Austin and passed through Fort Stockton so we came here for lunch. It was a Sunday and the place was pretty packed, but we were served fairly quickly, and our server was very nice. The food was decently good and the chips and salsa served beforehand were great quality! The bathrooms had clearly just been renovated and were really nice and clean. The prices were pretty standard. Overall this was a nice spot to grab a bite before getting back on the road. I wish my plate had had a little more veggies and substance to it (I'd had a burrito, all it had was meat in it) but my parents had plates that came with some veg so they shared some of theirs with me. I did leave full, no issue there. I've not tried any other spots in Ft. Stockton so don't have a comparison but for a quick meal of Mexican food / Tex mex this spot is pretty good and quick!

This sticker on their drink cooler showing support for zionist state of Israel.

The food could be cooked by competent chefs, don't bother ordering a medium rare anything. Its all well done. Also don't expect to come in and order aguas, they usually don't have anything. The atmosphere isnt welcoming either, the Israeli sticker makes you wonder who the owners are. Are they Mexican are they American, do they understand what the zionist state has done to our country. I cant stand to look at this place or support them.

Absolutely delicious tacos and the service is very friendly. I had the brisket, chicken, and beef tacos and they were all outstanding. This is now my go-to place for great tacos when I'm in Fort Stockton. I highly recommend.

Combination Plate: taco, enchilada, chili relleno, rice, and beans.

Staying overnight in Fort Stockton and found Pepito's Cafe for dinner. Hubby and I ordered the combination plates ... I chose red cheese enchiladas and he had green beef enchilada. We both got beef tacos and chili relleno with rice and beans. Green sauce tasted amazing. The red sauce was good with just a little spice. The refried beans were pretty yummy! Not bland as sometimes happens... full of flavor. The tortillas for the tacos were soft fried in house. Chips were brought out with salsa. The salsa could have used a little more heat for me, but good. The waitresses were attentive and checked back on us. Typical Tex-Mex menu with a few other dishes we might try next time. Just and FYI... you seat yourself wherever you want and they have a drive thru to pick up call in orders.

Fast service and you get chips and salsa while you wait. The chips were fresh and warm and the salsa was outstanding! I ordered the smothered (ground beef) burrito which was yummy and came with refried beans and rice.

There's a covered patio with a few tables in the front and a couple large tables that could each easily fit eight people, and a small 2-top. They brought us out complimentary chips and salsa. What a nice surprise. The chips were warm and the salsa was delicious-- bright, flavorful, and with just the right amount of kick (mild heat but not too spicy; your three-year-old might not be a fan but my husband who doesn't normally like too spicy enjoyed it). I ordered my staple whenever I visit a diner/cafe for the first time-- the Patty Melt with mustard and mayo on the side (this condiment combination on the side is winning with a patty melt, btw ). They offer all the veggies with it but I just ordered mine with sautéed onion. The food took a little bit but we weren't in a hurry and when it came out it was nice and hot. My Patty Melt was served on a buttery grilled Texas Toast with a side of fries and it was oh so good. Loved the variation of Texas Toast in place of Rye bread. It was seasoned well and both classic and unique. Made with love! The fries had a good balance of crispy and soft inside. My husband and son ordered the Bacon Cheeseburger and were really happy with it. My husband said that it tasted like a "Texas Burger." Doesn't that say it all, though. The women working inside were kind and welcoming. They chatted with us and were helpful whenever we asked questions about the menu. They gave us a sweet Texas goodbye on our way out and told us to drive carefully like sweet Texas mamas do. My only critique would be that the bathroom needed some attention but, besides that, our experience was good and we wouldn't hesitate to stop in again knowing the folks are kind and will feed ya' well.

But, in all fairness, I've eaten at no fewer than 200 different Tex-Mex restaurants in my lifetime. First, as one reviewer stated, this is very much a New Mexican-style restaurant, although they try to get there with the Tex-Mex. What does this mean? Quite simply, this place uses red sauce (vs. chili gravy) for enchiladas. It also offers stacked enchiladas with an egg placed on top, which is true New Mexican. Beyond that, the menu is quite varied. I'll start with my cheese enchiladas with red sauce. The sauce was spicy as hell, which was wonderful. The enchiladas themselves were a disappointment because they used two corn tortillas to roll them with the smallest pinch of cheese I've experienced in a while. -- I'm not sure about my dad's chile relleno and beef enchilada with green sauce, but he really enjoyed both. The rice and beans were pretty much par for the course. Not bad but nothing special. The salsa here is phenomenal. There's just enough onion and cilantro to make it memorable. It's served cold, which is a must for me, and it has some serious bite. Service here is really friendly and efficient. The atmosphere is old school: cheap paneling and trite "Mexican" decor. The men's bathroom is almost as dark as a movie theater. I don't get to this area often, but I would certainly eat here again any time I do.
