I decided to give this place a try. I was told they have good chicken fried steaks. The service was quick and we went in about 5:15pm the place wasn't that busy. They did have specials but unfortunately they didn't honor them. We asked for two chicken fried steaks which were early bird specials Monday thru Friday. We also had the queso and chips with came with a side of salsa. The queso was nice and cheesy and the salsa had some nice heat to it. The chicken fried steaks were small and to thin, it was served upside down on a bed of white gravy. The plate came with a side salad and we ordered the mashed potatoes. The salad was fairly small in my opinion. The plate which should have been $10.99 ended up being $15. In this case the food was not worth the money. Portions are small. I did however liked the queso, salsa, chips and chicharrones are a nice touch. The sweet tea is really good. read more

I have been here many times. I have read the other reviews. I don't get it. This is an "old school wonderful" restaurant in Fort Stockton. The food is consistently great, period. It does not matter what I have, it is always tasty and prepared well. Today I had the shrimp and the other in my party had the chicken fried steak. Both dishes were prepared well and they tasted good. Are you looking for your plate to look like it was prepared by a French chef? This is not the place. Are you looking for good food at a fair price? This IS the place. The inside is old, yes...just like the rest of the buildings in the town. Lovely murals with Fort Stockton history are painted all over the inside--and they are freshly updated. Make sure your kids pick out all the road runners hidden in them. It's a Fort Stockton thing! Don't believe the naysayers...this is good food. This is good value. Service is usually good--but these days you get what you get. Be happy you have a server and that they are polite to you! I'm not certain what the neg-rep folks on here were expecting. This is NOT an upscale, celebrity chef, Gordon Ramsey restaurant. It is a cafe, run by locals, serving locals, who want a good value. Their daily specials are just that, a very good value. I've had their catfish on Fridays, and their breakfasts, and I've never felt like I was getting screwed. Is the building old? Hell, yes, just like most of Fort Stockton. (The town is 150 years old, BTW.) If you can't handle a local diner with reasonably priced food, then please stay in NYC. (We don't even have a Starbucks in Fort Stockton, so I don't know why you would expect The Ritz as a dining option out here.) read more

Was looking for somewhere to eat after my trip from California on my way to Houston, and this place popped on my phone. It looks like a family own nor sure, but the personal there seem to know almost everyone walking in, which gives it a homelike vibe. The macaroni tomato soup was delicious. I got two plates. The place itself is a little outdated from the outside, but don't let that fool you. That's usually how it is up there. Prices are fare. The most expensive thing is the stake, but nothing outrageous. I was driving through town and was really wanting a steak. I saw steak written on the outside of the building and decided to stop. This place may not be the most beautiful on the street but it is very clean and the food is to die for. My steak (8 oz ribeye) was cooked and flavored to perfection. Steak sauce would have ruined it. My baked potato was baked, fluffy and the perfect temperature. They had real butter and real cheddar cheese. My salad was cold and crisp. Just when I thought I was done I was offered dessert. I don't know what these things are called on the menu but they should be called sweet, yummy buns from heaven. Huge with pecans. These things are special and made with love. They can put Cinnabon out of business. The staff were kind and helpful. The whole experience was a delight for me. read more

We were traveling across Texas and stopped in Fort Stockton overnight. When we looked for a place to go for breakfast this restaurant was recommended to us by the lady at the hotel. It was a tremendously good recommendation! When I asked the waitress to make a special dish for me with tomatoes and chorizo and eggs and beans she said no problem and the food came out quickly and tasted wonderful! We came to this place to celebrate anniversary, and never again anything we ordered they were out of stock. The prices change, not worth it.

First, in a desert town, they really should sell beer. They don't. They did let me bring my own in. The place seems to be operated by teenagers and the young chef may need more experience. Presentation and inspiration are a little on the short side. We tried a variety of dishes. My nephew, fittingly, ordered the biggest steak they had and he was happy with it. I'm not sure if it was the best steak he'd ever had, but he ate it all. My baked fish was ungarnished, but healthy and fairly tasty. My brother said that his enchiladas were salty. He did not care for them. The salad bar is small and not fancy, no arugula, kale or artichoke hearts like in the big city. But, it was pretty good and healthy. OK for a roadside stop if you're passing through, but not worth seeking out. Restaurant has no windows, giving the dining area a dark, gloomy and dated feel. Despite the restaurant name, most of the items on the menu are Tex-Mex. I ordered the cheese enchiladas with verde sauce. The food was pale in color and served on a beige cafeteria-style plate. A simple garnish such as diced tomatoes might have made the plate a bit more lively. The enchiladas actually weren't bad - although either the verde sauce or appearance gave them a "bland" vibe. My companion ordered the tacos, which were dreadful. The shells tasted like they had gone stale and had been re-fried to try to revive them... unsuccessful. Maybe we should have ordered the steaks. At least the prices were reasonable, and the food came with friendly, efficient West Texas service. read more

When I'm on the road, I don't like going to a chain since I think a local establishment should be tried first. Wish I went to a chain. This place was old and not clean. I love a good dive and know a good one when I eat there. This wasn't one. Your child could cook a better meal. Try another place; don't be fool by some of the not so bad reviews. Fort Stockton, as a town, has had its share of ups and downs, a fact reflected in that it doesn't offer the greatest variety of eateries. Since '82 we've stopped and stayed in town twice a year while on the way to Big Bend National Park, as it's the last outpost for folks like us heading southward. Honestly can't say 'why' we've never visited Steak House in the past, perhaps it was our usual motel's walk-in restaurant? After another 12-hour day behind the wheel, taking a few steps toward a Pseudo-Swiss-German eatery and NOT having to slide behind the wheel again was simply not to be missed. However, Pseudo-Swiss-German is a thing of the past. The menu is typical West-Texas fare, nothing super-special. However, from our viewpoint the two items tried were both 'above average'. I had the meatloaf platter, while my friend had the great Texas staple, Chicken-fried steak. He ordered the c/f/s without gravy, and found it very tasty. I liked the meatloaf, enjoyed with green beans and mashed potatoes. Our pecan pie dessert was above average. The first dinning room was about 1/2 full on an 'early' Friday night, and our server was both friendly and helpful in answering our questions about menu items. The 'chuckwagon' salad bar was well-stocked with fresh looking and tasting items. For the portions received, we thought the price was 'in line'. The floors weren't sticky, the dishes and tables clean. One could do FAR worse in Fort Stockton! read more

We stopped in Fort Stockton for lunch on our way to New Mexico. Filled up with some gas and asked the dame behind the counter for a recommendation. She immediately said the Steak House Restaurant. Cars were surrounding the place so this was a good sign. My family of 5 walked in and I felt like we had time warped into a scene from "Footloose" (original, not remake). The local looked at us like we big bad city folk invading their town. We waited for a table to be cleared then looked over the menu. Hubby ordered the chicken fried steak which was the special. It looked horrible and tasted bland. My older kids got the burgers and were happy with them. I ordered a bacon grilled cheese. I ordered this same item at a restaurant at home and well, this one sucked. The sandwich was soaked in butter, kind of sloppy smushed. Fries were okay but tasted kind of refried.. Staff doesn't seem to handle the inside real well. Defiinitiely disappointed. Locals usually give good recommendations but this time we should have taken into consideration that the recommender looked more like the crypt keeper. read more

I wondered if that was not a good sign since it is easy to spot good grub in a one horse town by all the pickup trucks outside. The walls were covered in a big mural of a typical West Texas scene of outlaws and cowboys. It complimented the Musica Tejana. Ordered Almitas Special which was an 8oz ribeye served ranch style with an enchillada, rice, and beans. I thought it wasn't bad - worthy of a 3/5. Girlfriend picked out the grilled chicken with a baked potato. She also grabbed a plate of greens from the salad bar, which was a bit lacking. When her meal came, I selfishly laughed inside because it was soon clear I ordered the better of the two meals. I did feel bad for her. She said her meal was a 2/5, maybe a 1/5 if you take into account the price. All things considered, it probably is on par with other restaurants in Fort Stockton. Nearly $10 for a cheese enchilada plate in Fort Stockton? Ridiculous. The enchiladas were "OK" but the only places in Texas I know of that charge that much for this simple and low cost dish are in Austin and Dallas where restaurant costs are likely 5X what these people pay for rent, utilities, labor, etc. If this plate cost a much more fair price of $5.99 to $6.99 it would have gotten a "three star" rating. And there are a lot of small Texas towns where the cafes serve equal or better enchilada plates in this price range. read more

My husband and I rv across the country and this by far is the very worst place we have eaten. $8 for a Blt on stale bread with old lettuce and a trace of tomato was rediculous I did ask for crispy bacon but this was very crunchy . $2.50 for ice tea with no refills offered. More mexican than steakhouse. Inside is dated and bland with a very Pancho Villa paint job on the walls. The staff were hispanic and seemed more comfortable with spanish than english. Our waitress was very nice and attentive. The salad bar is kind of a joke. Its stocked with bag lettuce and the kind of pasta salad you can buy from walmart. When we where they they were out of mashed potatoes and coca cola. I'm not sure if its a normal practice but if you order a soda they just pop open a can and pour it into a cup with some ice. My husband ordered a T-bone and he said it tasted fine but it was so tough he could barely cut it. My son ordered a cheeseburger. They didn't put the cheese on it. It was a homemade patty but it was so greasy it was dripping. I ordered the catfish. It looked to be one of those frozen, fry and serve kind of things. It was very mushy. They did however have decent baked potatoes. Overall I would probably give this place another chance but I highly doubt it will get any better. read more
