This was my 45th stop on the KCK Tacotrail. I'm nearing the end of the trail, but Tacos on Wheels is possibly rolling into my top 5 experiences on this year long expedition. I have driven past them several times in attempts to eat here prior, but with overflowing parking lots, one way streets and crowds outside, I have kept going and checked off another place on the list. Big mistake. This place is worth driving around the block for or illegally parking in the elementary school lot next door. The six tables were occupied so I did carry out and had a private taco tailgate party while the chihuahuas across the street threatened to jump their fence and destroy me and my tacos. Compared to most other area taquerias, my 3 tacos were a bit pricey at $2.99 each but worth every penny. I ordered a pastor, asada and a suadero ( marinated beef). Each taco was heaping with crispy edged and succulent hot meat straight off the grill topped with cilantro, onions and a schmear of creamy guacamole. the flavoring, temperature and texture combinations were perfect on all 3 but the suadero becoming a new personal favorite. A most definite repeat after this long crazy trail has ended. read more

Hands down the best al pastor quesadilla I've ever had. They do not skimp on portion size here so make sure that you go hungry! Also, their tortas are to die for. It's a little mom and pop hole in the wall place and off the beaten path, but 100% worth the visit! read more

A bullet hole adorns the window next to where I'm seated. A bank of security cameras show their results on a large screen directly behind and above the cashier with evidence intended for someone whose needs probably don't include Mexican food. They show 9 different angles including all the surrounding parking and the interior of the restaurant. The menu and signage is clearly intended for Hispanic customers with a bit of English here and there, and I love the "Taco's On Wheels" signage. There are no wheels, and the misplaced apostrophe indicates the business was started by, or the signage designed by someone with little English knowledge. Or both. A bonus for a Yelper with a warped sense of amusement. The cashier speaks passable English but we struggle a bit to understand each other. She's speaking English, me a barely passable Spanish. She smiles. Service: 5 stars. And the tacos were damn fine. I requested tripas but they had none, not an uncommon occurrence around town, and I get it. I settle for carne and pastor, two each. Out they come, individually wrapped in paper, adorned with sauce and the onions and cilantro I'd requested. They come with a small basket of radishes, limes and a large grilled jalapeno. Nice. A guava Jarritos washed it down. The tacos are double wrapped, the tortillas heated and appeared slightly oiled, the meats savory, seasoned well, moist and delicious. A guy across me was having the nachos and wiped the sweat from his brow (as was I) when downing the massive jalapeno that comes with each meal. Here's what really endears me about this place: open until 12:00 a.m. every night except for Friday, Saturday and Sunday when they're open until 3:00 a.m. Unlikely I've ever stop in after midnight, but this is a sign someone is working very hard for a living and that there's business that late. Latin America culture has much later hours than this country, more evidence this place is the real deal. In what is clearly a very poor and economically depressed neighborhood with few businesses, the have my respect. If you come: Park in their lot if you can, to the North Credit and debit cards accepted but only with a minimum $5 purchase A bit of Spanish won't hurt, but you shouldn't have a problem This is not Taco Bell, you get that, right? read more

I really can't believe this place isn't more popular. It is a tiny bit on the expensive side, but still very reasonable. Their tortas are my favorite in the city, and each order comes with grilled jalapeños, radishes, and limes. I've been there 7 or 8 times and have yet to encounter any rude employees. I usually go there for lunch and there is almost a polite young Hispanic woman working the register and tables. I haven't tried anything on the menu besides the steak quesadilla and the tortas, because I just can't stop eating them. Each sandwich is a symphonic balance of flavors. The pastor has almost a caramelized crust of spices on the outside of each piece, and coupled with the creaminess of queso fresco, avocado and mayo and the crunch of pickled jalapeño, onions, and lettuce-- amazing. The meat is always delicious, no matter what you pick. It can be a bit gristly at times, but this is a blue collar lunch joint. There is a lot going on in their tortas, but no single ingredient ever takes over. The tortas are a bit smaller than most of the others I've had in KC, but I just can't emphasize enough how delicious they are. Absolute perfection. My co-workers ask me to go get lunch here about once a week, and each time, the experience is great. read more

I honestly don't understand the hype on this Taco spot. Place itself is on a corner right on central avenue, not too many parking spots either. I have tried there tacos Only and they were pretty plain. No seasoning on the meat and tortillas were dried up. Nothing special about this place it's a pass for me. read more

I decided to try this place with my brothers after a night out and they did not disappoint! I got 2 chicken tacos and 1 steak taco without guacamole with a horchata! If you haven't had a horchata yet, you have to try it! They will change your life! The tacos were delicious and the customer service was great at 2am. The only downfall I would say is they stop accepting card after 10pm and you have to pay with cash. There's an ATM within the establishment with a $3 charge, so just be mindful of that if you visit this place late night. read more

Don't be fooled by the name; these tacos are immobile. They are also delicious. This dumpy-looking hole-in-the-wall serves up some really excellent street food. After an enthusiastic recommendation from a friend, I was surprised to find it deserted shortly after noon on a beautiful Saturday, but shortly after ordering, it became slammed. When I got my food, it was obvious why they were there. I had asada, al pastor, and chicken tacos, and all were very, very good. The tacos are slightly more expensive than at similar restaurants at $2 apiece, but they are loaded with your chosen meat and well worth the price hike. My only complaint is that they skimp on the chopped onions and cilantro, two toppings I really enjoy on my tacos. Overall, I'd say the food is roughly on par with what you would get at Bonito Michoacan, though I liked the asada here better. I'd give it 4.5 stars if I could, but 4 will have to do. It's a bit of a drive for me, but I will absolutely be back for more. read more

I normally come here and have a good experience. This time, I came in, there was an up charge for sour cream and cheese on tacos. I asked when did this start . The cashier advised me that it just started. I then asked about an up charge for burritos, then the cashier got mad and her tone became negative. She began speaking loudly. As I attempted to continue my order, she answered the phone and took another order over the phone. I do understand that I am not Latino, but I just wanted some good food. If you ask to many questions about the prices or food, they will take advantage of you if you don't speak Spanish and will talk crap about you. I would rather go to el pollo Rey, San Antonios or Reynas down on Kansas Ave. where the food is as good or better and the employees are nicer. Sad cuz I work next door so it was convenient. I've been to quite a few taco stops thanks to the Yelp Taco Crawls! These are top five for sure and worth the drive. I had carnitas and chorizo tacos and they were excellent. Great prices and there are a few booths where you can enjoy your meals in house. The horchata was great here. :) read more
